The judiciary, as the last hope of the common man and custodian of the law plays an important role in the fight against corruption. Regrettably, judicial corruption has devalued and derailed society's fundamental mechanism for impartial administration of justice. The enviable role of the judiciary has been dented by serious allegations of corruption against the hallowed temple of justice. Some judges have betrayed their oaths of office by engaging in wanton corruption. Such corrupt activities of some judges have caused serious damage to the credibility and integrity of the judiciary. The common man's quest for justice is further diminished by corrupt characters in the judiciary. In order to boost the citizens' confidence in the judicial system, judges must demonstrate incorruptibility and impartiality. The war against corruption in the judiciary sho...

Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude, or the removal of organs.[1] Different actors play a prominent role in addressing the issue of human trafficking. Among them are legislative bodies, law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and NGOs. It is important that the actors cooperate with each other in order to combat human trafficking efficiently.

Abortion remains one of the most controversial, emotional and burning political issues of our tim... more Abortion remains one of the most controversial, emotional and burning political issues of our time. Unsafe abortion is a serious public health problem and human rights issue. The pervasive criminalization of abortion in Nigeria is a serious obstacle to improving access to safe and legal abortion. Women’s lack of access to safe legal abortion is a major cause of high rates of maternal mortality. The Nigerian government’s failure to fulfill its human rights obligations under national, regional and international law is largely responsible for this situation. Overcoming these considerable barriers requires governments to sustain a firm commitment to women’s human rights and to ensure access to safe and legal abortion services. Women’s restrictive legal access to safe abortion services violates their human rights and is perhaps one of the pervasive manifestations of unjustified discrimination against women. This article attempts a justification of women’s right of access to safe and lega...

The health, physiological, sexual, psychological, and human rights effects of female genital muti... more The health, physiological, sexual, psychological, and human rights effects of female genital mutilation (FGM) are described and various ways to address the problem are outlined, including the health approach, the cultural approach, the women’s empowerment approach, and the human rights approach. Long-term complications include sexual frigidity; genital malformation; urine retention resulting in repeated urinary infections; obstruction of menstrual flow leading to frequent reproductive tract infections and infertility; chronic pelvic and obstetric complications; and prolonged and obstructed labour. Also, due to damaged sexual organs, sexual intercourse can result in tissue lacerations, which greatly increases risk of HIV transmission. The same is true during childbirth and subsequent loss of blood. The use of law should thus be one component of a multi-disciplinary approach; and outreach efforts by civil society and governments aimed at changing perceptions and attitudes regarding FG...

The abduction of the Chibok girls has attracted global criticism by the international community w... more The abduction of the Chibok girls has attracted global criticism by the international community who has denounced the terrorist act and advocated for the release of the girls. The kidnapping is an act to instil fear and wage war against access to education in Northern Nigeria. The larger issue when addressing the educational disadvantage of the North is the problem of religious fundamentalism which has deprived the North of progress in education and economic development. The lack of political will by the leaders of the northern Nigeria to elevate the educational level of the girl-child as enunciated in the Child’s Right Act, is an issue we discussed. We look beyond the abduction of the girls to the underlying issues of denial of their fundamental human rights to basic education and dignity of the human person which is the entitlement of all children in the world. The paper finds that apart from the core issue of terrorism situating the saga in its proper legal context is a failure of law to protect the most vulnerable of the society-the girl-child by the global north and global south as an infringement of the internationally accepted basic human needs. These includes, failure of their rights to freedom of movement; from discrimination; dignity of the child and right to free, compulsory and universal primary education, among others. In addition the heinous crimes being committed against them include rape, forced marriages, forced labour, false imprisonment, child trafficking, kidnapping, and perhaps murders, to name a few. All these are against the Nigerian Child Rights Act which makes copious provisions on these violations and gives stiff penalties for their infringement. We conclude by advocating for compulsory basic education as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution strongly supported by the Universal Basic Education policy. No meaningful development can take place if the issue of girl-child education is not factored into political and national development process.
