Scaling up Conservation Finance The Latin America and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds-Re... more Scaling up Conservation Finance The Latin America and Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds-RedLAC-was created in 1999 and congregates currently 25 funds from 15 countries. Its mission is to set up an effective system of learning, strengthening, training, and cooperation through a Network of Environmental Funds (EFs) aimed at contributing to the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in the region. RedLAC, with the support of the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation and the French Fund for the Global Environment (FFEM, for its name in French), implements a capacity building project with the objective of strengthening the capacity of EFs to develop innovative financial mechanisms for biodiversity conservation, reducing their dependence on donations, and also to support the establishment of new EFs, by systematizing and sharing proven best practices in funds day to day operation. This project, coordinated by the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund-Funbio-on behalf of the RedLAC membership, has the goal of promoting the implementation of new revenue streams in the Funds' portfolios, creating financially sustainable sources of funding for these institutions to invest in conservation. Having knowledge management as its core, the project will systematize the existing information on different topics of interest for EFs and build new content based on the collective experience of the Funds' community. This book was prepared to support the third workshop of the capacity building initiative, focusing on the roles of EFs in REDD+ markets. More experienced funds have developed REDD related initiatives, although most of them are not engaged in projects yet. This is the case of Funbio and Fondo para la Acción Ambiental y la Niñez, who shared their experiences and most recent efforts in this book. Funbio organized this workshop, in the city of Itaipava, in Brazil, on July 5 to 7, 2011.

Rapid reductions in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be needed if the nations of the wo... more Rapid reductions in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be needed if the nations of the world are to succeed in reducing the risks of climate change. Globally, tropical deforestation and land-use change causes approximately 15% of annual GHG emissions. Many scientists, economists, and policymakers agree that reducing tropical deforestation can significantly reduce GHG emissions in a cost-effective manner. Because the development of a new international climate treaty that could take effect when the Kyoto Protocol's first commitment period sunsets at the end of this year continues to be delayed, efforts now are under way outside the formal international negotiations conducted under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to realize the potential for reduced emissions from deforestation and degradation and additional forest carbon sequestration (REDD+) activities to reduce near-term GHG emissions.
One of the most promising alternative pathways to begin to realize this potential and provide proof-of-concept that REDD+ could become an important source of low-cost, high-volume GHG emissions offsets is the Governors' Climate and Forests Task Force (GCF). The GCF is composed of representatives from 16 states and provinces of Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, and the United States, including 14 states and provinces located in tropical forest nations that are developing jurisdiction-wide REDD+ programs capable of coming into alignment with California's new statewide GHG cap-and-trade program and other emerging market and non-market opportunities.

This report reviews the status of these REDD+ programs, assesses progress made toward the development of nine essential components of REDD+ programs, and evaluates the potential of these programs to provide high-quality GHG emissions offsets that could be used for compliance purposes in emerging GHG cap-and-trade systems in California and elsewhere or transferred into other systems of performance-based compensation.

The report presents four detailed case studies of evolving REDD+ programs. It includes the two states (Acre, Brazil, and Chiapas, Mexico) that have signed a memorandum of understanding to link their REDD+ programs with California's new GHG cap-and-trade system. It also includes the state that has achieved the greatest emissions reductions (Mato Grosso, Brazil) and one of the most mature REDD+ programs in Indonesia (Aceh).

Since the 1990s, the country has been going through major changes, when the Government opened the market to the world. If in one hand poverty is still a problem in India, on the other hand the country has a considerable number of emerging and well-educated middle class. Furthermore, a great number of foreign investments after the trade liberalization in India brought economic development to the country; therefore, improving the social living standards. However, as India is a very diverse country, it was necessary to examine how the democracy had been affected by the influence of international standards that were introduced to the country, observing the cultural and religious aspects of the society. The importance of an efficient democratic system is key for a country as India, with a diverse population. This book addresses issues that are broadly discussed by the United Nations, such as rule of law, accountability and transparency, responsiveness, freedom of rights, and equality.

Advocacy, Stakeholders Engagement, and Customers Relations: the Perspective of Tobacco Growers in Brazil, 2024

Defense presentation for the title of Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), Université de Bord... more Defense presentation for the title of Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), Université de Bordeaux, France.

There has been a growing debate in the last few years on the acronyms ESG, standing for “Environmental, Social, and Governance” and CSR, standing for “Corporate Social Responsbility.” These hot topics have been being discussed by multiple organizations, often being perceived by the private sector as an opportunity to improve the corporate image and the institutional reputation, building a positive public perception. To build a sturdy reputation of an organization is a process that takes time, and is frequently considered a competitive advantage, allowing a company to have a better communication to its audience, building trust, and improving the profitability. Since specific interest groups have specific objectives and perceptions to topics such as environment preservation, it is possible to think that the perceived relevance depends on the audience.
The world has been going through major changes in the last few years, particularly on how people communicate, which information to trust, and how much online communication is different from the traditional way of doing business. Reputation is often associated to customer behavior, and the assumption that creating value on “doing good” will build trust within the expected audience. Private companies have been significantly investing on how to build trust with their stakeholders, addressing on topics such as social and environmental responsiveness. Such topic is often researched (Randerson, K., 2022; Camilleri, M. A., 2022; Zimon, G., Arianpoor, A., & Salehi, M., 2022); however, the association of corporate reputation to customers' loyalty lacks understanding, particularly considering agroindustrial processes. The tobacco agroindustrial supply chain is highly stigmatized and regulated, demanding continuous efforts from the private sector to communicate appropriately with multiple organizations. Such demand for a better perception is also important for tobacco growers, that are often questioned why they grow tobacco instead of other crops.
In the process of improving the awareness of the economic relevance of the tobacco agroindustry supply chain, tobacco growers have become more exposed to the public debate, playing a significative role on advocating positively the public perception, particularly using digital social medias. In communicating their interests, tobacco growers have become important players in lobby and advocacy efforts, defending not only their interests, but contributing to the overall perception of the tobacco value chain. It is important to consider the relevance of tobacco growers defending a segment that was mostly supported only by big companies until recently. Therefore, the relationship between tobacco growers and the purchasing and processing companies have been changing from the pure commercial perspective, to a stronger relationship, encouraging loyalty, as they become active voices in the advocacy and lobby processes. The improvement of such relationship between tobacco growers and tobacco processing companies demands further analysis, particularly on what makes strong the relationship between growers and tobacco companies.
As tobacco growers take significant role in defending the tobacco agroindustry process, it may be said that they step into the industry perspective, i.e., demanding similar advocating and lobbying skills as the private sector. As tobacco growers start doing the same as purchasing and processing companies, it is questioned how they are perceived to the general public, and how the relationship between tobacco growers and processing companies have been evoluting. Therefore, it may be expected that tobacco growers look for similar communication methods, also adopting best practices that might improve their public image.
The proposed research analyses the perspective of tobacco growers, questioning how they defend their interests, what matters in the relationship to tobacco processing companies (corporate loyalty versus tobacco price), and what do they consider relevant to advocate on their interests. The proposed research is based on stakeholders' theory, customer relations and loyalty theory. For the research, interviews were conducted with 204 tobacco growers in the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná.
