Our knowledge of the sequence of the individual pieces is very limited because of their almost total dispersion, yet archival documentation provides every detail of their creation. The artists who produced the cartoons for the weavers were Filippo Napoletano and Francesco Mingucci, both in the Barberini entourage. The gaps in the series can be filled in part thanks to the discovey of photographs of the cartoons housed in photo library of the Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell'Arte Roberto Longhi in Florence: these relate to the six main principal tapestries with views of the palaces of Aranjuez, Fontainebleau, Pratolino, Grottaferrata, Castel Gandolfo, and the Riviera of Genoa.
