The Historia Romana was the most popular work on Roman history in the Middle Ages. A highly inter... more The Historia Romana was the most popular work on Roman history in the Middle Ages. A highly interesting aspect of its transmission and reception are its many redactions which bear witness to the continuous development of the text in line with changing historical contexts. This study presents the very first classification of such rewritings, and produces new insights into historiographical discourse in the Middle Ages. Drawing on an analysis of the paraphrase contained in the manuscript Bamberg Hist. 3, which is edited here for the first time, the author offers numerous examples of textual transformations of language, style and ideology, all of which give us a clearer picture of textual fluidity in medieval historiography.

Le présent volume se propose, à travers des approches comparatives appliquées à un corpus de text... more Le présent volume se propose, à travers des approches comparatives appliquées à un corpus de textes d’histoire appartenant à des périodes et des milieux différents, d’aboutir à une compréhension plus approfondie de l’influence de la typologie et des images bibliques sur l’historiographie du Moyen Âge: historiae, chronica, gesta, annales, vitae, etc. Il s’agit, en effet, d’un aspect souvent négligé de l’historiographie médiévale, en raison, probablement, des controverses théoriques qui entourent le domaine. Cette publication devrait fournir de nouveaux outils de travail qui seront des apports précieux pour tous ceux qui s’intéressent à l’historiographie à l’époque médiévale.

Discussed poets or anonymous poems include the Versus Eporedienses, Godfrey of Reims, Baudri of Bourgueil, the Deidamia Achilli, the Heu male te cupimus, the Sub uespere Troianis menibus, the Carmina Burana 92, 99–102, the Anna soror ut quid mori, Hugh Primas, the Viribus arte minis, Peter Riga, the Alea fortunae, Simon Capra Aurea, the Altercatio Ganymedis et Helenae, the Causae Aiacis et Ulixis I–II, the Quis partus Troiae and the Bella minans Asiae. A short postface offers a rapid synopsis of the vernacular literature that marks the late Middle Ages.

However, this Ovidian literary activity was a local phenomenon limited to northern and central France and especially to the Loire Valley. 7 The cathedral school of Orléans 8 was the most important centre for the revival of Ovid and other Roman classics. In the heyday of the so-called Twelfth-Century Renaissance, 9 one of the Orléans teachers, Matthew of Vendôme, redefined elegy as the literary genre of love poetry. In his Ars uersificatoria (ca.1170), a guide to poetics, he opens the second book with a personification of the different forms of poetry. Inspired by Ovid, Boethius and Martianus Capella, he describes his nightly vision of a vernal appearance of Lady Philosophy accompanied by the four maidens Tragedy, Satire, Comedy and Quarta pharetratos Elegia cantat amores (cf. Rem. am. 379) fauorali supercilio, oculo quasi uocatiuo, fronte expositiva petulantiae, cuius labella prodiga saporis ad oscula uidentur suspirare; quae ultima procedens non ex indignitate, sed potius ex inaequalitate pedum: tamen in effectu iocunditatis staturae claudicantis uindicat detrimentum, iuxta illud Ouidii:

This paper pays homage to the work of this enigmatic figure by exploring the relationship between her plays and those of Terence.

This article examines Hrotsvit of Gandersheim’s perceptions of her own authorship and especially ... more This article examines Hrotsvit of Gandersheim’s perceptions of her own authorship and especially how she responded to the literary conventions of her time. An analysis of her prologues reveals that the Saxon canoness was anxious not to disappoint her critics. For instance, in the cases where she dispenses with the source of an auctor or distances herself from the auctoritas of a model, Hrotsvit apologizes to her audience. Traditionally, her justifications have been interpreted as pure captatio benevolentiae. In this article, another approach is proposed: Hrotsvit’s departure from the auctores is contextualized in her overarching project of “rewriting” Terence.

Depuis les dernières décennies, nous assistons, chez les chercheurs en historiographie médiévale,... more Depuis les dernières décennies, nous assistons, chez les chercheurs en historiographie médiévale, à un intérêt accru pour la culture du manuscrit et pour le phénomène de réécriture. Dans ce domaine, les manuscrits contenant des compilations constituent un objet d’étude particulièrement précieux et fascinant. Le terme “réécriture” s’applique habituellement à l’usage, très répandu au Moyen Age, de produire des nouvelles versions de textes (d’auteurs), ou bien, dans le cas de nos historiographes médiévaux, il s’applique à la manière assez libre dont on traitait les sources. D’ailleurs, dans l’étude des compilations, le concept de “réécriture” peut acquérir un sens plus large. L’art de combiner des textes pour en former une lecture continue est aussi, d’une certaine manière, une forme de réécriture. La présente communication, consacrée au manuscrit numéro 8816 de la bibliothèque nationale d’Espagne, a pour but de s’interroger sur la “réécriture” dans ces deux sens : d’une part, sur la logique de combinaison de tous les textes (le manuscrit en tant que recueil), et d’autre part, sur les principes de composition de ce qu’on a qualifié, jusqu’ici, de compilation d’histoire romaine d’après Tite Live, César, Eutrope, Suétone, Orose et Paul Diacre (ceci constitue les feuillets 72-244 des 260 feuillets du manuscrit complet). Le premier et plus important résultat de cette contribution est la découverte de l’auteur de la compilation d’histoire romaine. En effet, les feuillets 72-244 sont une copie incomplète du Compendium Historiae Romanae de Riccobaldus de Ferrare (1245-1318). Il s’agit donc, dans un premier temps, d’aborder la méthode de travail de Riccobaldus : comment il évaluait, critiquait et commentait ses sources. On verra, entre autre, que Riccobaldus est marqué, dans le choix des textes, par son goût littéraire, et qu’il restructure ou explique ses modèles pour améliorer la lecture. Dans la deuxième partie de cette communication j’examinerai les rapports entre les différents textes du manuscrit: les Collectanea rerum memorabilium de Solin, l’anonyme De septem mirabilibus mundi, l’apocryphe Epistola Alexandri ad Aristotelem, le Compendium Historiae Romanae de Riccobaldus, et les Moralisationes historiarum de Robert Holcot (1290-1349). Sur le plan du contenu, cette analyse nous apprend que, les textes montrent plusieurs points communs. Deuxièmement, un groupe de marginalia témoigne d’une lecture morale. Ces marginalia sont des références à Valère Maxime rédigées en marge des textes de Solin et de Riccobaldus. En conclusion, cette contribution montre que l’idée du recueil est d’offrir aux lecteurs (ou plutôt aux auditeurs) un savoir du monde et de l’homme, mais en même temps de les amener, par une ascension spirituelle, à se perfectionner dans la voie du salut. C’est un chemin qui part du plan physique ou géographique, en passant par le plan historique et moral, pour monter jusqu’à Dieu. Ainsi, ce recueil représente une image du monde analogue à celle de la Divine Comédie et de la mappemonde de Hereford.

The medieval commentary on the Metamorphoses by Pierre Bersuire known as the Ovidius moralizatus ... more The medieval commentary on the Metamorphoses by Pierre Bersuire known as the Ovidius moralizatus exists in two versions named after their place of composition: the Avignon version (A) and the Paris version (P). Current research distinguishes two Avignon redactions (A1 and A2), without however offering a satisfactory explanation of their differences. The present article examines certain textual additions that seem to be characteristic of the A2 redaction.

This article is intended to be a first study on the sources of the second book. Among the few Latin sources, Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada’s De rebus Hispaniae appears as particularly interesting. The main part of this article is devoted to an analysis of the use of this source.

Here and there, the anonymous poet of Ovide moralisé intersperses his immense poem, translating a... more Here and there, the anonymous poet of Ovide moralisé intersperses his immense poem, translating and commenting on the Metamorphoses, with passages often taken from other Ovidian works, thus foreign to the hypotext. This article presents an analysis of one of those passages which, at first glance, might be considered curious textual contaminations, pieces inserted for the sheer pleasure of compilation, and which seemingly serve no function beyond that of embellishing the text. The first part of the analysis identifies the sources of the passage in question (Ovide moralisé, xiv, v. 5660–5774). As it happens, the French poet used the Fasti to reconstruct the myth of Romulus in his own way. The second part demonstrates even more interesting results: each stage of the myth has been juxtaposed with an episode from the history of Salvation (Ovide moralisé, xiv, v. 5995–6120). By systematically developing this allegorization, our poet shows great creativity.
Thanks to the age-long efforts of Birger Munk Olsen, to whom the present article is dedicated, we... more Thanks to the age-long efforts of Birger Munk Olsen, to whom the present article is dedicated, we have a good overview of how the Roman classics were spread, read and (re-)used up to the year 1200, but we have no such cicerone for the Late Middle Ages. Taking the medieval commentaries on the Metamorphoses as a point of departure, the article is an attempt to open up the Ovidius moralizatus of Pierre Bersuire, a fourteenth-century commentary that hitherto has received relatively little notice due to the lack of a critical edition. After a preliminary discussion of how the Ovidius moralizatus relates to the earlier medieval commentary tradition and a general assessment of the Avignon and Paris versions, the core of the article focuses on the explanatory principles.

The poem Versus Eporedienses (ca. 1080) is one of the earliest examples of Medieval Latin metrica... more The poem Versus Eporedienses (ca. 1080) is one of the earliest examples of Medieval Latin metrical love poetry. Ever since the first edition in 1869, certain enigmatic aspects of the poem have been debated. One fundamental issue that remains unsettled is the identity of the puella and the related question of classical models. Marco Giovini proposed to identify her as one of the Heliades arguing that the poem must be read as both a contrasting pendant to Juvenal’s Satire 11 and as a poetic continuation of the Ovidian myth of the Heliades (Met. 2.340–66). After an initial criticism of this hypothesis, the present article offers an intertextual analysis, on the basis of which it is argued that Amores 3.6 provided the author of the VE with a model for his poem and puella, namely Rhea Silvia.

Here and there, the anonymous poet of Ovide moralisé intersperses his immense poem, translating a... more Here and there, the anonymous poet of Ovide moralisé intersperses his immense poem, translating and commenting on the Metamorphoses, with passages often taken from other Ovidian works, thus foreign to the hypotext. This article presents an analysis of one of those passages which, at first glance, might be considered curious textual contaminations, pieces inserted for the sheer pleasure of compilation, and which seemingly serve no function beyond that of embellishing the text. The first part of the analysis identifies the sources of the passage in question (Ovide moralisé, xiv, v. 5660–5774). As it happens, the French poet used the Fasti to reconstruct the myth of Romulus in his own way. The second part demonstrates even more interesting results: each stage of the myth has been juxtaposed with an episode from the history of Salvation (Ovide moralisé, xiv, v. 5995–6120). By systematically developing this allegorization, our poet shows great creativity.
Thanks to the age-long efforts of Birger Munk Olsen, to whom the present article is dedicated, we... more Thanks to the age-long efforts of Birger Munk Olsen, to whom the present article is dedicated, we have a good overview of how the Roman classics were spread, read and (re-)used up to the year 1200, but we have no such cicerone for the Late Middle Ages. Taking the medieval commentaries on the Metamorphoses as a point of departure, the article is an attempt to open up the Ovidius moralizatus of Pierre Bersuire, a fourteenth-century commentary that hitherto has received relatively little notice due to the lack of a critical edition. After a preliminary discussion of how the Ovidius moralizatus relates to the earlier medieval commentary tradition and a general assessment of the Avignon and Paris versions, the core of the article focuses on the explanatory principles.

The poem Versus Eporedienses (ca. 1080) is one of the earliest examples of Medieval Latin metrica... more The poem Versus Eporedienses (ca. 1080) is one of the earliest examples of Medieval Latin metrical love poetry. Ever since the first edition in 1869, certain enigmatic aspects of the poem have been debated. One fundamental issue that remains unsettled is the identity of the puella and the related question of classical models. Marco Giovini proposed to identify her as one of the Heliades arguing that the poem must be read as both a contrasting pendant to Juvenal’s Satire 11 and as a poetic continuation of the Ovidian myth of the Heliades (Met. 2.340–66). After an initial criticism of this hypothesis, the present article offers an intertextual analysis, on the basis of which it is argued that Amores 3.6 provided the author of the VE with a model for his poem and puella, namely Rhea Silvia.

In light of recent results given by Monique Goullet in the field of hagiography, with the present... more In light of recent results given by Monique Goullet in the field of hagiography, with the present paper I have pointed out some parallel findings in the field of historiography. Forged after the term launched by Goullet, réécriture hagiographique, I propose a similar term, historiographical rewriting, as a field of research, which deserves greater attention in the future. More specifically, I wanted to show with a few examples how the idea rewriting may be instrumental in our re-readings or re-interpretations of the histories of the Latin West.

This article analyses several passages from a tenth-century paraphrase of the Epitome de Caesarib... more This article analyses several passages from a tenth-century paraphrase of the Epitome de Caesaribus, an anonymous and epitomized collection of imperial lives originally produced around the year 400. The analysis shows that among the many textual changes of linguistic, stylistic and ideological nature, errors did also occur during the rewriting process. The author explores some possible approaches to these passages.

Possamaï-Pérez selon lequel Achille figure le Christ dans le livre xii de l’Ovide moralisé. Son travail constitue sans doute un apport considérable à la compréhension de la signification de la matière troyenne dans l’Ovide moralisé. Cependant, aucune étude semblable n’a été faite sur la figure de Pélée. Le présent article avance l’hypothèse que l’interprétation typologique de la matière troyenne peut être étendue au livre xi. En effet, une analyse des v. 1099–2995 de ce livre montre que les péripéties du père d’Achille figurent le destin d’Adam, de sorte qu’une double typologie s’établit : Pélée-Achille/Adam-Christ.

This article examines certain textual developments and additions related to the myth of Aesculapius (Met. 2.598-632 + 15.622-744) that distinguish the Parisian version from the Avignon version of the Ovidius moralizatus.

Au cours de la première partie du XIVe siècle, les deux mythes liés à Bacchus contenus dans les M... more Au cours de la première partie du XIVe siècle, les deux mythes liés à Bacchus contenus dans les Métamorphoses d’Ovide (3.253-315 et 3.511-733) sont moralisés à trois reprises : par le poète anonyme de l’Ovide moralisé (v. 1320) et par Pierre Bersuire qui indépendamment de l’Ovide moralisé produit une première version de son Ovidius moralizatus en Avignon (v. 1340) et, après avoir pris connaissance de l’Ovide moralisé par l’intermédiaire de Philippe de Vitry, rédige une version étendue à Paris (v. 1350) pour laquelle il se sert, entre autres, de l’Ovide moralisé. Bersuire inclut également des explications sur la figure de Bacchus dans son chapitre introductif, le De formis figurisque deorum. Comme il n’existe pas d’édition critique de l’Ovidius moralizatus, on ne connaît ni la nature ni l’étendue exacte des passages empruntés par Bersuire à l’Ovide moralisé. L’objectif de cette communication est, d’une part, de proposer une présentation des moralisations de la figure de Bacchus dans l’Ovide moralisé et l’Ovidius moralizatus, et d’autre part, d’évaluer dans quelle mesure Bersuire est tributaire de son prédécesseur anonyme.
