Saggi di Gianmario Borio, Deborah Burton, Daniele Carnini, Damien Colas Gallet, Angela Ida De Benedictis, Serena Facci, Francesco Fontanelli, Michela Garda, Anselm Gerhard, Michele Girardi, Francesco Izzo, Stefano La Via, Lewis Lockwood, Andrea Malnati, Candida Billie Mantica, Roberta Montemorra Marvin, Franco Piperno, Alessandro Roccatagliati, Angela Romagnoli, Daniele Sabaino, Tommaso Sabbatini, Graziella Seminara, Gloria Staffieri, Alice Tavilla, Anna Tedesco, Rodobaldo Tibaldi, Luca Zoppelli.

Such madness, as Goethe wrote, is indispensable in all theater, and yet in practice, sentiment and passion must be balanced by sense and reason. Exploring this tension between madness and reason, "Not without Madness" presents new analytical approaches to thinking about eighteenth - and nineteenth-century opera through the lenses of its historical and cultural contexts. In these twelve essays, Fabrizio Della Seta explores the concept of opera as a dramatic event and an essential moment in the history of theater. Examining the meaning of opera and the devices that produce and transmit this meaning, he looks at the complex verbal, musical, and scenic mechanisms in parts of "La sonnambula", "Ernani", "Aida", "Le nozze di Figaro", "Macbeth", and "Il trovatore". He argues that approaches to the study of opera must address performance, interpretation, composition, reception, and cultural ramifications. Purely musical analysis does not make sense unless we take into account music's dramatic function. Containing many essays available for the first time in English, Not without Madness bridges recent divisions in opera studies and will attract musicologists, musicians, and opera lovers alike.

It has often been the subject of literary studies but rarely applied to theatrical texts, where, instead, it is an essential dramaturgical tool given that theater is essentially the representation of acts of communication. “Saying not saying” is a functional tool for presenting scabrous or embarrassing content, such as patricide, incest, and generally sex in family relationships, with substantial cultural-historical and anthropological implications. After a historical and theoretical discussion, in which, among other things, the Wagnerian concept of “resonant silence” (tönendes Schweigen) is examined, the theme is exemplified with the analysis of scenes from Mozart's "La clemenza di Tito," Méhul's "Stratonice," Verdi's "Rigoletto" and Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg."

The article examines the autograph papers documenting the genesis of Aida, preserved at the Villa Verdi in Sant’Agata. The corpus comprises 345 folios, 38 of which consist of a fair copy of the full score of the discarded Sinfonia. The remaining 307 folios include sections in full score, fragments in skeleton score, continuity drafts and preparatory sketches relating to different phases of the composition as well as fragments of the libretto. Among the papers there are also materials relating to other works: Don Carlos (1867), the String Quartet, and Simon Boccanegra (1881). The article goes on to explore the genesis of two
sections from Aida: a stretta, later discarded, for the first act “terzetto”, and the opening of the third act in the revised version of 1871, including the romanza «O cieli azzurri». Verdi composed the melody of the latter before receiving Ghislanzoni’s verses, having already in mind both the poetic structure and the sentimental content of the piece.

The first performance of the new version in 1854 was a tremendous success, and the opera was quickly taken up by theatres around the world. This critical edition presents the 1854 version as the main score, and also makes available the full score and the original 1853 settings of the revised pieces. For this text Fabrizio della Seta used the composer's autograph and many secondary sources, but also Verdi's previously unknown sketches. These sketches helped corroborate the original readings and illuminate the work's compositional stages. A detailed critical commentary discusses source problems and anbiguities.
