The results from four letter matching tasks indicate that the effect of grouping depended on the task. Specifically, rhyme matches showed an effect of grouping which was twice as large as that for physical, name, or category matches. It may be that tasks requiring the phonetic coding of information will benefit most from proximity grouping, although tasks requiring visual, visual associative, or categorical coding may also benefit to a lesser degree.

Instead, since 2001, WHO considers handicap as a form of diversity, embedded in a society where anybody is diverse in his/her own way. This change in definition signals a cultural transformation both in the society at large and in its part that is composed by the "handicapped" people. Such a change in the attitudes is rooted in the fact that the assistive technologies let people to overcome limitations and allow to build an intelligent ambient that permits all to exploit their diverse potentialities. In Italy, this process of social change has been accompanied, for more than twenty years, by a Foundation (ASPHI), whose mission has been to favour the education and the inclusion in the labour market of people with disability through the use, at the beginning, of the computer-based, and, then, of the communication technologies. In the following contribution, the main characteristics, and activities, and the evolution processes of ASPHI will be presented, together with the outcomes of a survey on how the process of cultural transformation has taken place. The survey was conducted on a sample of the people that directly (they have attended course in ASPHI) or indirectly (they at least once asked ASPHI for information or help) had to do with 6h9s Foundation. The quantitative and qualitative information show a clear shift in the self-perception of "people with disability" from exclusion to inclusion, from the limitations of the handicap to the value of diversity.

Experience with and reflections on the interaction among the workplace, the society, and various ... more Experience with and reflections on the interaction among the workplace, the society, and various institutions in the area of occupational health have played an important role in the general political debate in Italy since the 1960s. This paper describes the emergence of the workers' model of investigation into health hazards, an element unique to the Italian experience, and analyzes its impact on the organization of work, government policies, health institutions, and scientific research. HISTORICAL SURVEY Following an agreement signed in Rome in 1944 by the three leading anti-Fascist parties-the Italian Communist Party (PCI), the Socialist Party (PSI), and Christian Democracy (DC)-the labor movement was reconstituted as a single great confederation, Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro (CGIL) (1). This origin had strong precedents in the pre-Fascist Italian labor movement, which was characterized by a plurality of trade unions with direct political roots (there were separate Socialist, Anarchist, and Catholic organizations). In the immediate post-World War I1 period, the industrial structure was very weak, existing in only one area of northern Italy, and unemployment was very high. The trade union's political clout was relatively strong, however. Compromised by Fascism and in need of state aid, the employers were in a position of relative weakness. Worker participation in the armed struggle had been impressive, and the political strikes had proven decisive in the battle against Fascism and the German occupation. In the postwar period, the foundations for trade union bargaining were extremely limited and the commitment of left-wing militants was primarily linked to broad political issues. Moreover, the Italian labor movement lacked a genuinely industrial base. (It is no accident that the secretary of the CGIL, the Communist Giuseppe Di Vittorio, was a leader of the farm laborers movement, with roots in a revolutionary trade unionism of Anarchist origin.) An important contribution to the development of an industrial culture in Italian trade unionism was made by the brief, but intense experience of the "works councils" (Consigli di gestione). These bodies were conceived during the Resistance, and even professionals and industrial executives worked with them. These professionals and executives were of varying political extraction and from different formations of the Left, but all were interested in the issue of worker participation in the management of businesses and in industrial and economic planning.
