Up until the 1950’s, particularly in North America, psychoanalysis and behaviourism dominated the psychological approaches employed by psychologists and psychiatrists (Glassman & Hadah, 2009). Many people felt that these paradigms ignored the deep feelings that they had – that they were much more than programmed creatures, slaves to conditioned responses and behaviour over which they had no control and of which they were supposedly not even always consciously aware. Rather, most people firmly believed “that they were unique, thinking, feeling, hoping, dreaming, planning, growing beings that were special in their own unique ways” (Glassman & Hadah, 2009).

This response to a question I posted relating to the topic of capital punishment is not an uncommonly harboured sentiment in South Africa. I nodded in silent agreement with an Alaskan respondent's statement that, plainly, this issue is "far too broad for an up or down vote." I have scrutinised both local as well as foreign sources seeking enlightenment on this sensitive subject. Opinions -personal, professional or otherwise -cover a broad spectrum of beliefs, emotions, morals and ethics. My conclusions are based upon a critical assessment of personal and public opinions, as well as upon factual information. Namely, that within our modern, civilized society the notion that capital punishment is either an effective deterrent or an appropriate form of punishment is incongruous, distorted and irreconcilable.
