Such an analysis should bring forth the peculiar aspects of Meinecke's proposal. The paper will then discuss the position of those, like Alexander Abusch, who opposed the concept of "demonic personality". Eventually, it will be shown how the idea of a certain "demonology" of Germany nazi past is present in other historiographical and anthropological works.

In order to do so, a comparative approach, between Karl Jaspers’ patography of Nietzsche and Gottrfried Benn’s, who, like Jaspers, was a trained physician, is presented. This comparative approach will focus on some key concepts: Nietzsche’s exceptionality, his solitude, and, of course, his illness. The paired analysis of Jaspers’ book, Nietzsche. Einfuhrung in das Verstandis seines philosophieren (1ed. 1936, 2ed. 1946, 3ed. 1949), and Benn’s speech, Nietzsche – nach funfzig Jahren (1950) is expected to provide insight not only on the development of pathography as a “genre”, but also on the cultural debate about Nietzsche in post-WWII Germany. To help in studying such a background, the voice of another important German intellectual, Thomas Mann, is taken into account. Mann, who has always been inspired by Nietzsche, held a speech about him, Nietzsches Philosophie im Lichte unserer Erfahrung, in 1947, the same year in which his book, Doktor Faustus, whose protagonist is an artist suffering from syphilis, was published.

A common purpose in our researches underlined the importance of the "mediation" for the discussed argument, whereas the beauty approaches the thought not only in the mode of the perception, but it also takes into account tangential developments about history, ontological symbolic, arts and human expression.
Authors and sections:
Note platoniche a Oskar Becker.

In this new edition Meinecke’s work is enriched by broad sections, in which Sösemann collects the historian’s writings and letters from the period 1930-1950. In addition, numerous accounts of the work’s international reception, from 1946 to the present, are collected there. After analyzing the main themes of the Katastrophe, the article will review the material proposed by Sösemann, highlighting the perspectives it opens on the interpretation of Meinecke’s work.

In order to do so, a critical reading of Die Idee der Staatsräson in der neueren Geschichte (1924) and of Die deutsche Katastrophe (1946) will be proposed, show- ing how the concept, first introduced to describe the naturalistic element of raison d’état, has then been used to describe Hitler’s demoniacal personality.
