Firstly, we will start by addressing the study suggesting that it was Le Brun’s drawing dating from before 1660, that inspired the first and some of the later designs of the façade. Secondly, we will review Bernini’s sojourn in Paris in the summer of 1665 and his four designs none of which were accepted by the King. And finally, the paper will discuss the two designs produced by the petit conseil in 1667, one of which would become the final design or the colonnade and would leave the controversial question of the real authorship.

Such a perception of the city’s identity comes from the poor living conditions of their inhabitants at that time, especially in the city's most ancient cave habitations of the Sassi (literally “the stones”). Nevertheless, what was then considered to be Italy’s national disgrace is now known as the European Capital of Culture 2019 which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. What is striking in Matera’s history is the rapidity in which Matera emerged from being a ‘backward’ and ‘primitive’ city to becoming one of Italy’s finest tourist destinations known for its stark beauty. The purpose of the present contribution is to try and analyze the factors that lead to a major shift in Matera’s status.

He left the country as a result of 2012 Georgian parliamentary elections when he had to concede his party’s (United National Movement) loss in favour of the opposition party (Georgian Dream) which won a majority of seats with the leadership of billionaire businessman Bidzina Ivanishvili. His recent comeback in 2021 was directly related to the October 2 nationwide municipal elections in Georgia which he pinned all his hopes on as he believed that with these elections Georgian people would end the governance of the Georgian Dream. However, the elections did not go the way he expected. Georgian Dream stayed in power which left Saakashvili vulnerable, and thus resulted in his arrest on October 1. In this paper we scrutinise the developments of Saakashvili’s case starting from his early detention days and mistreatment against him until the Court’s decision to provide him with adequate medical care. In doing so, the paper puts an emphasis on the role of various monitoring bodies and, most particularly, the European Court of Human Rights.

The post-war period in France saw the revival of neo-fascist movements that became legitimized due to poorly directed épuration (purification) and light sentences imposed on former Vichy officials. The paper analyzes several ideological families of the radical right in the period between the French Liberation in 1944 and the foundation of the National Front (NF). These include, firstly, the neo-Petainists who were defending the memory of Marshal Petain and gave a rise to marechalism; secondly, the neo-Nazis who were active in creating international links all along with the negationists who were famous for their Holocaust denial; and, finally, the little-studied category of the Catholic integrist and regionalist groups driven by nationalistic sentiments.

T... more Enlargement of the European Union has long been characterized by its alleged regional approach. That is to say, at each enlargement phase the EU brought into the union the countries forming a particular region, rather than single countries (with the exception of Greece and Croatia). Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Georgia continues to remain its place in the EU enlargement discourse as part of the South Caucasus. However, the region is quite complex and all three countries seem to be moving apart into different directions. While Azerbaijan is regarded as authoritarian in the West and Armenia is adhering to some type of Russification, Georgia seeks to maintain its commitment towards EU integration. Therefore, the article suggests a rather alternative approach under which Georgia is no longer viewed in the context of the South Caucasus, but instead, it climbs on the bandwagon with more successful players of the Eastern Partnership, such as Ukraine and Moldova.
