Moreover, a synergistic action between IRA, visible radiation, UVB or UVA, may not be excluded, for instance regarding ROS production, modulation of cell signalling, induction of mutations and/or epigenetic changes, especially for prolonged and repeated exposures of skin and eye tissues. Waiting for new experimental and epidemiological data (including those obtained applying 'omics' technologies) protection of workers exposed to solar radiation should ideally include the shielding of IRA (although effective sunscreens are not yet available in this regard), while health surveillance should not ignore the possibility of synergistic effects. Finally, preventive pathways have to include, among others, education to healthy lifestyles.

Overall, the topic of workers at particular risk exposed to EMF is an open question and has to be managed case by case using a combination of information sources: directive itself, exposure assessment in the workplace, technical standards, findings of workers' health surveillance, information acquired by the general practitioner or specialists having in care the worker, data from the manufacturer of the devices (e.g. technical sheets or instruction manuals), scientific literature etc.

Solar radiation: a neglected health risk in exposed workers

However, skin cancer is highly preventable, mainly through reduced exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR), which can be achieved by a variety of individual and collective protective measures and interventions. The relative risk associated with different patterns of exposure to solar UVR differs for the subtypes of keratinocyte cancers (KC). Specifically, whether the exposure is intermittent or continuous, and occurs in an occupational or leisure/recreational setting. The main aim of the study using this protocol is to contribute to raising public and policy awareness on solar UVR-inflicted occupational skin cancers in Lisbon. This will be achieved by performing direct measurements of the solar UVR dose received by outdoor workers using a digital platform. Results will likely contribute to further understanding the risk estimates for keratinocyte cance...

The consequent benefits include better prevention of cardiovascular risk and an improvement in quality of life. Considering this, an intervention aimed at promoting healthy eating and non-sedentary lifestyles has been implemented within an Italian university: the aim of the present research is to evaluate its effectiveness. The intervention consisted of a targeted asynchronous e-learning two-hour course on healthy eating and non-sedentary lifestyles. The attendants were 2004 university students and employees. We conducted two surveys before and after the training intervention, and, through the responses obtained, we evaluated the effectiveness of the intervention. We applied different statistical methods, including unpaired t-tests and nonparametric tests, principal components ...

The occupational exposure at tasks from the ladder has been studied. We performed measurements on steps of the ladder. We conducted measurements at different step heights: fourth (height 0.9m from ground), eight (height 1.9m from ground), and eleventh (height 2.8m from ground). We compared when the ladder was grounded and when it was not. Based on our limited measurements, the electric field exposure on the task from the ladder (step eleven) exceeded the action values of the directive.

We performed experiments under power lines using a ladder and constructed different shield nets. We conducted five experiments: (1) ladder was not grounded, (2) ladder was grounded; (3) ladder with a 60×60 cm fish net shield (grounded); (4) ladder with 145 × 60 cm fish net shield (grounded); and (5) the ladder with a chicken net shield (grounded). In the measurement place, the electric field was 5.1 kV/m (height 1.7 m). Our experimental shields could decrease the electric field relatively well.
