To tackle these problems treatment systems are needed to be on-site, cost-effective, and self-sustainable, delivering chemical-free treated effluent that would be entirely harmless to nature and residents. Decentralized onsite integrated waste management system (DOSIWAM) is naturally operating, relatively simple and can be designed to provide low-cost sanitation and environmental protection with additional benefits from the reuse of water and biogas. In the current research, Effective positioning and modeling of the non-mechanised, gravity-governed wastewater treatment system is carried out at refuge floor which is coined to be proposed as "environmental floor" for G+32 storeyed residential building. To assess the viability of the treatment system and quantify the benefits coming from it, a comparative analytical analysis for structural and seismic response of both structures (with and without environmental floors) is conducted. The behavioral response of the structures studied from the obtained results, clearly states that the locations of DOSIWAM are safe. With minor changes in design and construction, the system would be effective in urban areas, especially for multi-storey buildings.

Aquatic phytoremediation is a nature-based solution. It has the potential to provide efficient, adaptable, and multi-targeted treatment of polluted waters. The aim of this research is to evaluate non-mechanized, low-cost onsite treatment of waste water intrusions. It includes an experimental set up with three replicates. Each consists of a modified flow pattern under outdoor conditions. Experimental set up A and B were provided with macrophytes, water lettuce and duckweed, respectively, with plant coverage at 50% and 90%. Experimental set up C was a controlled set up without macrophytes. The highest removal of BOD, COD and Total solids by using water lettuce were observed to be 89%, 77% and 38.5%, respectively. By using duckweed, the highest removal of BOD, COD and Total solids were observed at 88%, 66% and 27.59%, respectively. Removal was also observed in Set up ...

However, a practical and thorough implementation methodology addressing the project life cycle phases is still inadequate. The present study has developed a novel phase-wise sustainable–lean implementation methodology for high-rise residential projects.Design/methodology/approachThe current study has identified the 50 direct conceptual interactions between 11 lean principles and 11 sustainability criteria encompassing 44 different attributes covering 174 sustainability actions. A panel of nine experts validated these interactions, and 50 integration vectors were proposed addressing different phases of the project life cycle of high-rise residential buildings. The experts also analysed the identified integration vectors for their current and likely future implementation in high-rise residential projects.FindingsThe interactions between lean and sustainability pr...

Automation of nanotechnology construction can allow for the creation of structures from advanced homes to gigantic skyscrapers much more quickly and at much lower cost and higher efficiency. In the near future, Nanotechnology can be used to sense cracks in foundations of structures and can send nanobots to repair them. It can also provide self powered failure prediction and prevising mechanisms for high capital structures. This paper explores the vision in making of smart and innovative infrastructure and leading a smart city with the help of application of nanotechnology in civil structures. The study of nanoscience and various nanoparticles and their implementation in construction field is illustrated in this paper. The article further emphasizes more on the futuristic demand and application of nanotechnology in constructing smart structures. The...

Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) analysis is used to make comparative assessments of various available alternatives by considering various criteria and sub criteria in complex situation. The paper shows the application of three MCDM techniques viz. - AHP, ANP and TOPSIS to a hypothetical problem concerning the choice of the most sustainable wastewater treatment technology amongst Activated Sludge Process (ASP), Bio Tower and Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) for JSPM Hadapsar, an educational institute campus in Pune. These models enable to consider social, economic, technical and environmental aspects along with their sub criteria and to compare them to find the best alternative. The AHP, ANP and TOPSIS techniques are applied through specific software packages like Expert Choice 11, Super Decisions and Topsis Solver 2012 respectively. ...

Removed and reprocessed deteriorated pavement material which is recycled is termed as Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). In India during construction of flexible pavement different types of bituminous layers are in practice depending upon CBR of sub-grade and traffic count i.e. CVPD of the road stretch. Depending upon types of bituminous layer i.e. PC Seal Coat, Bituminous Macadam(BM), Dense grade bituminous Macadam (DBM), Semi Dense Bituminous Concrete (SDBC) or Bituminous Concrete(BC) Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement can classified in different groups These classified RAP groups materials will have different characteristics i.e. Rap aggregates and Recovered bitumen of different group of RAP will have different characteristics. In this study characterization of RAP limited to Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) and Aggregate Abra...

Environment fulfils this need of human being by providing different natural resources like rivers, lakes, streams etc. This need of human being demands for clean water for drinking and recreation purpose but now-a-days, due to the reasons like increased population, urbanization & industrialization are getting polluting these natural resources. As the demand for water increases, making more efficient use of water becomes more important. River Mutha as it passes through the city of Pune receives domestic waste as well as industrial waste. Untreated or partially treated wastewater, which is a negative externality of urban water use, is widely used for irrigation in water scarce regions like Purandar, Daund, Haweli, and Baramati having undulating ground profile where average rainfall is around 400 to 500 mm. Marginal quality water or water whose quality might pose a threat to sustainable agriculture...

The study evaluates the feasibility of the non-mechanised DOSIWAM system by comparing it with the mechanised activated sludge process (ASP) with the life cycle and cost assessment (LCA and LCCA) method. The LCA was carried out with the SimaPro software using the impact 2002+ method. Both systems served a multi-storeyed (G + 30) building with 890 population equivalent. The LCA results reveal that the non-mechanised DOSIWAM system has three to six times reduced environmental impacts than the ASP system in almost all impact categories. Although DOSIWAMS' weaker removal efficiency dominates in the results of aquatic eutrophication and acidification impact, the latter ...
