Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Jun 1, 2023

Thus, the literature has highlighted both the benefits derived from the Third University Mission, the difficulties inherent in the process and the existence of various barriers that can hinder its consolidation in the academic environment. Within the framework of these studies, it has been possible to identify three types of barriers to adopting the third mission: process, researcher, and ally or partner. It is worth mentioning that most of the research developed to date has focused on the study of the impact of the barriers on the development of the Third Mission but not on the analysis of the factors that can influence or attenuate the perception of these barriers. This is surprising if one considers that identifying these factors is relevant in designing strategies to promote the University's Third Mission. Therefore, this article aims to identify the factors that influence or attenuate the researcher's perception of different types of barriers to developing Third Mission activities. The study was based on data from a survey applied to a sample of academics categorized in the National System of Science, Technology and Innovation of Colombia and linked to 6 higher education institutions in the Colombian Caribbean region. Binary logistic regression models were established to analyze the data obtained. The results obtained suggest that, in addition to the researcher's previous experience in the external sector, their perception of the existence of processes or support services provided by the university for the promotion of relationships with actors in the socioeconomic environment is important to mitigate the barriers perceived during the development of Third Mission activities, especially when these activities are located in the support for the management and execution of technology transfer activities. In particular, it was found that as the academic's perception of the policies and procedures, support activities, and the university's technology transfer capacity improves, the barriers of both the researcher and those associated with the process are dissipated. This implies that universities should advance in the institutionalization of the third mission and in strengthening the functions of promotion, advice and support, as well as promotion structures and thus be able to mitigate the perceived barriers to the development of the University's Third Mission.

The paper distinguishes between firms facing deterring barriers to innovation (firms deterred from engaging in innovation activities) and firms confronting revealed barriers (firms that experience barriers alongside their engagement in innovation activities). We investigate whether human capital has a particularly strong impact in lowering barriers among the former group of firms, since a strong skill base is likely to compensate for the lack of previous experience in innovation-related activities or the necessary complementary assets associated to innovation. We draw on four waves of the Spanish Innovation Survey and examine the impact of human capital on three types of obstacles to innovation: cost, knowledge and market obstacles. Results reveal that human capital has a significant impact in attenuating deterring barriers to innovation associated to knowledge shortages and market uncertainties.

Research paper thumbnail of Determinants of open innovation in low-tech SMEs: the influence of the top management team and employees’ human capital

Journal of technology management & innovation

This article aims to analyze the influence of top management team (TMT) characteristics and emplo... more This article aims to analyze the influence of top management team (TMT) characteristics and employees' human capital on the adoption of open innovation practices in low-tech SMEs. The empirical study is based on the use of structural equations from the data derived from a questionnaire applied to 95 companies in the agro-industrial sector located in the northeastern region of Colombia. The results indicate that both the TMT's diversity and coordination have a significant and positive influence on the adoption of open innovation practices. On the other hand, regarding human capital, the results indicate that the experience of the employees is a more decisive feature when implementing open innovation strategies than their level of education and training. This paper contributes to the literature by providing part of the missing microfoundations of open innovation and more strongly connecting open innovation, human capital, and TMT configuration.

We find that UIR exercise a positive effect on university scientific productivity when they are based on the development of activities with high scientific content, but only up to certain level. Also, we find that researchers that combine research and UIR activities obtain higher funding from competitive public sources than those that only engage in research. In addition, their average scientific productivity is higher and they achieve higher status within the institution than those members of faculty that concentrate only on research. The analysis considers two effects of UIRs, one on business innovation and the other on the scientific production of academic researchers. The results reveal that UIRs have no significant effects on either firms' technological innovation or academic scientific production. Therefore, these results suggest that, in territories with low absorptive capacity, UIRs, mainly R&D-based, do not produce the effects found in other contexts, which requires some rethinking about these types of territories.

Although it is widely understood that barriers to successful collaboration and knowledge sharing between universities and other social agents exist, few studies have attempted to measure and map these perceived barriers or investigate what can mitigate them. In this context, this work aims to identify the factors affecting the barriers perceived by academics in their relationship with the environment. The study was based on data derived from a survey applied to a sample of academics categorized in the Sistema Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación of Colombia and related to six higher education institutions located in the Colombian Caribbean region. It is generally accepted that the relation is not lineal but complex. Several authors have proposed a mediating role of quality systems in promoting innovation activities. The studies are mainly in the context of large companies where the capability to deploy quality systems and strategies is larger than in small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) and therefore difficult to extrapolate the conclusions. This work presents an empirical study of the mediating role of quality systems on innovation in SMEs. ISO 9001 has been selected due to the tendency of these companies to initiate the quality journey with this system. The basic assumption is that ISO 9001certification will stimulate the organization to adopt some quality specific activities related with knowledge management practices (KMPs), such as collaborative and participative activities and learning and ...

The research was supported on several interviews achieved at Spain and Colombia to researchers and logistics managers. Using a crossed analysis of the literature and the interviews’ data, several theoretical proposals were synthetized in order to explain the barriers to horizontal collaboration perceived by managers in the LSP context. As a conclusion, the perception of the profit/risk ratio is the most used decision making mechanism by logistics managers to get into a collaborative alliance.

Research limitations/implications This paper presents a theoretical framework that underscores the influence of TMT on different dimensions of ACAP.
