L'approche adoptée met en relation les niveaux discursif, prosodique et gestuel. Seule la combinaison de trois niveaux d'analyse permet de distinguer les différentes fonctions des pauses.

They actually shift from neutral to more emotional speech. The corpus described below is a series of podcasts in which ordinary people from different countries have been video recorded giving their opinion on issues that involve emotional speech. Three emotions have been considered: cold anger, sadness and happiness, and in terms of prosody, the paper concentrates on the intonation contours used by the speakers rather than on pitch span and F0 level. The annotation of gestures made with ELAN is based on a modified version of the MUMIN Coding Scheme and the conclusion of the paper is that speech is felt to be more emotional when a set of prosodic and gestural parameters is modified from more neutral speech, e.g. smiles or laughs do not in themselves convey happiness, but must be combined with other gestural and prosodic features to do so.

Our analysis will be three-dimensional : we will first describe the acoustic characteristics of the pauses and of the tone-units they separate, in order to show the differences between these pauses and other pauses such as demarcative or hesitation pauses. This analysis will include the following parameters : length of pause and rate of speech of the distinct tone-units, F0 movements and intensity before and after the pause. We will then try to see what kind of gestuality is implied in the case of focalisation and will propose a discursive analysis of the context in which the pauses appear.

The project directly meets the present needs in linguistics where a growing number of researchers become aware of the fact that a theory of communication which aims at describing real interactions should take into account the complexity of these interactions. However, in order to take into account such a complexity, linguists should have access to spoken corpora annotated in different fields. The paper presents the annotation schemes used in phonetics, morphology and syntax, prosody, gestuality at the LPL together with the type of linguistic description made from the annotations seen in two examples.

The study is based on spontaneous French informal conversation and the intensive gestures correlates we looked at pertained to the morphological, prosodic and gestural dimensions.

In another study on the characteristics of young people's speech involving the same corpus I noticed that one of the specificities of my two speakers lied in the constant repetitions of segments. Some segments are not only repeated in the case of hesitation but also as a stylistic device. I propose to describe in the present paper the stylistic repetitions in terms of what kind of segments are repeated and what is the role of such repetitions. Taking into account lexico-syntactic, prosodic and gestural parameters, I will also show that these repetitions cannot be assimilated to some hesitation on the parts of the speakers.

It shows that prosody and gestures made by the speaker align to the pragmatic structure of narratives and are especially used to distinguish the climax, e.g. the point of the narrative. Indeed I will show that the climax is most of the time uttered with a slower speech rate and higher voice intensity than the rest of the narrative. It is also accompanied by more gestures than the other parts of the narrative, and for the narrative to be successful these gestures must show speaker concern for the partner in the interaction. * I am particularly grateful to Traci Curl and Gareth Walker for their most useful discussion of this article. I would also like to thank Richard Ogden for his comments on a much shorter version of this paper that helped develop the few ideas I had then proposed. Correspondence:
