The adoption and implementation of the Social Network Analysis to study the dynamics concerning technology-assisted LTC emerges as efficacious mean to strengthen the paradigm of patient-centered care, providing new perspectives for recognizing how the set of interactions and relationships within a "virtual team" (including formal and informal carers from different organizations) can bring to higher levels of knowledge transfer, organizational learning and innovation spreading.

During the early development of a technology, when the interactions among component types are unclear (in a state of flux) and, therefore, difficult to codify and freeze, organizations build connections with research centres and universities to explore alternative technological solutions. Once such interactions are better understood, codified, modularized and shared, then more exploitative networks (e.g. with suppliers and customers) may be better suited to exploit the current technology.

In this way, the implementation of Information Systems (IS) has to be intended as an input (Giustiniano, 2005) of a process of organizational change, and not as an outcome referring to employment conditions (static coherence between information system and organizational requirements: Ravagnani, 2000). It's important to highlight that, in a more general view, the concept of IS has to be intended not only in terms of technologies (e.g. supplying of automated processing tools), but also in terms of devices of horizontal (intra–organizational) connection, through which data are acquired, expanded and transmitted (Martinez, 2004). The importance of IS at a corporate level has to be mainly r...

Target of the present research work has been to verify how the introduction of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can positively impact on a territorial context characterized by a low degree of computerizing and a not easy handling of data and information flows; the aim is to develop a model that, through di implementation of ICT solutions, allow the modification of the dynamics of communication and interaction/integration among the operators involved in the patient care path, in order to the realization of an information framework able to the circulation and the exchange of complete, individual and accurate cl...

The increasing social incidence of the chronic–degenerative pathol-ogies, such as Diabetes Mellitus type 2, has led to enlighten these issues. In such context, the e–government national strategy first points out on the need of strate-gies of integration and interoperability among information systems, to ensure a safe exchange of information (CNIPA, 2008). The activity of "integrated design" of information flows between doctors and patients, by introducing and implement-ing ICT solutions, allows the creation and the development of reticular organiza-tional forms in which many non contiguous actors work at the same time on the diagnosis and care pro...

In particular, the intellectual capital stands as highly relevant in the dynamics of growth and value creation for knowledge-intensive organizational systems . In the Healthcare Organizations (HCOs), specifically, the information delivery is a mostly tacit feature, closely linked to the processes development or, at least, exploited in a high specialization context, where the extreme fragmentation of the expertise and the deployment of "islands-shaped" information systems has been hindering the sharing of information. Part of the information flow may instead be "captured" through the application of appropriate ICT solutions, aimed at tracking the processes and better interpreting their information outputs.

Design/methodology/approach – The approach taken was an investigation based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods for information-gathering and data-analysis in the context of diabetes care. A case study approach was adopted with the aim of enhancing general practitioners' (GPs') performance levels through an evaluation monitoring and by controlling care paths dynamics. Findings – The realization of the target care path for chronic–degenerative pathologies in the Local Health Trust “Naples 4” in Campania Region (Italy) led to the identification of a suitable framework that modifies, through the implementation of ICT tools, the communications dynamics and the interaction/integration for those actors involved in a patient's care path. Originality/value – Healthcare markets are currently experiencing an acceleration of technological developments; the study tries to show how the appropriate adoption of new technologies can lead to improvements for the quality of care, managing at the same time the consequent rising costs in the sector.
