Enogeografie.

The book is the outcome of the work of several experts in the field and offers an analytical framework of the state of the art of the use of Historical GIS in Italy. It explores the methodological and epistemological implications of the application of geographic information systems to a wide range of different areas of research, on the basis of multiple case studies that have been developed throughout decades of experience. By presenting the problems posed by information and digital tools, the cognitive potential for the new “digital historical geographers” and the consequences in the field of public dissemination, the text illustrates how the use of GIS is changing the understanding and analysis of the geographies of the past and how Spatial Humanities are consolidating in Italian academic research.

However, this topic appears to be less frequently addressed within the field of historical geography. Inspired by reflections on participatory didactic of and through research, this article shares an educational project focused on the use of sources, tools, and methods that are specific to historical geography. In particular, the paper offers a historical geography competence-oriented framework based on GIS, field work and Repeat Photography applied to iconographic sources produced during the Grand Tour. The result is a competence-based didactic path built through research methods and tools that seeks to provide multiple skills to academic students of geography, as well as archaeology, history, or art history. Learning outcomes and tasks are discussed with reference to EU key competences and geographical competences. In conclusion, it is argued that this framework can assert the centrality of the spatial approach, in dialogue with other diachronic disciplines, as recommended by the national and international debate.

The aim is to assess the main research trends by focusing on academic production in Italian and, therefore, to update previous bibliographic studies. Methodologically, the paper outlines the criteria used to identify the publications taken into consideration, from which key areas of discussion have emerged: the history of cartography and of geographical knowledge; Historical GIS; the history of landscapes and territories; the emerging of new methods, sources and interdisciplinary approaches. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of fostering historical geographical research that addresses contemporary challenges.
Gabellieri N., A place in the shade? Shaded spaces as a domain of geographical research: a literature review (1990–2024), “GeoJournal”, 90, 2025, 26

Although geographic studies specifically focused on this subject are relatively rare, there is a substantial body of interdisciplinary research that addresses the theme of shade in relation to ecological, urban, medical and social research interests. There have recently been calls to further analyze these spaces, especially if we consider their importance in relation to climate change. In response to this, this paper aims to examine shade as a field of geographical research through a literature review. Ninety-four articles published in international journals between 1990 and 2024 were identified. The articles were analyzed with particular reference to the distribution in time of the publications, the geographic location of the case studies, interdisciplinary connections, research interests, and the methodologies used. The study reveals the interdisciplinary nature of shade studies and their growth in recent years. The literature analysis enables us to identify dominant research trends and at the same time highlight certain gaps. The study also emphasizes the value of shade as a resource, its many benefits, and its environmental and social significance as a geographical factor at various levels. In conclusion, this paper seeks to bring the topic of shade to the forefront of research, encouraging further empirical studies with a particular focus on the right to shade and climate change mitigation.

This work, written approximately a century after the Council, contains extensive geohistorical information about the seventeenth- century Trento region, including details on landscape features, settlements, social practices, and environmental aspects, along with relatively precise location references. Relevant passages were transcribed and geolocated within the GIS using a dataset associated with a point layer. The GIS processing of this source enables: the dissemination of the seventeenth-century Trentino geographic context to the general public through publication via a webGIS platform; a deeper exploration of contemporary research topics, such as the history of vineyard landscapes or the historical animal geography of Alpine areas, facilitated by spatial analysis of the reported data. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the potential of using GIS to process geohistorical sources, including textual and narrative ones.

However, while detective novels are one of the most successful literary genres in the book market, detective fiction-induced literary tourism is still a relatively unexplored phenomenon. This research aims to determine whether and to what extent detective fiction can promote tourism and affect readers’ attitudes and behaviours towards narrated localities. To fulfil this aim, we have carried out empirical research based on a quantitative method, through the analysis of the answers to a questionnaire shared in Facebook groups. Questions aimed to identify the readers, their motivations for reading different types of detective fiction and their interests and expectations, as well as the push and pull factors behind potential detective fiction-induced tourism. We have examined a corpus of 330 answers from Italian readers. The survey has pointed to the existence of various types of reader-tourists, whose choices depend on the settings of the novels they read, which the detective’s gaze is able to mediate. Despite what previous literature has claimed, the analysis of the questionnaire shows that dark and uncanny atmospheres are not major pull factors. Instead, readers of this particular genre declare that they are more interested in visiting the actual places that have inspired fictional ones, and in immersing themselves in the local societies represented. In conclusion, it appears that the preferences of detective fiction readers not only affect their destination choices but also their approaches to those destinations.

This paper discusses the potentialities and the limits of historical cartographies for the diachronic study of vineyard landscapes, also by cross-checking with the bio-stratigraphic evidence collected during the archaeological research. In this regard, two case studies are presented, located in Liguria and Trentino (Italy), which allow for the exploration of different documentary series (18th-20th century), due to the diversity of sources available for the territories of the different pre-unification states of the Peninsula. The historical cartography was collected and analyzed in series, according to the cartographic filtering method, to build a “biography” of the vineyard landscapes. In conclusion, the paper highlights the potential of geo-historical analysis and cartographic sources to provide information on the extent, forms of cultivation, and composition of historical vineyards, also in terms of applied historical geography. At the same time, the examination of the two case studies allows to bright to light theoretical and methodological clues for discussing the official categories currently employed

This is the question raised by Ian Gregory and Alistair Gedder, that in their famous 2014 book Toward spatial humanities claimed for more broader application of GIS into humanities disciplines and in and outside the Academy. Seven years after this volume, interpreted as a watershed in the long path of digital humanities disciplines, this panel aims at assessing the state of the art of Historical GIS (HGIS), intended as a set of methods and procedures for the collection, archiving, management, processing, representation and sharing of data retrieved from historical sources, such as maps, photograph and textual documents.
