From 1988 to 1992 he was a graduate student at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Siena, and received a Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences with honours in July 1993. During his doctoral studies he spent a semester (14/1-22/3/1991) at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Leeds (U.K.).

From 1989 to 1995 he was post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Siena, where he was involved in the preparation and lecturing of the Tettonics, Geology I, Geology II and Physical Geography classes.

In 1995 he achieved a post-doctoral N.A.TO.-C.N.R. Advanced Fellowship and spent 11 months at the Department of Geology and Geophysics of the University of California at Berkeley (U.S.A.).

In 1996 he was appointed in the Italian Academic System as Researcher. From 1996 to 2001 he was Researcher in Structural Geology at the University of Basilicata in Potenza, Italy. From 1996 to 2001 he carried out his academic activities at the Department of Geological Sciences of the University of Basilicata. He lectured the Field Mapping class, and was involved in preparation of the Geology II and Structural Geology classes.
