Exits represent the “end phase” of the start-up process, at least for the founders and the early investors. For high-growth venture-capital-backed companies, exits are often considered the ultimate goal of building a profitable venture. These ventures are intended from the beginning to harvest the financial value created by the business at some point in the future, and return capital to early investors. Design/methodology/approach The authors tracked 5,744 merger and acquisition transactions that have occurred between European and US tech start-ups since 2012. Data are drawn from CrunchBase, the most comprehensive database of high-tech companies and investors with information on the companies and investors around the world. The authors then compared the trends of acquisitions between European and US companies. Findings Results show that US companies are far more inclined to make acquisitions...

Skin metastases from colon tumors occur in only 4% of cases of metastatic colorectal cancer. They are most often located on the abdominal skin. We report a case of 54-year-old male patient with a cutaneous metastatic focus on the lower abdomen as the initial presenting symptom of an underlying colon cancer.

Scholars agree on the fact that cross shareholdings among banks, insurance companies and institutional firms (Charkham 1994, Baums 1993), combined with long term shareholdings (Gerschenkron 1989), and close relationships and interlocking between board members of different companies (Tilly 1969, Hopt and Prigge 1998), are the main features of bank-firms relationships in Germany. Specifically the main purpose of the paper is to demonstrate, for the panel of German companies investigated, that bank-firm relationship relies not only on patrimonial linkages but also on personal relationships. In the light of the sweeping changes that this model has undergone since the late 1990s, an empirical study has been carried out regarding relationships (patrimonial and personal) among the first 100 German...

This study explores the characteristics of the Italian Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India and aims to fill the gap identified in literature by providing a comprehensive empirical analysis of this issue. The study specifically focuses on the localization drivers of Italian MNCs that internationalized in India. In order to investigate the research questions, a unique database of Italian firms that invested in India was created. The number of Italian companies with subsidiaries in India was found to be low. In terms of geographical distribution, the sample showed prevalence in New Delhi, followed by Mumbai and Bangalore. The main driver for localization choice was found to be the general economic importance of the city, and a majority of the sampled companies chose the place of establishment of their Indian subsidiary mainly based on the location of th...

Based on an in-depth literature review carried out with a systematic approach, the chapter aims at identifying and in-depth describing the external and internal barriers that affect the implementation of CE principles. In the end, a comprehensive map of such barriers and possible ways to overcome these are reported as the main contributions of the study.

The topic under investigation was approached under a managerial perspective with the final aim to identify and describe the main factors that enable and/or inhibit successful implementation of digital technologies for teaching and learning at the bottom of the pyramid (BoP). First of all, a comprehensive and systemized literature review has been performed outlining/identifying these factors. Then, to robustly grasp the findings, a deeper assessment through a multiple descriptive case study analysis on the key factors behind a successful implementation of ICTs for education at the BoP level has been carried out.

Understanding what influences the failure or survival of new ventures is increasingly attracting the interest of scholars, practitioners, and policymakers, mainly because of the role that startups play in innovation. Studying failure events presents a series of challenges that scholars should bear in mind when approaching this topic, starting from the definition of terms to the lack of data to analyze such events. The literature on business failures is scattered among different fields of research and lacks a comprehensive framework. We address this gap performing a systematic literature review. 74 papers focusing on new ventures’ failure have been reviewed and analyzed to identify the main causes of failure. In doing so, we identify four main categories of causes of new venture failure. Namely, I) resources, with a specific focus on human and financial capital; II) strategic/managerial...

Methodology: The data are collected during the determinative initial phases of the venture creation. Specifically, a cluster analysis is applied on a sample of 107 Italian innovative startups and their 254 founders. The three emerging clusters show significant differences in terms of entrepreneurial profile and the startup's fundraising ability. Findings: Some specific traits of the entrepreneurial profile of the new venture (mainly the educational background and previous experience), may have an initial imprinting effect on its firm profile and, hence, its likelihood to grow and be successful. Research and managerial implications: Work and international experience appear to be crucial success factors for startups at the very early stage. These characteristics prove to be strong enablers of fundraising, which happens to be vital at this particular time. Research limitations: A crosscountry analysis should be performed to better understand the positioning of the Italian startup ecosystem, and to overcome the country specificities of the sample. Originality of the paper: The novelty of this work is represented by the exploration of a population on which we have no great prior knowledge, in a significant, yet peculiar, phase of its life. There are not many empirical/qualitative updated works related to the analysis of the characteristics of Italian startups and their founders.

The real challenge for frugal innovation is to introduce something new or different (innovating) whilst being sparing with resources (frugal). Traditionally, it has been investigated in relation to emerging and developing countries. However, scholars and institutions have pointed out that the phenomenon is growing in relevance in advanced economies too. As a consequence, some scholars have started soliciting attempts to systematize this emerging field of research. Based on these premises, the study aims to: explore how the frugal innovation concept has developed over the years; analyze the main key findings from the extant literature on frugal innovation to lay a foundation for subsequent works, by identifying gaps in current knowledge; highlight new directions for future research. In doing so, we carried out a systematic literature review (SLR) and analyzed 113 articles that have been published since 1990. We asked experts to validate the main research gaps we had identified through the SLR. As a whole, results show that experts identify - for both emerging and developing countries and for advanced economies - various relevant future research directions.

Based on a multiple case studies approach, the study provides important insights into the young entrepreneurship stream of research by examining the phenomenon of born global under the lenses of entrepreneur's age. Lots of similarities emerge between young entrepreneurs in early internationalising firms from Lithuania and Italy. Findings suggest that almost all entrepreneurs tend to improve the visibility of the company by participating in national and international start-up contests. These are to be considered, along with the development of young entrepreneurs' professional bridging networks, as key drivers for acquiring capital and necessary connections for company's early internationalisation.
