The system performance reduction and the corresponding increase of transit time are often due to the increase of the freight flow without a corresponding increase of stacking and handling capacity. For this purpose it was decided to approach the problem by a discrete event simulation model, in order to reproduce the activities carried out inside an intermodal terminal, to calculate the total transit time and to identify the bottlenecks. The transit time of a cargo unit in a terminal is the summation of times required for the development of each phase of the process (waiting time + operational time). Therefore, the first step was the identification of the main activities and the analysis of waiting and operational phases, in order to quantify the times of each phase. For modelling the software Planima...

All the developed models are based on working criteria and operational rules of interlocking and line signaling systems. The modeling is based on a strongly modular object oriented approach capable to usefully simulate the process with all boundary conditions imposed by infrastructure, signaling and control systems.

The intensive programme employs an innovative multidisciplinary approach that combines a number of learning methods, such as: Lectures; Project-based learning; and Technical Visits as well as Thematic Seminars. We will work with approximately fifty undergraduate students and twenty professors in railway, transport and logistics from different locations from Europe. The targeted learning outcomes are to develop the undergraduate student's ability to initiate and carry out analysis, research, seminars and workshops with the purpose of solving railway and logistics-related problems.

The concepts and the usual practice for rail wagon design, both freight and passengers are presented. A discussion on rail and the environment comes next followed by Truck-Trains. Accident theories, metaphors and investigation methods are widely discussed; Hazard – Barrier – Target Model, Swiss Cheese Model, Bow-Tie Model, Fault Tree Analysis and Event Tree Analysis are explained. This paper concludes with a technical discussion on safety and security of rail vehicles, standards for safety and measures against terrorist attacks.

More specifically the study presented consists of two surveys, as follows. The first survey, Supply Survey, explores existing transport and logistics-related courses and educational programmes offered in higher education institutions. The second survey, Demand Survey, examines demands for rail logistics higher education and aims to understand the current needs for higher education in the sector. This paper shows that a spectrum of rail, freight transport and logistics related courses and programmes exist, however there is a strong need for a more specific training and education offering operations management skills needed to improve the company performance, efficiency and quality of service provided.
