It includes a look at elements of the Australian Communities for Children initiative, using a collaborative approach that takes into account community, government and family. How can the voices of children be heard in decision-making processes that impact their futures? How can digital media be used to support, educate and protect children living in an online world? What does it mean to use a whole of community approach to supporting families? How can government departments and non-government agencies work together with communities to provide the kind of support that effectively engages families, so that the quality of parenting improves? What strategies can be developed in early childhood and school settings to improve family functioning? How can fragmented services become more integrated? While these are undoubtedly diverse questions, this kind of holistic viewpoint is nee...

Their receptive young minds are formed and their physical skills are developed as they begin to explore the world around them. They learn how to get along with others as they develop social skills and learn how to handle their emotions. What impact is using digital technology having on how children are developing? Is it harming them or is it helping them? What role do parents and caregivers have in all this? These are some of the questions this e-book sets out to answer. Some of our best minds contribute important ideas on what parents, educators and caregivers need to know about the impact of electronic media on our children’s development. More importantly they offer us guidance on what we can do to avoid the pitfalls and make use of the ways digital technology can enhance children’s learning.

In order to upgrade the qualifications of staff, a number of Australian universities provide pathways that enable graduates of early childhood diploma programs to complete a degree. Several impediments, including institutional structures and individual contextual and personal factors, may affect these pathways. Although a range of organisations offer diploma programs, TAFE (Tertiary and Further Education) is a major provider. The aim of the present study was to investigate student transition between early childhood programs in TAFE and university. The research drew on several data sources, including a survey of the perceptions of students at various points of undertaking the transition. The current credit arrangement for TAFE Diploma graduates was found to be satisfac...

Children are increasingly spending time in settings with peers, for example, long‐day care, out‐of‐school‐hours care and occasional care, as well as preschools and junior primary schools. Existing frameworks for understanding peer relations include ethological, critical and sociometric approaches. All share a common, and as yet unrecognised element, that of interpersonal power. In this paper it is argued that research into the power relations between young children has the potential to provide new insight into children's relations with their peers. It is argued that without such insight, understanding of those relations can only be partial. Seven key themes for the analysis of interpersonal power in children's peer relations from a previous study are discussed and recommendations made about how the study of young children's relations with their peers might be conducted.
