Both documents are drawn up according to Greek legal norms, but include notes of confirmation and validation, written in Arabic, which utilise and adapt legal formulae and styles established in the Islamic legal sphere. Each, in its different way, points to a certain synthesis, or fusion, of Greek-Byzantine and Muslim practice, and a juridical multiculturalism that one can find also in other inter-religious contexts.

The archive document is the symbol and figure of power even when this is declined in the sphere of private law. A Greek parchment of 1141 attests the donation of sacred relics in favor of the Archimandritate of Messina: authors and recipients, witnesses, formulary and Byzantine lexicon contribute to a precise script of the Norman political device in the era in which Roger II and his minister Giorgio of Antioch have made of the forms borrowed from the Byzantine Empire a refined instrument of the kingdom

Research paper thumbnail of Legal Language and Practice in Twelfth- and Thirteenth-Century Messina: The Evidence from Greek Private Documents

Multilingual and Multigraphic Documents and Manuscripts of East and West, 2018

The Church and Greek monastic institutions continued to exert widespread influence, and the Byzantine cultural tradition was even more persistent. Document analysis supports two interpretive paths from which multilingual phenomena can be singled out and studied. (1) Social interactions. Through these legal transactions social interaction are represented through writing in one of the three official languages of the kingdom, Greek, Latin or Arabic. (2) The language of the documents. Written deeds translate legal procedure into a special language. Laws, formulas and clauses guarantee the validity of both the action and the engraphon which that action demonstrates and warrants. The Greek language in the document, therefore, has its own vocabulary, syntax and rhetoric. Some scholars deem the Greek language of these Southern Italian documents artificial but coarse, whereas others consider it early evidence of the transition from medieval to modern Greek; it was certainly exposed to contacts with and loans from other linguistic sources, but it was also embroidered with erudite and outdated terms, hinting at the consultation of lexicons

The collection aims to provide readers with a critical overview of current research as well as new insights concerning political, institutional, economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects of the Italian regions under Byzantine rule. The methodological approach of the volume combines history with archaeology and art history, while remaining focused on the general framework of the early medieval Mediterranean. The result is a fresh and up-to-date synthesis that can be useful both for specialists and students.

Research paper thumbnail of Documenting Multiculturalism. Co-existence, law and multiculturalism in the administrative and legal documents of Norman and Hohenstaufen Sicily, c.1060-c.1266.

Documenting Multiculturalism is a new research project (2017–2023) based at the University of Oxf... more Documenting Multiculturalism is a new research project (2017–2023) based at the University of Oxford and the Università degli Studi di Palermo and funded by an Advanced Grant of approximately €2.5 million from the European Research Council.

The project will investigate comprehensively and systematically the coexistence of the diverse confessional, ethnic and linguistic communities of the island of Sicily under Norman and Hohenstaufen rule — Arabic-speaking Muslims and Jews, Greek Christians, and Latin Christians.

It will investigate:
• the legal foundations upon which the coexistence of the subject communities rested;
• the nature, extent and results of cultural, linguistic and social interactions between them;
• and variation in the above, from time to time c. 1060 – c. 1266, and from place to place within the island.

The ambitious objective is to create the fundamental tools to study, and to begin to write, the history of the subject communities of Norman Sicily from the bottom up, using documentary rather than narrative sources, and illustrating as far as possible the full variety in space and time.

The project will do this by making new critical editions of all of the administrative and legal documents for Norman Sicily, in the three principal administrative languages — Arabic, Greek and Latin. These texts will populate a database, to which further data from the non-documentary sources will be added. The database will then be used to generate a series of powerful electronic research tools, which will be both the means to meet the ends of this particular project, and ends in themselves that will revolutionise the future study of all aspects of the history of Norman Sicily.

At the end of the project, a series of summative studies will document, analyse and discuss different aspects of coexistence and popular multiculturalism in Norman Sicily, and set the case of Sicily in the wider Mediterranean context.

What is distinctive about this project is that not only the publication of its research objectives, but also the tools that it will create in order to achieve them, will revolutionise the future study of all aspects of the cultural, economic and social history of Norman Sicily.
