Clinical tests included salivary measurment, oral and denture hygiene assesment, age of dentures and denture swabs for Candida culture on Sabouraud growth medium. Results have shown no significant differences between the two groups in quantity of saliva , oral and denture hygiene habits and denture age. However, in denture stomatitis group dentures were less older (6-10 years) then in controls (>10 years) but tended to be dirtier and related to the higher degree of denture stomatitis. The age of dentures was not related to the degree of inflammation but was with the degree of Candida colonization. Significant difference was obtained in the degree of Candida colonization on the fitting denture surface between denture stomatitis and control group. Poor denture hygiene favour colonization of Candida which interact as initiative local factors in the development of denture stomatitis.

Research paper thumbnail of Assessment of Allergies to Food and Additives in Patients with Angioedema, Burning Mouth Syndrome, Cheilitis, Gingivostomatitis, Oral Lichenoid Reactions, and Perioral Dermatitis

Oral and perioral diseases mainly include angioedema, burning mouth syndrome, cheilitis, gingivostomatitis, oral lichenoid reactions, and perioral dermatitis. Previous studies were focused on delayed-type oral allergies by performing patch testing but did not include tests for immediate-type allergic reactions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine common nutritive and additive allergens in the prevalent oral and perioral diseases by using skin prick tests. Our study evaluated 230 participants, i.e. 180 patients with oral/perioral diseases (angioedema, burning mouth syndrome, cheilitis, gingivostomatitis, oral lichenoid reactions, and perioral dermatitis), and 50 healthy control subjects. The results of skin prick tests showed that immediate-type allergic reactions to food and additives were mostly seen in patients with burning mouth syndrome (40%) and cheilitis (33.3%), whereas allergies were least frequently observed in perioral dermatitis (10%) and gingivostomatitis (20%). Fruits, mushrooms, and vegetables were the most frequent causes of nutritive allergies in oral and perioral diseases. The most commonly identified additive allergens were glutaraldehyde, citric acid, and sodium glutamate. Study results suggest the possible association with nutritive and additive allergies be considered in cases of persistent oral mucosal or perioral skin disease accompanied by respective medical history.

Research paper thumbnail of Different Protocols of Photobiomodulation Therapy of Hyposalivation

The purpose of our study was to evaluate the effects of different wavelengths of PBM on salivation in patients suffering from hyposalivation aiming at determination of optimal treatment protocol. This study included 30 patients whose major salivary glands were treated with low-intensity diode laser BTL2000 (Medical Technologies, s.r.o., Czech Republic) during 10 consecutive days. Patients were randomly assigned into two groups, each of 15 patients, and treated with PBM of 830 nm and PBM of 685 nm, respectively. The whole unstimulated and stimulated saliva quantities were measured each day during 10 days, before and after laser treatment, and at 10th day after treatment was ended. Results have shown that the laser treatment significantly improves salivation (p < 0.0001) in both groups after...

Research paper thumbnail of Rekolonizacija gljivica Candida albicans u pacijenata s protetskim stomatitisom nakon terapije niskoenergetskim laserom
