L' opera di CarI Schmitt (1888-1985) rappresenta una delle più forti provocazioni del pensiero del Novecento. La sua ricerca intellettuale e politica spazia nei diversi ambiti del diritto costituzionale e internazionale, della filosofia e della scienza della politica, della storia delle istituzioni, della letteratura e della teologia e si intreccia singolarmente con le vicende più drammatiche della storia contemporanea, in particolare
con la fine della repubblica di Weimar e con i primi anni del regime nazista, che lo vedono coinvolto in ruoli di primo piano. Il suo pensiero, riscoperto in questi ultimi anni, si trova oggi al centro di un serrato dibattito e di accese controversie.
Una delle provocazioni più significative di Schmitt è quella legata alla sua interpretazione del concetto di "teologia politica", un concetto destinato, pur con diverse interpretazioni, ad avere notevole fortuna nel pensiero teologico del '900, tanto da essere ancora oggi al centro dell'attenzione. Questo volume ricostruisce analiticamente, a partire dai primi
scritti fino alle ultime elaborazioni, la genesi, lo sviluppo e le applicazioni del concetto di "teologia politica" collocandolo sullo sfondo della sua ricerca e analizzando le reazioni e le critiche suscitate negli ambienti filosofici e teologici. Dall'angolo visuale della "teologia politica" l'intera opera schmittiana riceve una nuova e suggestiva luce e assume in certo senso valore di simbolo dell'itinerario della riflessione contemporanea sul politico, sul potere e sul suo ineliminabile riferimento alla trascendenza.

According to Böckenförde’s interpretation in his famous essay “The Rise of the State as a Process... more According to Böckenförde’s interpretation in his famous essay “The Rise of the State as a Process of Secularization” (1967), in the formation of modern statehood religious freedom and, more generally, freedom of conscience played a central role. It was “for love of such freedom” that the modern state set inviolable limits on the exercise of its own coercive force vis-à-vis citizens relying on its protection. Nobody may be forced through the coercive tools of political power to hold true something that they do not believe. This dynamic of freedom is further taken up in Böckenförde’s analysis of church history and theological traditions, as this essay demonstrates. Starting from a critical examination of the nexus between fear and politics, this article identif... more Starting from a critical examination of the nexus between fear and politics, this article identifies the fear of self-dispossession as a feature common to contemporary societies. Within this context, the author maintains that an important role can be played by a vigorous reproposal of the principle of ‘self-belonging’, understood as, on the one hand, the aspiration that one’s dignity be respected, and, on the other, that the irreducibility and inviolability of the Self be recognised. This principle can serve as the foundation for not only an existential perspective of the liberty and relationality of the individual, but also a vision of society based upon respect for basic universal rights and a democratic practice which extends from the local to the global level. Carl Schmitt’s thought on international relations appears from the outset to be profoundly inform... more Carl Schmitt’s thought on international relations appears from the outset to be profoundly informed by his reflections on the philosophy of history. In this the German jurist seems to be fully consonant with the climate of his time, of that generation which saw the 19th century ‘concert of Europe’ crumble beneath their feet into the great tragedy of European civil war which began with the First World War. The collapse of the world order thus almost inevitably leads him to question the meaning of history and to be influenced by the ideas of the end of the world and of history, and by the symbols and metaphors connected to this theme, which have been part of Western culture for centuries.

The issue investigates the history of the concept of redemption. Special attention is paid to the close relationship between the Christian theological interpretation of Jesus’ salvific action, on the one hand, and the practical and theoretical tradition of the delivery of prisoners or debtors, which is crystallised in the juridical institution of the redemptio, on the other. Such a relationship sheds light on the history of the concept and helps to better grasp its wide, nuanced spectrum, which – far from focussing on a momentous event – seems to cover a complex network of theological, social, political and economic relations. The use of the term “redemption” within Western political and revolutionary literature from the Early modern period onwards is also analysed, to show that the original, juridical, meaning of redemptio ab hostibus is a key reference.

Il volume presenta un quadro aggiornato di riflessioni sul tema della democrazia e della libertà ... more Il volume presenta un quadro aggiornato di riflessioni sul tema della democrazia e della libertà in Alcide De Gasperi. Gli autori portano alla luce e analizzano intuizioni e momenti decisivi per la cultura politica del cattolicesimo nella prima metà del Novecento: l'indicazione delle basi morali della democrazia, il legame con il potere, il dialogo tra differenti generazioni nel momento della rinascita del Paese dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, la visione dell'unificazione europea, la laicità con la quale De Gasperi difese la democrazia italiana da possibili derive integraliste. Lo studio del suo pensiero conferma che egli fu un protagonista del complesso confronto tra il cristianesimo e le nuove libertà civili e democratiche. La sua fedeltà ai principi, la passione per i valori universali della persona, il sano realismo nella costruzione dell'Europa sono alcuni aspetti affrontati in queste pagine con acume storiografico ma anche con uno sguardo al presente e alla necessità di prendersi cura della qualità della democrazia senza mai dare per scontate le sue conquiste.
