Frederick's court poets made the "Pülle" a key concept in their propaganda, conferring the very word a fascination where its antiquity, beauty and complex heritage all concur.
The birth of a nation that was interrupted by several agents, leaving behind no adequate political heir, but an enormous artistic legacy.

This article contains a survey of reasons why Thomasin's German-speaking audience at Aquileia could actually be concerned with Hungarian politics. I also try to identify the queen and to reconstruct the historical context in which these lines were composed. Italian history is also a part of the study, since the connection with the Papacy at the time was crucial to understand the complex (love-hate?) relations between the Empire and Kingdom of Hungary.

Of course, the absence of a modern, complete edition of BHL 2723 does not allow to reach but temporary conclusions. The next ancient manuscript to be found could provide entirely different evidence concerning the life of this saintly monachoparthenos.
Latin Hagiography is once more to be considered a promising field of researches for passionate scholars, even in the field of Anglo-Saxon studies.

Liestøl knew that the stick had been found immediately over the layer of the great fire of 1332, so that it may have been carved in the early 14th century (unless one assumes a longer time between the inscription and the deposition of the object). The stick has been inscribed on all four sides, and is broken at one end, so that there are four corresponding lacunae in it. The text appears to be a sort of charm, where protective and hostile magic mix, and it reads as follows:

The capital of Venetian Dalmatia in later Middle Ages occurs several times rather as a city under (nominal) Hungarian rule, unlike the undoubtedly Italian Pola. This is probably due to the bond between Germany and Hungary. In the very end of the Middle Ages, Zara is mostly described as a Venetian stronghold. German pilgrims describe the city in details: a stop at the shrine of St Simeon the Elder had become customary in their travel schedule.
