Research paper thumbnail of Cycle Liquid Desiccant Air Conditioning Systems – Theoretical and Experimental Investigations

Solar assisted air conditioning systems using liquid desiccants represent a promising option to d... more Solar assisted air conditioning systems using liquid desiccants represent a promising option to decrease the high summer energy demand caused by electrically driven vapor compression machines. However, for these systems high efficient and reliable components need to be developed and the design has to be adjusted to each respective building design, location and user demand. The paper presents the design of a prototype for one of the main components of liquid desiccant systems and reports on its experimental performance. A numerical model has been developed for the simulation environment TRNSYS and validated using the experimental data. With this model parametric studies of the component performance have been carried out.

Research paper thumbnail of Summer Thermal Resistance Measurement of Timber Framed Roofing Systems and Benefits of Reflective Paints

An experimental investigation was undertaken in which the thermal resistance, for the heat flow through a timber framed pitched roofing system was measured under outdoor conditions for the summer case. The measured R value of a reflective attic space compared well with published data used in standards. However, with higher R value systems containing bulk insulation within the timber frame, the measured result was approximately half the rated R value. It was concluded that the difference was due to the design and installation defects, which can vary significantly between installation. As a means to mitigate against achieving a low R value the application of reflective paints was investigated. Overall reflective paints can significantly reduce the heat flow in sunny summer conditions. For a charcoal roof, a reflective paint can achieve an effective R value up to 5 m 2 K/W and for a galvanised roof, the effective R value can reach 1 m 2 K/W, under sunny conditions.

Research paper thumbnail of Validation and Comparison of Absorber and Regenerator Models for Liquid Desiccant Air Conditioning Systems

Solar assisted air conditioning systems using liquid desiccants represent a promising option to d... more Solar assisted air conditioning systems using liquid desiccants represent a promising option to decrease high summer energy demand caused by electrically driven vapor compression machines. The main components of liquid desiccant systems are absorbers and regenerators. However, high efficient and validated reliable components are required and the design and operation have to be adjusted to each respective building design, location, and user demand. Simulation tools can help to optimize component and system design. The present paper presents new developed numerical models for absorbers and regenerators, as well as experimental data of a regenerator prototype. The models have been compared with a finite- difference method model as well as experimental data.

This paper investigates the use of phase change materials based on a paraffin wax homogeneously bound within fibreboards for the application of space heating. Results from testing are compared to those from an existing computer model which was developed specifically for phase change materials based on a salt hydrate. The fibreboard is also compared to another commercially available material based on a salt hydrate, which is also being considered for space heating.

The University of South Australia is involved in the development of one such system for a dairy farm. In order to take advantage of the cheap off-peak electricity tariff, the heat pump generates ice in an ice-bank during the night, which is used for milk cooling during the day. The heat released while the ice is being made is used to produce the daily requirements of hot water. The advantages of this system are that both initial capital cost and energy consumption are reduced. The paper describes the operation of this system and presents some results to indicate the system performance and energy cost savings.
