Research paper thumbnail of Infectious diseases epidemic threats and mass gatherings: refocusing global attention on the continuing spread of the Middle East Respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV)

Mass gatherings such as the annual Hajj pilgrimage hosted by Kingdom of Saudi Arabia attract huge crowds from all continents, creating high-risk conditions for the rapid global spread of infectious diseases. The highly lethal Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) remains in the WHO list of top emerging diseases likely to cause major epidemics. The 2015 MERS-CoV outbreak in South Korea, in which 184 MERS cases including 33 deaths occurred in 2 months, that was imported from the Middle East by a South Korean businessman was a wake-up call for the global community to refocus attention on MERS-CoV and other emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases with epidemic potential. The international donor community and Middle Eastern countries should make available resources for, and make a serious commitment to, taking forward a "One Health" global network for proactive surveillance, rapid detection, and prevention of MERS-CoV and other epidemic infectious diseases threats.

The study found out that, the veto power doctrine of the UNSC has limited its capacity to intervene, states are framing new terms to justify their violations of the international laws for example terms such as military operation, collateral damage amongst others. The study also, find out that, terms such as pre-emptive strike are easily manipulated where a country can pro-actively attack another country in self-defence. The study projected WW111, resource and history-based wars, recolonisation of the former colonies through direct military actions, rethinking of the efficacy of the UNSC amongst other. The study recommends, nonmilitary solutions because the situation is likely to turn into a WW111 with devastating economies consequences as countries are battling to recover from the effects of COVID 19. Non rational decision will trigger popular revolts globally due to rise in gas and fuel prices on the global market.

The study looked at various framing and diverging interpretations of Zuma’s case by the various sections of South Africa. Some sections of the society especially the Zulus and Malema believed that, Zuma’s case is a continuation of apartheid politics and is targeted at the Zulu tribe who were the most vocal during war against Apartheid. From the perspective of the principle of the rule of law the law was applied without fear or favour. The information which is being generated through the use of social media is now allowing researchers to measure empirically harm associated with hate speech, political lies, etc thereby assisting in developing results evidence based policies using different approaches such as discrete analytical stages [Howard 2019], debate analysis [Wilson et al 2021], sentiment analysis using machine learning [Vrysis et al 2021], etc. However, there still exist a gap in literature and knowledge in context of Zimbabwe. This study perhaps has break ground by tacking the issue of political language use by both the state and social media users thereby extending the frontiers of knowledge and impactful research. This study is a qualitative research which seeks to provide knowledge to the academia, policymakers and Zimbabwean citizens on how the state and social media are being used by disgruntled citizens and political actors to peddle hate speech, political lies, political fraud, un-ethical and unbalanced political media reportage in Zimbabwe by answering the questions such as what is the efficacy of political language use in Zimbabwe? Are there any evidences of the challenges being faced by the failure to use politically neutral and blind language? Is there any role played by social and state media, both positive and negatives as a result of political language use? Are there any recommendations appropriate for crisis communication strategy for improved language use in politics? Interviews and document exploitation were mainly used as data gathering techniques and results were analysed using the thematic content analysis method. The study confirms that, state and social media are being used by disgruntled citizens and political actors to peddle hate speech, political lies, political fraud, un-ethical and unbalanced media reportage in Zimbabwe. Since 1890 when Zimbabwe was colonised, citizens have been subjects of state brutality and hate political language.

This journal used a desktop research to link Lenin-Marxism to the concept of human security in Zimbabwe. The study found out that in Zimbabwe there are class struggles and that Zimbabwe emphasises more on politics than economics. This has resulted in human insecurities and civil disobedience. The view by Lenin that, trade unions are party of the bourgeois than on the side of the proletariats, in cases such as Zimbabwe was found to be true. The is leaders of trade unions in Zimbabwe are in the bourgeois class they live affluent lifestyle. The two philosophers Lenin and Marx were right in that, different situations requires different approach, the 2017 military intervention cannot be repeated using same template and todate the same military is thwarting any forms of civil disobedience. The current wave of #Hashtags in Zimbabwe are as a result of both human security concerns and Lenin-Marxism philosophy that repression is systemic and is mitigated through removing the oppressive system. Marxist was able to explain hegemonic tendencies by capitalists to developing countries when he talked about, imperialism as the highest stage of capitalism. Imperialism by IMF, World Bank and other inter-governmental agencies is Africa’s greatest hurdle.
