Research paper thumbnail of Experimental and modelling study of tomato pomace waste drying in a new solar greenhouse: Evaluation of new drying models

Renewable Energy, 2019

Abstract Algeria industry fruit processing generates a huge amount of waste which causes a seriou... more Abstract Algeria industry fruit processing generates a huge amount of waste which causes a serious environmental problem. Thereby, the use of solar drying as a clean energy process seems to be a promising solution. This will enhance the value of fruit waste by reusing it in a dry form, and will also contribute to the protection of the environment. For this purpose, an innovative greenhouse solar dryer has been designed at the Solar Equipment Development Unit in Bou Ismail. An experimental study of solar drying kinetics of industrial tomato pomace was conducted to test the performance of the new solar dryer as a waste processing dryer. The drying temperature of the tomato waste, using this type of dryer, varies between 40 and 58 °C. The duration of the drying operation for a final product is only 5 h. Five new universal and dimensionless models and five different drying models chosen from the literature were evaluated in order to select the model that better fits the experimental data generated during the drying process. Among the different models tested, it emerged that the new model2 was the most suitable to describe the drying process of tomato waste. Also, the diffusion coefficient and the activate energy were studied and determined. The effective diffusivity varies between 3.2E-9 and 4.7E-10 m2/s with activation energy is 75.6 kJ/mol.

High Costs of operation; Energy dependence; fuel supply problem (removal of fuel suppliers); complicated and expensive maintenance; Low lifetime (about 5 years and sometimes less); Impossibility of 24 hours electricity production ( or need for several GE; Sound Births and waste oil management issues). Furthermore, the continuous decline in the prices of generators based on renewable energy and the increasing reliability of these systems lead to a greater use of renewable energy sources for power generation in remote areas. A property which limits the use of renewable energy is related to the variability of resources. Fluctuations in load according to annual or daily periods are not necessarily correlated to the resources. In remote areas, the preferred option is the coupling between multiple sources, such as wind turbines and solar panels, this coupling is called hybrid power system. Algeria’s geographic location presents several advantages for the development and use of renewable energy, namely, solar energy and wind energy. In addition, Algeria has huge deposits of natural gas, 98% electricity comes from gas. Therefore, currently, the production of electricity from renewable energies primarily depends on their competitiveness with economic gas.The objective of this work is to study the technological feasibility and economic viability of the hybrid system (PV/fuel)electrification project in a school located in Tarat (Algeria) and to reduce traditional power emissions by using renewable energy. The HOMER model is used in this study to size the proposed system and determine the optimum configuration.

Abstract-The moisture contents of balance of desorption and of adsorption of the leaves of marjoram (Oregano marjoram), were determined to 30, 40, and 50 °C by the static gravimetric method. The balance was obtained after 12 days for desorption and 9 days for the adsorption. The effect of thermal hysteresis is observed in the range of the tested temperatures. For the modeling of the isotherms of sorption, and for the prediction of the hygroscopic behavior, during the storage or during the drying, four mathematical models were used. The model of Peleg in four parameters optimizes the smoothing of the experimental points in a rather important domain of the activities of the water. Relatively important changes are felt in the thermodynamics properties of the marjoram in terms of differential enthalpy and entropy However, these last ones counterbalance and it is possible that they are mainly the result of differences in the structure of the water around the suburb of the plant and the site which harmonizes, so much before than after the sorption.

Research paper thumbnail of Comparative approach to the performance of direct and indirect solar drying of sludge from sewage plants, estimation of rates of organic materials

The objective of this work is to contribute to the enhancement of sludge of wastewater treatment ... more The objective of this work is to contribute to the enhancement of sludge of wastewater treatment plants in Algeria. A kinetic comparison was made to the direct and indirect solar driers operated with natural convection. The indirect dryer gives temperatures and high efficiency with the direct drier. Drying curves show that the higher the temperature, the higher the short drying time and the drying speed is fast. Solar dryers have reduced the time needed, a water reduction of 71c/o which increases the dryness of the mud from 14.47c/o to 85.53c/o. According to the results obtained, the use of sludge could be very interesting from an agricultural and energy point of view, because it contains more than 58% of MO and can reach 63% in the three summer months (June, July and August). Several pathways exist for the disposal of sludge, but the choice must depend on the cost of installation, the origin of sludge, the added value of the resulting product and the potential impact of the industry accepted on the environment. The landfill (also called storage) is a low-rewarding and legally prohibited in many countries. However, application of composts obtained should not be done without confirming their hygienisation, their stabilization and maturity. In addition, the sludge compost should be free of phytotoxicity, with concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Cr ...) and organic micro levels below international standards. Our work was performed at the National Sanitation Office of Boumerdes, the objective is, to assess the ...

Research paper thumbnail of Modeling and comparative analysis of solar drying behavior of potatoes

Renewable Energy, 2020

Abstract Potatoes are a very high demand product in the consumer market and are widely available ... more Abstract Potatoes are a very high demand product in the consumer market and are widely available everywhere in Algeria. With the extensive levels of solar energy across the country, solar drying becomes a natural avenue for the production of solar dried potatoes as a new prospective commercial product. This paper is a study of the drying process of potatoes using an indirect and a mixed solar dryer with forced convection and a comparison of their respective performances. Experimental results indicated that the mixed solar dryer had the slowest drying rate compared to the indirect solar dryer with drying times of 4 h 45min and 3 h 40min respectively, even though the temperature at the tray level in the mixed solar dryer was higher than that of the indirect solar dryer. Fourier series and Laplace transforms were used to solve the diffusivity equation. Seven theoretical models were investigated and their relative accuracy validated against experimental data. Two new dimensionless models were found to best fit the drying curve of potato slices using the two dryers. The proposed models were found to be more accurate for charactering the drying process of Sultana grapes, chili peppers, bananas, mangoes and cassava, according to models reported in the literature under different operating conditions using various solar dryer designs.

The objective of this work is to contribute to the enhancement of sludge of wastewater treatment ... more The objective of this work is to contribute to the enhancement of sludge of wastewater treatment plants and solar energy in Algeria. A kinetic comparison was made to the direct and indirect solar dryers operated with natural convection. Two models have been developed to simulate drying. Under natural conditions and at ambient temperatures below 32°C, the indirect dryer gives high temperatures and efficiency compared to the direct dryer. Drying curves show that the higher the temperature is, the shorter drying time is and the faster drying speed is. From the drying curves, only the decreasing speed phase or slowdown (phase 2) is observed in the two types of drying, which is similar to results obtained in the literature with plant products. Solar dryers have reduced the time needed, a moisture reduction of 71% which increases the dryness of the mud from 14.47% to 85.53%. Thirteen mathematical models existing in the literature were tested and compared with the proposed models. The proposed models and the modified Henderson and Pabis model showed the best smoothing qualities of all indirect and direct dryer drying kinetics, with an advantage for the proposed models as they are dimensionless (independent models of units of measurement), they contain fewer parameters and verify the boundary conditions.
