SIGGRAPH '94 Proceedings of the 21st annual conference on Computer graphics and interactive techniques, 1994

graphics techniques for design communication and visualization in the Architecture, Engineering, ... more graphics techniques for design communication and visualization in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) and related design industries. Since there is a great deal of interesting and innovative work being done outside the United States in the area (and with relatively little U.S. exposure), this panel is focused on a few of these international efforts. Architecture is but a small subset of the much larger field of design, and the trends and work being done are in many ways representative of the broader domain. Despite the formal training of all of the panelists in architectural design and the focus of the discussion upon architecture and engineering, the panel should be of interest and value to educators, researchers, software developers, and marketers in the AEC field and those interested in practical and innovative uses of computer graphics presentation techniques outside the U.S. For years computer-aided design, or “CAD” has been the primary focus of computerization efforts (and funding) among design firms throughout the world. Recently however, as computer graphic visualization and presentation tools have matured, there has been a growing trend to utilize the computer as more than just a drafting tool. Thus, the panel presentations and discussion will steer away from traditional CAD and focus in on rendering, animation, and multimedia in the AEC field. Each panelist will briefly present the current state-of-the-art in their respective country and area and their vision for where their respective fields are heading. The presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion (and opportunity for audience participation) of how the usage in each region and field parallels or perhaps differs from work in the United States. The panelists come from a broad slice of the world market. Representing a large AEC firm, a small multimedia house, an architectural presentation service bureau, and research and education, they bring multiple viewpoints, cultures, and perspectives to the discussion. Although each is involved with innovative or unique presentation and visualization work, it is valuable to note that each is also interested and involved with research focusing on moving computer usage in the design profession beyond mere presentation graphics.

In collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage Center and numerous local, regional, and national agencies, a multi-university team explored the use of accessible and inexpensive digital media for the documentation, narration, and communication of "cultural landscapes" during a short, focused workshop in the summer of 2000. The workshop model offers an inexpensive vehicle for cultural and natural site managers across the globe to utilize digital media in the management, recording, and dissemination of heritage to officials, professionals, and the general public.

Although the contents of the document vividly present many traits of the city's XIV century's life, the original form in which it came to us-in Latin and vernacular Sardinian-make it very inaccessible to the general public. In the 700's anniversary of the Statuti the local Historic Archives started a vast dissemination project involving us on the grounds of our expertise in communication design. Over the following year our research unit was engaged in the production of an experimental informative platform in which various artifacts-three animated short films, an illustrated booklet, and a website, among the others-explore ways to enhance the degree of accessibility of such an important historical account to the general public. A key step along this process was the understanding that as different users have varying abilities in processing the available information, to provide actual access to it implies varying degrees of interpretation of the text per se, which clearly raises questions of historical accuracy. This brought to the development of a model in which a series of artifacts based on various degrees of 'proximity'-and therefore of interpretation-to the original text, can represent different access points for the understanding of an otherwise very inaccessible text.

This article, by presenting the unfolding scenario, aims at highlighting the foundational nature of the hybrid language that is taking shape around this new trend, underlining how the original combination of elements coming from different fields: animation, graphic design and visual communication, typography, infographics and motion graphics, is today offering us an extraordinary communicative palette. In order to do so, the article discusses specific aspects of this new area of study that make it unique and worthy of further investigation. The article discusses the theme through a short historical perspective and the analysis of a selected group of case studies. Finally,...

Because of the enormity of the designated site, the newness of UNESCO’s ‘cultural landscape’ classification, and concerns about nuclear power generation along the river, this nomination stalled in the international committee. French officials turned to digital media as a way of explaining the merits of their nomination, and as an aid for coordinating multiple agencies’ efforts in plans for the region’s future.

Our region presents in fact a set of conditions that, we believe, can make it a working laboratory for exploring new development models, investigating the power of design and innovation to combine local identity and knowledge, contemporary needs and sustainability. A complex layering of specific historical and geographical facts have contributed to giving shape in Sardinia to a context which is quite unique in the whole of Europe. Over the last few years, this lead us to develop 'Neo-Local design', a concept about exploring ways to combine the potential of design as an innovation force with the values and skills of the local dimension. Through the discussion of some experimental projects we have carried out recently in our Design School, we wish to present our very specific point of view within a broader emerging debate. The paper will focus on new ways to interpret elements such as local knowledge and culture that we though were lost by the effects of the simplification of modernism in the first place and, more recently, by the homogenization of globalization, and that are instead making today place for themselves as valuable agents in the rethinking of the contribution of design to our society.
