In this preliminary study one focus is on the differences, the so-called 'shifts', between an original abstract and its translation, specifically on the optional shifts. The translation shifts are explored using Vinay and Darbelnet's methodology for the analysis of translation, as described in Munday (2008: 56 ff.). I will take the number of optional shifts (including optional additions and omissions) as an indicator of the degree of 'freedom' in translation, and based on that degree I will try to determine whether self-translation as a mode of translation differs from 'ordinary' translation. The analyzed corpus consists of bilingual abstracts (in language combinations German-Croatian, Croatian-English, Croatian-German, English-Croatian, and English-German) from a collection of papers on translation (Karabalić, Vladimir and Marija Omazić 2008). Another focus is on strategies and procedures commonly employed in selftranslation of abstracts, which is investigated by means of an online survey.

A comparative analysis of three target texts of the same source text was carried out. The corpus consists of Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and three different Croatian translations, done by three different translators in three different time periods (1920, 1953, and 1987). ST metaphoric expressions were identified and copied into a database, where they were aligned with the corresponding TT1, TT2, and TT3 translation solutions. The translation solutions were classified according to a new typology, which combines CMT with the existing typologies in TS. In order to account for the motivation for the different translational solutions, as well as for the effects of using particular procedures, the identified metaphorical expressions and the translational solutions were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively, taking into account different parame...

The paper gives an overview of cross-linguistic and translation research of metaphor, focusing on theoretical and methodological, but also applied aspects. In addition, a new typology for metaphor translation analysis is presented, along with its potential application.

The specific translation tasks that we will target in this paper are translating culture-based items from English into Croatian, as well as translating phraseology. Further analysis focuses on whether the distribution of these cognitive mechanisms is the same for strategies targeting different language items and examines the reasons for possible unevenness, stipulating whether their established role in translation calls for and justifies their incorporation in translation theory, pedagogy, and practice.

The study identifies the translation strategies that may be termed as foreignizing or domesticating, compares the three translations in order to see to what extent those strategies are used in the different translations and whether there is a diachronic change. The linguistic, cultural, political and other implications of using one or the other strategy are considered.

The paper presents the results of a case study on a set of English subtitles of one Croatian movie. Metaphor translation procedures were analyzed using Conceptual Metaphor Theory. There are four basic ways to translate metaphors: a. using the same conceptual metaphor, b. using a different conceptual metaphor, c. using a non-metaphorical paraphrase; and d. deleting the metaphor. In addition, a non-metaphorical expression can be translated by a metaphorical expression. Metaphors are mental, linguistic, but also cultural entities. Since translation in the contemporary age is recognized as both linguistic and cultural transfer, translating metaphors is at the core of the translation task. Many conceptual metaphors are universal and can be found in (almost) all languages, but some are culturally specific, appearing in just one language (group). This case study shows that the universality of metaphor influences...

This research shows that even highly proficient Croatian speakers of English as a second language (L2) are sometimes not able to fully understand the calques used in Croatian mass media unless they are familiar with the meaning of their source template in English. The research is done by way of an experiment built inPsychoPy(Pierce, 2007). The implications of this research could be of special interest to persons involved in designing media texts, professional and student translators, as well as to mass media consumers.
