The fifteen designs introduced in this essay, all dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries, are concerned with urban decoration. Some are of world-renowned works – the Spanish steps, the decoration of the Trevi fountain and the Piazza del Quirinale – while others are rare projects dealing with unexecuted ideas by little known, or completely unknown architects or artists. The discussion of the subjects offered by these drawings – the embellishment of the city and the creation of its urban spaces – provides an historical analysis in order to understand the reasons behind the interventions represented by each sheet.

The aim is to experiment and develop, within a digital platform, the methodology for archiving and systematization of archival sources documenting historical consistency of important Roman factories, included in urban museum paths, in order to highlight their role of cultural and tourism attractors. The historical-critical description of these architectures, drawn up on an archival basis, represents a fundamental moment for the identification and transmission of immaterial, cultural, historical-artistic and anthropological values, of which the material history of architecture is an expression. The final result consists in the organization of a documentary repertoire, written in the form of a manual synthesis about the pre-modern constructive lexicon and referring to a geo-referenced cartography; the repository of cards, consistent in the nomenclature to the standard encodings used by the ICCD, composes the vectorized informative apparatus of the digital platform, functional to the story telling that completes the ICT layout of urban museum itineraries.

During the twentieth century, these components have often been replaced because considered inadequate compared to current efficiency standards: but for them conservation is necessary to contribute with philological matrix restoration interventions, as material witnesses of an otherwise intelligible intangible culture.
The case study concerns the wooden framework and the clipeo created at the end of the XVII century to support and protect the painting by Andrea Pozzo in the church of Sant’Ignazio in Rome. A unique structure in articulation, dimensions and functionality. Despite this, and although deemed to be in good conditions, in 1962 those responsible for the intervention replaced it with a metal framework system that would have solved the question of handling the great painting for maintenance.
In relation to the hypothesis of maintaining the structure nowadays, an investigation has been led on the philological redefinition of the artifact and the reconstruction of its architecture and technology, critically explaining the process of its conception and reorganization. Eventually, the assessment of efficiency evaluating the application of carbon nanotube’s (CNTs) technology has been made, in advantage for the optimization of connections. By a FEM software, the contribution of the technological device has been quantitatively evaluated and validate in terms of resistance.
