The struggle to understand national identity due to its complexities, most of the time was generated by the socio-political condition. Malaysia, in particular, experiences countless socio-political provocations involving every interrelated difference embodied within the societal fragments. In this context, this study argues that the construction of national identity should be based on universal values that are worth for all people. In line with this argumentation, this study attempts to elaborate the extend of tolerance according to Al-Shahrastānī's proposition implicitly expressed in al-Milal wa al-Nihal in complementing the national identity construction as a practical mechanism without jeopardizing societal ethnicity, nationality, and religiosity. This paper used the qualitative approach which included extensive reviews on literatures and observations. The finding shows that Al-Shahrastānī's propositional attitude towards diversity is objective yet still managed to maintain his identity without unnecessary intimidation and provocations which proving the relevant of its undertaking in Malaysia's context.

It could either unite a society particularly of those that come from various backgrounds of races, cultures and religions or it could create disjunction among them. The situation is mainly caused by a lack of awareness among the society on values such as acceptance and tolerance. Tolerance includes respecting the opinions or thoughts of others as well as helping each other or living side by side regardless of ethnicity, race, religion, and between groups. History shows that tolerance existed and is embodied in many successful nations that live harmoniously despite the differences. This article is to significantly address religious tolerance in history and the development of religious tolerance in Malaysia in order to better understand and improve the current condition of society to live harmoniously despite the differences. The methodology adopted for this article is the qualitative approach which included content analysis, observation as well as particular interviews with prominent academic as well as religious activists who represented different higher education institutions and religious organizations. It needs to be nurtured and educated in the community, especially among youth at the university level. This is due to the fact that they are the ones who will inherit the country's leadership in the future. This study aims to look at the framework of interfaith interaction that can be embedded among the students in the Department of Usuluddin at the Faculty of Islamic Contemporary Studies (FKI), Sultan Zainal Abidin University (UniSZA). This study uses a document analysis method on two documents which are pro forma of comparative religion course and scholarly exercises written by students. This study found that comparative religion course contains values of interfaith interaction emphasized in the pro forma of this course especially in the third learning outcome (CLO3). This element is applied through one-course evaluation, which is a presentation assignment and two off-campus activities, which are a visit to the house of worship and scholarly writing training. Through these three activities, the framework for interfaith interaction can be developed among Muslim and non-Muslim students through the Comparative Religion course offered by the Department of Usuluddin, FKI, UniSZA.
