In Late Antiquity, some metals started to be added to carbon based inks. We have records of five manuscripts from the Dead Sea Scrolls collection whose carbon inks were found to contain copper Also, lead was recently found as an additive in carbon inks on a charred fragment from Herculaneum. Furthermore, the earliest evidence of iron-gall ink was found in the Book of Proverbs (Codex Ms. Berol. orient. oct. 987) dating to the third fourth centuries ce. It has been suggested that along with carbon and iron-gall inks, there is no reason to think that purely tannin inks were not also in use in Egypt. However, so far, we just have evidence of a copper-tannin ink identified in a number of documents from Egypt in the first third centuries bce. Research paper thumbnail of THE COPTIC CODICES OF THE MUSEO EGIZIO, TURIN HISTORICAL, LITERARY AND CODICOLOGICAL FEATURES

The Coptic codices of the Museo Egizio provide an exceptional occasion for reconstructing the con... more The Coptic codices of the Museo Egizio provide an exceptional occasion for reconstructing the consistency of an ancient monastic library, as well as for documenting Late Antique Egypt’s narrative preferences, literary interests, and theological orientations. At the same time, they are a valuable witness to the history of the ancient book in its evolving intellectual, material, and technological aspects.

This volume, edited by Paola Buzi and Tito Orlandi, aims to guide readers – both specialists in this field and those who are simply interested in the cultural phenomena of Christian Egypt – through the Museo Egizio’s collection of Coptic literary manuscripts, particularly the papyrus codices from This (the well-known “capital” of the Protodynastic Period, located not far from Abydos), which the museum acquired in the 1820s from Bernardino Drovetti.

The volume is divided into two sections. The first section outlines the history of studies of these Coptic manuscripts since they reached Turin, their literary content, and their place in the broader context of Coptic literary production (Paola Buzi and Tito Orlandi). While the papyrus codices from This (Nathan Carlig) are the focus of this volume, there is also a chapter dedicated to a parchment codex of unknown provenance and biblical content, which Drovetti also purchased in Egypt (Francesco Valerio). Lastly, the bookbindings housed in the papyrus storeroom which are very likely detached from the papyrus codices, are analysed for the first time herein (Eliana Dal Sasso).
The second section is of a more technical nature and contains a detailed codicological description of the bookbindings (Eliana Dal Sasso) and papyrus codices, which led to the reconsideration of the codicological units’ composition in some cases (Nathan Carlig).
The content of both sections of the volume is based on accurate autoptical analysis and, in some cases, archaeometric measurements of the inks, in addition to the necessary literary and historical reflection.

This volume is one of the scientific outcomes of the ERC Advanced Grant PAThs–“Tracking Papyrus and Parchment Paths: An Archaeological Atlas of Coptic Literature. Literary Texts in their Geographical Context: Production, Copying, Usage, Dissemination, and Storage”, 3 funded by the European Research Council, Horizon 2020 programme, project no. 687567, hosted by Sapienza Università di Roma and directed by Paola Buzi (paths.uniroma1.it), and of the CMCL enterprise – “Corpus dei Manoscritti Copti Letterari” – founded and directed by Tito Orlandi (cmcl.it).

"The Urban Landscape of Bakchias: A Town of the Fayyūm from the Ptolemaic-Roman Period to Late An... more "The Urban Landscape of Bakchias: A Town of the Fayyūm from the Ptolemaic-Roman Period to Late Antiquity" summarises the results of field research conducted on the archaeological site of Bakchias, located in the north-eastern part of the Fayyūm region. Historical, historico-religious and papyrological studies are also presented. The book provides a clear and comprehensive overview of the rise and fall of the kome of Bakchias. The settlement was a thriving centre from at least the 26th dynasty up until the ninth or tenth centuries CE, although with differing levels of economic prosperity and urban development. Equal weight is given not only to the archaeological and topographical aspects but also to the historical and the religious, whilst never forgetting the relationship between the urban settlement and other villages of the Arsinoite nomos, which is famously a peculiar exception in Egyptian geography.

The final goal is to develop a critical methodology and a practical approach to scientific research in the field of Egyptology.

Specific Goal of the Edition 2019-2020 ("La pratica della scrittura in Egitto: form, funzioni, contesti")

This year, the course will propose an in-depth analysis of the forms and uses of ancient Egyptian writing through a diachronic perspective (from the origins to the later contaminations/rielaborations of the system) and a number of integrated approaches (philological, archaeological, cultural-historical). The main goal is to illustrate the variety of forms, the multiplicity of functions, the complexity of contexts of use of the system, providing the student
scripts (hieroglyphs, hieratic, demotic, Ptolemaic hieroglyphs) in relation to the main textual categories, the material supports, and the social-cultural contexts of writing practice.
The wide chronological range will allow the student to appreciate the synchronic specificities and the diachronic transformation of the script(s), refining her/his historical sensibility and critical skills in examination of the texts. The practical sessions will allow her/him to directly approach original objects and documents, learning to assess their manifest material dimension. Finally, the frontal classes will guide her/him in framing the sources in their historical and cultural background.
The final goal is to make the student independent before the issues raised by the different Egyptian
writing forms, rigorous in the methodological choices, critical in the interpretation of the data.

PAThs takes an original and pluridisciplinary approach, combining philology, codicology, archaeology and digital humanities, in order to explore the process of production, copying, usage, dissemination, and storage of Coptic works in relation to the concrete geographical contexts of origin of both the texts themselves and their related writing supports.
On the occasion of the third international conference of the project, the digital Archaeological Atlas of Coptic Literature will be launched.

Lectures and seminars in topics ranging from Literature to History to Codicology and Cataloguing shall cover the most central aspects of research and help in developing skills necessary for theoretical and practical tasks in the study of manuscripts.

Particular attention will be devoted to the develpment of Coptic Literature, to its “literary genres” and to the geography of Coptic manuscript production. Practical exercises will include analytical description of Coptic manuscripts.

The school is open to students and scholars of all disciplines, but some degree of knowledge of Christian Orient (not necessarily Coptic) as well as experience of study and/or research dealing with one of the oriental traditions is expected. Basic knowledge of the Coptic language is an appreciated prerequisite.

The class will be taught by internationally acknowledged specialists on the topics of Literature, Bible, Manuscript Tradition, Coptic Church etc.

Research paper thumbnail of A new 5-year Egyptological project at Sapienza University: " 'Sacri lapides Aegypti': from the scribes of temples to the copyists of scriptoria. The transformation of spaces of cult, identity and memory from pharaonic and Graeco-Roman Egypt to Christian Egypt" (PI: Paola Buzi)

“Sacri lapides” aims to analyze and provide documentary evidence concerning the transformation pr... more “Sacri lapides” aims to analyze and provide documentary evidence concerning the transformation processes of the sacred spaces assigned to cult, identity and memory from Pharaonic and Ptolemaic-Roman Egypt to Christian Egypt.
Such a task will be accomplished through both the topographical-functional analysis and the creation of an exhaustive digital catalogue of the temples and heathen shrines converted into places of Christian worship (basilicas, churches, monasteries, hermitages) designated to book production and preservation (libraries and scriptoria), besides, obviously, the cultural function.
Thus, “Sacri lapides” could be seen as the theoretical precondition as well as the archaeological follow-up inspection of the ERC project “PAThs”, the aim of which is to provide a representation of the geography of Coptic literary production by means of a thematically and chronologically searchable digital atlas.
Like the project “PAThs”, “Sacri lapides” has a twofold trait (archaeological and historic-philological), but, compared to that, it will be mainly focused on the architectural and planimetric features, by tangibly defining how and where Coptic Egypt was inserting its “knowledge places”.
They are therefore two complementary projects, which enrich each other, mutually integrating their respective outcomes.
“Sacri lapides” appears as a fully groundbreaking proposal, a complete exploration and a methodical consideration of the processes of physical permutation of the sacred space being totally lacking. In fact, the scholars who study the final period of Egyptian history until now have devoted themselves to the ideological-religious phenomena, overlooking (apart from some particular cases, which were in any case connected to regional ranges) an attentive analysis of the archaeological contexts and of the physical spaces. Thus, the future team would be composed, in equal proportion, of Egyptologists and Classical archaeologists.
The general catalogue (main product) will be accompanied by a series of likely innovative tools (by-products): 1) a survey of the historical and literary sources related to the setting up of Christian institutions within heathen temples, 2) a catalogue of the items of the temple décor bearing traces of reuse in Christian period, 3) an annotated survey of the Late-Dynastic devotional inscriptions, exhibiting an overwritten Christian text, 4) a survey of the Greek and Coptic literary sources dovetailing with the archaeological evidence.
Each of the aforesaid items will constitute not only a valuable research product, but also a substantial tool for future proposals.
Besides the traditional publications, the outcomes of the proposal will be conveyed through a specific website hosting the edition of the whole catalogue. Such data will be also inserted into the digital atlas of the Coptic literature realized by the ERC project “PAThs”, completing its contents within a thorough synergy between both proposals.

Qui è consultabile il bando:
http://www.uniroma1.it/didattica/corsiformazione/egittologia-dalla-formazione-alla-ricerca

Literary Texts in their Geographical Contexts. Production, Copying, Usage, Dissemination, and Storage” [http://paths.uniroma1.it/].

Although the Archaeological Atlas of Coptic Literature is still under construction, the "Paths" group considers important to share already its "philosophy" so that, when ready, users are aware of how it has been conceived.

For this reason, the "PAThs" Mission Statement will be continuously updated as soon as new "products" are ready and new methodological and scientific reflections have been carried out.
