Firms need to become aware of the different nature of risks, in order to handle with them, and try to reduce their potential effects on profitability. We consider both counterpart, and financial risks, and give some insights into the basic hedging techniques firms can use. The focus is on the firms, so we don’t refer to intermediaries and financial institution, but keep attention on firms’ hedging. Together with the risks, we consider the financial management of international firms and refer to reinvoicing centres as a possibility to manage the global activities with high efficiency.

More specifically, it is a way to implement internationalization strategies for expansion when outsourcing is done in markets culturally close to the domestic ones, and for diversification when outsourcing is carried out on markets distant from the domestic ones. However, outsourcing is not always a first best choice, and more and more firms are revising their strategies and deciding for back- or re-shoring. This chapter discusses the factors firms should take into account in their outsourcing decision, and highlights the main risks connected to this choice.

Thus, it is crucial in such situation that entrepreneurial firms can survive and even grow so that the whole economy can benefit from a higher level of resilience. The purpose of this study is to understand how entrepreneurial orientation (EO) brings about firms' performance through the moderating role of CEOs' self-transcendence values in the context of a low-resilient sanctioned economy.Design/methodology/approachThis is a quantitative research that employs hierarchical regression analysis of a sample of 114 Iranian entrepreneurial firms composed of 62 knowledge-based and 52 creative firms.FindingsThe analysis revealed that in the low-resilient sanctioned economy, Iran, EO-performance link is moderated by the level of CEOs' self-transcendence value, that is, higher level of CEO self-transcendence leads to stronger impact of EO on performance. This moderation is not different in creative sector vs. knowledge-based sector of the economy.Originality/valueThis paper addresses a major gap in the traditional EO-performance relationship which is related to the role of CEO values. Also, the context of Iran's low level of economic resilience adds more novelty to this study, emphasizing on the role of CEO personal values of self-transcendence in times of crisis. The results could also be generalized in many economies now facing the COVID-19 pandemic crisis during which CEOs' self-transcendence values are vitally important in overcoming the difficulties of doing business in such situation.

International post-bureaucratic firms need to learn how to manage the increasing diversity and how to pursue hybridization, without scarifying their identity, and the values, which have been crucial for firm's competitiveness. This chapter explores the challenges connected to the internationalization of post-bureaucratic organizations, and focuses on the key role of cultural competence. When firms enter culturally distant markets, they face the opportunities and threats connected with cultural distance, and managers' cultural competence is a key factor for the building up of cultural bridges, that is social mechanisms able to reduce the perception of the distance. Cultural bridges help firms to learn from the environment, and to pursue the final aims of their international strategy.

The authors develop theoretical speculations to investigate better the role of artificial intelligence (AI) as an innovative tool to improve buyer-supplier relationships, creating better performance outcomes.Design/methodology/approachThe research is based on a theoretical investigation aiming at exploring the role of AI-based solutions for managing buyer-supplier relationships. The conceptual approach allows us to identify some research streams (e.g. co-working collaborations in supply chain management) by proposing a matrix that helps clarify the analysis's directions.FindingsThe results show the importance of AI that can help the operator in accessing supplier information, including current prices, available stocks, and delivery status, thereby reducing the risk of information asymmetry. AI is intended not only as a technology tool but also as an innovative solution to promote business...

This study contributes to the debate through a new perspective of analysis based on behavioral reasoning theory (BRT). Specifically, this research analyses the role cultural values play in formation of the reasoning behind entrepreneurial behavior. The data and variables are taken from the GLOBE project and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) for a multiple regression analysis spanning from 2007 to 2017 for 50 countries. The results show that, with the exception of Institutional Collectivism, all of GLOBE’s cultural dimensions affect the reasoning justifications behind entrepreneurial intentions in various countries. Thus, the novel contribution of the present research is the application of BRT in explaining entrepreneurial intentions. This contribution is substantial to the international entrepreneurship field through clarification of the role of cultural values in the reasoning processes behind entrepreneurial activities of nations. Some findings are surprising with regard to the conventional understandings. These findings are fully discussed in the concluding sections.

Image segmentation in medical imaging has long been a problem in radiological image processing. M... more Image segmentation in medical imaging has long been a problem in radiological image processing. Most of the image segmentation methods in traditional vision algorithms are difficult to achieve high-resolution image segmentation due to the complexity of the algorithm. This article proposes an image segmentation method based on an optimized cellular neural network. This method introduces a non-linear template and data quantization on the basis of a basic network model, which greatly reduces the computational complexity while maintaining the accuracy of image segmentation. We then applied the method to a computer-aided system to classify tumor lesions in mammograms. Finally, we propose an FPGA-based multilevel optimization architecture for energy-efficient cellular neural networks. The optimization scheme includes three levels: system level, module level, and design space. This solution improves computing performance by increasing system parallelism, using data reuse technology to fully utilize loading bandwidth, and using data quantization to reduce computational redundancy. It also introduces pipeline and dual cache structures to optimize memory access, and analyzes the limited resources through the Roofline model. System for best performance. The experimental results show that the FPGA accelerator in this article can improve unit performance by 34% compared with other existing research work. The nonlinear quantified cellular neural network proposed in this article can reduce LUT resource consumption by 74% and energy of 48.2%. Compared with the original network, in the two projection position segmentation results of the mammogram, only 1.5% and 0.6% of the accuracy loss, respectively. INDEX TERMS Cellular neural network, FPGA technology, analysis of mammograms, image segmentation.

Values are concepts or beliefs, which refer to desirable states or behaviours and are used as standards or criteria to select or evaluate behaviour and events (Schwartz, 1994). They influence individuals' perceptions and choices, and this happens both at an individual and at a collective level. Our study is a working progress paper as a first attempt to investigate the effects of cultural values on the demand of luxury goods, to answer the following questions: Does consumers' perception of luxury goods vary across countries? Does culture affect this perception?

An empirical analysis of data from 155 Iranian knowledge-based firms was performed by employing the PLS method of structural equation modelling. Findings show that there is semantic redundancy among the different dimensions of EO. Specifically, just two of the five dimensions, proactiveness and risk-taking, could account for all the effects of EO on firm performance in the context of the Iranian knowledge-based industry. In addition, moderation, spuriousness, suppression of industrial contingencies and control variables were not at play. From a theoretical point of view, our work confirms that scholars should avoid considering EO as a holistic gestalt in different contexts. It also highlights that proactiveness and risk-taking are the orientations with the strongest effects on performance in Iranian knowledge-b...

Design/methodology/approach The study, an analysis of two linear regression models, examines how cultural values, measured by the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness Research “should be” scores, affect companies’ environmental proactivity measured by CDS. Data about CDS derive from the Carbon Disclosure Project, which monitors Global 500 companies each year. Findings The analysis reveals that the values of in-group collectivism, performance orientation, assertiveness and uncertainty avoidance negatively affect firms’ environmental proactivity, while future orientation and gender egalitarianism have a positive impact. Research limitations/implications In spite of the limitations inherent in the indicator and the limited sample, the paper has some interesting implications. On a theoret...

The first factor is the institutional context as the whole of formal and informal rules of the country target. The second is the market commitment, intended as resources committed in a particular market area: the experience firms get in foreign markets and a general attitude to maintain the international presence for a long period are the main sources of market knowledge. The paper develops a Multiple Case Study analysis of four small international Italian firms. Built on the institutional theory and on the market commitment construct, the paper offers a conceptual model that shows that the institutional context strongly influences the amount of resources involved in the internationalization process, while the market commitment affects more the complexity – and intensity-of the process.
