Research paper thumbnail of Some Middle Arabic Traits in 17th-Century Jerusalem Sharia Court Records’ Legal Documents Involving the Custody of the Holy Land

JSAI, 2024

This case study is centred on the 17th-century Jerusalem Sharia Court Records (henceforth JSCRs) ... more This case study is centred on the 17th-century Jerusalem Sharia Court Records (henceforth JSCRs) and scrutinises the linguistic intricacies within the legal documents associated with the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land during the Ottoman era. The study notably highlights the dearth of dedicated research on Middle Arabic (henceforth MA) within the Ottoman period, with the seminal work of Lentin (1997) standing as a noteworthy exception. Furthermore, it underscores the limited scholarly attention, with the recent contributions by Wagner (2021) and Zack (2022) representing a promising addition to the scholarly discourse.
The central focus lies in elucidating the manifestation of MA features within legal texts, notably exemplified in documents like JSCRs. Moreover, the study undertakes an investigation into the redaction process of the ḥuğğa deeds, accentuating the significance of their intricate revision in discerning the extent of textual corrections within these documents.
The research examines 100 ḥuğğa deeds, employing the scholarly framework posited by Den Heijer (2012). Utilising Lentin’s methodology (1997), the present study draws upon diverse linguistic traits across various domains, analysing and classifying them. The investigation aims to establish a comprehensive understanding of the MA features intricately woven into these texts.
By shedding light on the linguistic and cultural nuances embedded within the JSCRs, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the Ottoman-era sociolinguistic context. The findings have broader implications for the study of linguistic volution and the socio-historical dynamics prevalent in the Ottoman Bilād al-Šām.

the composition of his Turoṣ mamlo suryoyo, an innovative Syriac
grammar seeming to introduce, among other interesting peculiarities, a
new, simplified orthographic system: «novis(que) litteris vocalibus loco
punctorum in corpore, ad faciliorem syriacae linguae lectionem, animata».
However, Assemani’s orthographic system is also found in a manuscript
written two months earlier by the Maronite Ğibrāʼīl Ḥawwā (d. 1752),
Rituale per le Cerimonie della Messa scritte in Lingua Siriaca colla
Rubricella Carsciunica, who further employed his system in the edition of
his Liber Psalmorum Davidis idiomate Syro dated 1737. The question that
naturally emerges is to whom to attribute the paternity of this innovative
orthographic system.
In the same year (1707), the Maronite Ğirmānūs Farḥāt (d. 1732)
successfully produced one of the most simplified and well-organised
grammars of the Arabic language, the Baḥṯ al-maṭālib wa-ḥaṯṯ al-ṭālib.
This paper proposes to investigate both the aims of and the ways of
perceiving grammatical simplification expressed by the two Maronite
authors in their Syriac and Arabic grammar books respectively.

Research paper thumbnail of Franciscans in the Early Modern Ottoman World - EMOS II Conference Panel

Early Modern Ottoman Studies (EMOS) Conference II, Institutions, Networks, and Economic Change in the Early Modern Ottoman World, Istanbul, Sabancı University, 27-28 June, 2024

The objective of this panel is to explore the complexities of the presence of the Franciscan orde... more The objective of this panel is to explore the complexities of the presence of the Franciscan order in the Ottoman Empire during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It will do so by examining the intricate functioning of the economic, legal, and spiritual networks of two major Franciscan institutions, the Custody of the Holy Land (e. 1342) and the Province of Bosna Argentina (e. 1339), in a trans-Ottoman perspective.
The number of studies on monastic institutions and their role in shaping the social and economic fabric of the early modern Ottoman realm has experienced a surge in the past decades. Although in the field of Ottoman studies, preference has been given to the Orthodox monastic landscape, scholars from related disciplines have been devoting more and more attention to the study of Catholic religious institutions. Inspired by these trends, this panel brings together four scholars from different academic backgrounds and with interrelated research projects to foster a more comprehensive understanding of how the Franciscan order shaped the Ottoman economic landscape during the Early Modern Period.
The first paper by Dr. Megan C. Armstrong (McMaster University) analyzes the dynamics of alms-collecting and information gathering in the early modern Ottoman Mediterranean through the lens of the mobility, information, and spiritual networks of the Spanish Commissioners of the Holy Land. The second paper by Dr. Felicita Tramontana (Roma Tre University) examines the participation strategies of the Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land in the local economic and financial networks of 17th-century Jerusalem. The third paper by Dr. Manuel Capomaccio (Roma Tre University) investigates the legal and economic aspects of the interaction between the Franciscan friars of the Custody and the Jerusalem Sharia Court during the 17th century. The fourth paper by Dr. Emese Muntán (Austrian Academy of Sciences) examines the role of the provincial Ottoman administration in shaping the dynamics of Franciscan church ownership in seventeenth century Ottoman Slavonia.
Collectively, the papers of this panel draw on a variety of primary sources in different languages, while combining micro-, meso-, and macro-level approaches and integrating historiographically, methodologically, and linguistically fragmented inquiries. In this way, the panel participants hope to contribute in an engaging way to the main theme of the conference and foster further interdisciplinary discussions.
