These solutions include adopting digital technologies to provide clearer explanations, standardising nomenclature across disciplines, and promoting the use of clear, unambiguous English for global knowledge communication. Additionally, it is recommended to establish a global consortium that would coordinate/oversee contact with academic institutions, standardisation bodies, industry stakeholders, and digital platforms, as these collaborations will ensure a unified approach to scientific nomenclature. The text advocates for a shift in information technology strategies to tackle ambiguity-related challenges and the necessity of involving organisations like UNESCO, ISO, and the W3C in furthering this initiative. The role of specialised languages as temporary measures is underscored, underlining the paramount objective of formulating a universal nomenclature for science and engineering, as well as other knowledge application domains. The perspective of neuroscience centres on the study of the physical brain and nervous system, se... more The perspective of neuroscience centres on the study of the physical brain and nervous system, seeking chemical, physical, and biological explanations for how neurons and brain structures sense, perceive, understand, remember, feel, and behave. From a neurological standpoint, all mental processes have a biochemical and physical basis. On the other hand, philosophical perspective focuses on the abstract concepts of mind, intentions, intuition, ethics, aesthetics, consciousness, unconscious, and subconscious. Wrestles with how physical matter gives rise to ideas. There are open questions as to whether all subjective mental activity maps neatly onto physical brain states or if there are unbridgeable explanatory gaps. Most take an intermediate compatibilist stance, while some stick firmly to one side. But there remains active discussion around the mind-body problem. In this discourse, one way of travelling along both trajectories has been drafted with an intention to clarify some existing, and open some new, views on the philosophy of knowledge. The aim is to point out the importance of establishing principal definitions and allocating unique terms on a transdisciplinary scale to the basic concepts related to this impressive subject.

Hot rolling is among the most widely used manufacturing techniques. However, rolling mills are ma... more Hot rolling is among the most widely used manufacturing techniques. However, rolling mills are major resource consumers; thus, urgent rationalisation is required in the relevant industrial systems. Roll pass design (RPD) is a principal factor that determines process efficiency, product quality and resource consumption. Therefore, it is important to optimise RPD including the selection of roll materials. New avenues for optimising RPD are to be found by extracting knowledge buried in the vast repository of industrial records. The extracted statistical functions are then used for the non-linear optimisation of RPD parameters. The design of a leading oval groove for rolling a wire rod is presented as an example, along with a discussion of the general mathematical aspects. The presented case analysis shows how regression analysis and the probability density function (PDF) are used to define principal dimensions—height and width—for the leading oval groove. These two dimensions are inferred following the logic of probabilistic design, and are based on an understanding of the trend in groove contour changes, which occur due to surface wear during rolling campaigns.

The opposite of knowledge is an infinitely large, unexplored, undiscovered, unanticipated variety of relations, processes, and something else within and beyond us. The 'ignorance' is misunderstanding of, or otherwise unfamiliarity with already existing knowledge.[1] The knowledge repositories have nowadays outgrown the capacity of the individuals, and even the teams, for maintaining the sufficient comprehension of the totality of knowledge that is in fact available for treating the ongoing issues permeating our existence. In spite of the unprecedented nowadays communication involving the philosophers worldwide, it app... more In spite of the unprecedented nowadays communication involving the philosophers worldwide, it appears that there is still no consensus about the definition of the philosophy. While quite practical extracts addressing that issue can be found in sources such as Wikipedia [and the Free Dictionary, these are somewhat blurred by the differences in the tendencies of different authors to focus on some of themes, while neglecting the others. For example, some authors concentrate on the psychological aspects such as aesthetics and ethics while the others put more emphasis on the nature and the ultimate significance of the universe. Although one can at the intersects of these trends recognise that the philosophers converge to studying of most general and fundamental questions about our relation with the world, a formal widely adopted definition seems to be still missing.

More than 90% of the metallic materials produced are rolled at least once in the course of production [1-4]. This technique is applied to processing polymers, ceramics, and composites as well, although at much lower volumes compared to metallics. This impelled authors to limit the scope of the manual to the rolling of metallics. Further narrowing by excluding the rolling techniques such as flat, ring, screw and tube rolling has brought to the front rolling of long products (termed simply 'rolling' hereafter). The existing quite extensive literature about rolling ranges from the most generic textbooks to the very detailed but narrowly specialised manuscripts. Yet, the majority of published design models do not provide a satisfactory combination of precision and accuracy simply because they fail to include all factors. The proposed design 'rules' and 'laws' are rather declarative, the competing models are not compared, and the explanatory notes are rarely supported by evidence, not to mention statistical measures. A theory does not count as validated unless is successfully used in practice. Until tried in a mill, the design is only a hypothesis. Engineers commence a rolling trial based on that hypothesis and then try to optimise the process by means of educated trials and errors. This approach resulted in the overwhelming majority of the rolling mills operating at a too low level of sustainability [2]. It appears that the existing records and industrial experience have not been utilised sufficiently by the designers and operators. The urgency for rationalizing the rolling operations prompted calls for introducing the Industry 4.0 (I4) into rolling systems and for further research to better understand the process itself. An important aspect of I4 is the implementation of online data acquisition and analyses, which has become feasible due to the advances in IT. Models for useful digitization of rolling passes can be merged with a globally structured database, analyses of which are deemed to uncover patterns, trends, and correlations buried in the growing treasures of industrial records. Combining these statistical inferences with technological and scientific models will allow for optimising the rolling operations online as the process factors fluctuate. The major focus in this publication is on roll pass design, (RPD) an engineering specialty that is nested in the heart of rolling technology. An advantage of growing knowledge treasure is utilised in the form of a new comprehensive network of hyperlinks. Yet, the very core of this publication is, in fact, an algorithm that leads directly to step-by-step instructions on how to specify roll pass design for manufacturing a particular product. For the rolling process design purpose, there is a need for creating a practical guide that will introduce the design steps not blurred by dispersion into depths of theoretical and complementary scientific derivations, nor too narrowed to hopelessly isolated issues. On the other hand, the importance of that in-depth understanding of any of the involved aspects cannot be ignored. A resolve to this dichotomy is made available due to the advances in information technology. Not only that a wide range of background theories has become accessible, but also the whole network can be interconnected in a structure of the nodes hyperlinks of which can be accessed as per the choice of users. This approach resulted in abandoning the traditional textbook structure where each subsequent section presents a logical development for which the previous chapters provide the base. Rather a series of practical RPD solutions are presented to lead the users to a competent understanding of interacting aspects, while enabling direct progress towards addressing a problem of interest. The underlying knowledge is referred to via hyperlinks that cover numerous terms and concepts to allow for easy navigating to the theme of immediate interest.

Yet, Men have repeatedly succeeded in extracting the “laws of nature” classified within a number of scientific disciplines. There is no problem with making the decisions in accordance with these “laws” whenever the targets were met repeatedly and within the acceptable tolerances. The problem appears when in the search for possible solutions, an option is aborted because of an apparent conflict with some ‘well established’ natural “law”. Author hopes that this essay will not be seen as a repudiation of sciences. On the contrary, the intention is to inspire and encourage those who look for means of better understanding and controlling our future by means of scientific research.

This segment of the curriculum provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to apply and extend their skills and knowledge. It provides students with an opportunity to undertake an extensive independent exploration of a particular topic. In addition to applying the skills that are developed in the undergraduate courses, students will develop skills in research, project management and technical communication. The contemporary availability of advanced computerised platforms allows students to experience the comparative analysis of viable solutions in engineering design. PURPOSE OR GOAL This paper presents a pilot study on a new approach to final year projects based on the 'total design approach'. This new approach hypothesises that analytical thinking and creativity is enhanced by a holistic approach to engineering design. This paper investigates the enhancements in the learning experience and graduate qualities of students once they are introduced to this new approach. APPROACH The main methodology used for data collection was a quiz that was undertaken by different cohorts of final year mechanical engineering students. In addition, observations were recorded by instructors, and selective interviews enabled deeper investigation of the most characteristic inferences. ACTUAL OR ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES The outcome of this study showed that enhancement in graduate qualities was acknowledged by students who were introduced to this new approach. This was measured by responses across different cohorts of students. CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS/SUMMARY This study concludes that this new approach to final year projects should be implemented as it promotes quality learning experiences and improves the engineering qualities of students.

Globalisation favours cross-disciplinary and transparent communication. However, these trends have uncovered impedances such as prolixity, ambiguity and jargon. Internet enables communication with the speed of light, thus exposing other limits to knowledge transfer, such as misinformation and misunderstanding. Knowledge is transferred by interaction of language with other models (e.g. figures) and by demonstrations. Transparency of terminology is critical for knowledge management. This treatise presents an axiomatic definition of the term 'definition' itself, in order to enable a rational analysis of lexical elements - the words. The examples of confusing terms (homonyms, synonyms) are discussed. A trend of using inter-disciplinary and transparent lexicon is proposed, with adopting a hierarchy of terms that allocates the priority to fundamental disciplines (mathematics, physics). Scientific lexicon should attribute to each definition a unique set of words. The need to expunge scientific and technical language of ambiguity is urgent and the comprehensive review and “cleaning” of scientific terms is a task that demands the gathering together of appropriate institutions. The key to disambiguation of scientific language is in defining quantifiable criteria.

It is therefore important to analyse hindrances that slow or even prevent the growth, communication and use of knowledge. This treatise hypothesises that the differences in interpretations of some basic epistemological, ontological and didactic concepts significantly contribute to the ambiguities and other impediments in knowledge processing. Examples of such misconceptions are presented and a mitigation strategy discussed. Interaction between computerised media and humans such as the rise of the open sources of knowledge and the participatory Web uncover new gates for cross-disciplinary sharing and application of knowledge.

For the rolling process design purpose, there is a need for creating a practical guide that will introduce the design steps not blurred by dispersion into depths of theoretical and complementary scientific derivations, nor too narrowed to hopelessly isolated issues. On the other hand, the importance of that in-depth understanding of any of the involved aspects cannot be ignored. A resolve to this dichotomy is made available due to the advances in information technology. Not only that a wide range of background theories has become accessible, but also the whole network can be interconnected in a structure of the nodes hyperlinks of which can be accessed as per the choice of users. This approach resulted in abandoning the traditional textbook structure where each subsequent section presents a logical development for which the previous chapters provide the base. Rather a series of practical RPD solutions are presented to lead the users to a competent understanding of interacting aspects, while enabling direct progress towards addressing a problem of interest. This segment of the curriculum provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to apply and extend their skills and knowledge. It provides students with an opportunity to undertake an extensive independent exploration of a particular topic. In addition to applying the skills that are developed in the undergraduate courses, students will develop skills in research, project management and technical communication. The contemporary availability of advanced computerised platforms allows students to experience the comparative analysis of viable solutions in engineering design. PURPOSE OR GOAL This paper presents a pilot study on a new approach to final year projects based on the 'total design approach'. This new approach hypothesises that analytical thinking and creativity is enhanced by a holistic approach to engineering design. This paper investigates the enhancements in the learning experience and graduate qualities of students once they are introduced to this new approach. APPROACH The main methodology used for data collection was a quiz that was undertaken by different cohorts of final year mechanical engineering students. In addition, observations were recorded by instructors, and selective interviews enabled deeper investigation of the most characteristic inferences. ACTUAL OR ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES The outcome of this study showed that enhancement in graduate qualities was acknowledged by students who were introduced to this new approach. This was measured by responses across different cohorts of students. CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS/SUMMARY This study concludes that this new approach to final year projects should be implemented as it promotes quality learning experiences and improves the engineering qualities of students.

Globalisation favours cross-disciplinary and transparent communication. However, these trends have uncovered impedances such as prolixity, ambiguity and jargon. Internet enables communication with the speed of light, thus exposing other limits to knowledge transfer, such as misinformation and misunderstanding. Knowledge is transferred by interaction of language with other models (e.g. figures) and by demonstrations. Transparency of terminology is critical for knowledge management. This treatise presents an axiomatic definition of the term 'definition' itself, in order to enable a rational analysis of lexical elements - the words. The examples of confusing terms (homonyms, synonyms) are discussed. A trend of using inter-disciplinary and transparent lexicon is proposed, with adopting a hierarchy of terms that allocates the priority to fundamental disciplines (mathematics, physics). Scientific lexicon should attribute to each definition a unique set of words. The need to expunge scientific and technical language of ambiguity is urgent and the comprehensive review and “cleaning” of scientific terms is a task that demands the gathering together of appropriate institutions. However, this endeavour and its fruits can be adversely affected if the misaligned and otherwise ambiguous concepts and their names are built in.
The introductory chapter, which outlines the general features of ambiguity issues, is followed by a chapter delving into the foundational aspects of 'knowledge.' Establishing a strategy for disambiguation hinges on first defining the fundamental concepts of understanding. This involves analysing and elucidating the knowledge structure. Subsequent chapters offer a compilation of chosen ambiguous concepts, coupled with illustrations demonstrating how these uncertainties can be resolved. It is anticipated that presenting such compilations will raise awareness regarding the severity of ambiguity issues and encourage the adoption of transparent methods for presenting knowledge.
The intended audience for this book includes students, teachers, and researchers as well as the editors of educational, scientific, engineering, and medical publications.
