Doctor Michelangelo Tilli across the Ottoman Empire (1683-85) Abstract The article is based on the correspondence between doctor Michelangelo Tilli, the secretary of Granduke Cosimo III de’Medici in Florence and doctor Francesco Redi head physician at the Medici Court and a leading scientist in Europe. Michelangelo Tilli (1655-1750) a young physician graduated from the university of Pisa, between 1683 and 1685 travelled to the Ottoman Empire with the official charge of treating Mustafa pasha “Mussaip”, grand admiral of the Turkish fleet and son in law of Sultan Mehmed IV. It was a relevant diplomatic and political move to send a promising physician to treat the Pasha during the crucial military campaign of the Turks in Central Europe against the Holy League while Christian armies were confronting the last Ottoman attack to Vienna and Hungary. From Istanbul Tilli travelled to Belgrade and back, while the Ottomans were at war with the Ha...

Costume Books, Maps and Clothing between Europe and Japan (XVI-XVIII) The article focuses on the transformation of spatial culture in early modern European societies and Tokugawa Japan, where parallel processes were spurred by print technology and a rapidly evolving textual and visual vocabulary of space. It analyses cartography and costume books from Italy and Japan: Cesare Vecellio’s two editions of Degli Habiti antichi e moderni di diverse parti del mondo (1590) and the Habiti antichi e moderni di tutto il mondo (1598) and two editions of a costume book printed in Japan: the Mankoku jinbutsushu (The people of the 42 countries) by Nishikawa Joken printed in 1720, and its revised edition (Teisei shijunikoku Jinbutsuzusetsu) by Yamamura Seisuke printed in 1801. All these books display texts and images of dressed men and women in the four continents of the known world. This transcontinental c...

This article analyzes, discusses, and connects three different sources: Ignatius Mouradgea d’Ohsson’s Tableau général de l’Empire Ottoman (1787–1820), Giulio Ferrario’s Il costume antico e moderno (1817–1834) and Carolina Lattanzi’s Il Corriere delle Dame(1804–1874). The texts shed light on the fashion for cashmere shawls and cashmere cloth imported from India to the Ottoman Empire and Europe in the Napoleonic era. They also outline the crucial role of translation from Turkish to French and Italian as well as the role of dragomans, printers, engravers and editors in spreading the culture of fashion.

This broader picture of court politics and diplomatic networks -which also relied on familial and kin ties -provides a way of studying the political role of women in early modern Europe. This role has to be studied taking into account the overlapping of familial and political concerns, where the intersection of women as mediators and coordinators of extended networks is a central feature of European societies.
