In the Iron age, the early city-state of Padua was the seat of a leading aristocratic polity ruli... more In the Iron age, the early city-state of Padua was the seat of a leading aristocratic polity ruling over the central Veneto region. From the 9th-8th to the1st century BC, when Padua rapidly and peacefully merged within the expanding organization of the Roman state, the city hosted a diffuse network of different scale craft workshops and activity areas. This resaerch reviews the craft production sites so far discovered at Padua in terms of chronology, function, urban location, size (absolute and average extension) and lenght of occupation. The general evidence shows that the craftman works as attached specialists for the local elites, that manage the supply of raw material and the distribution of prestige goods. Around the 5th century BC, while Padua became a city-state and protocurrency circulated commonly, a little market space opened to indipendent craftman production, but most of the industry, specially the metallurgic ones, remained under elites control till the romanization.

The expansion of the archaeological investigations carried out in 2016 has eventually made it pos... more The expansion of the archaeological investigations carried out in 2016 has eventually made it possible to clarify function and dating of the controversial “tubs of the Guà” which have turned out to be an extended agricultural recovery system, by means of burying river gravel, of a large oodplain affected by several events of over ow and ood of the Agno-Guà stream, such as a paroxysmal episode probably occurred in the second half of the nineteenth century.

This paper focuses on the stratigraphic problems concerning post-holes, a recurring but crucial e... more This paper focuses on the stratigraphic problems concerning post-holes, a recurring but crucial evidence in an ar- chaeological excavation. Serious attention is required in order to evaluate the stratigraphic relationships between post-holes and the surrounding contexts. A superficial approach could cause serious mistakes in the assignment of this type of traces to the different phases of the site’s periodization.
