HISTORICAL AND LINGUISTIC ASPECTSThe concept of "Eastern Latinity", like that of "Latinity", in general, is an ideal concept/a mental construct, based on realities which are in permanent transformation, in every aspect defining it: historical, geographic, political, military, administrative, juridical, ethnical, linguistic or cultural. In this study, we aim to provide a synthesis of the most significant phonetic, grammatical and lexical-semantic particularities of Vulgar Latin in the area known as the Pars Orientis during the Antiquity.

We start from the assumption that cultural identity is a construct, an ever-evolving process involving not only objective, externally induced factors, but also elements of willfulness. This perspective of analysis, also adopted by historians and cultural studies specialists, is based on the perception that the geographical location and historical events impinging on Romanian society along the centuries have created a matrix defining some of the present features of Romanian identity.

Its primitive forms were mostly rural, with minor indigenous deities, and consisted mainly of ritual for practical purposes (invoking protection for agricultural crops, wars and family). An absorption of the rich Greek and Oriental mythological corpus followed. In the imperial age, in Rome, "there are so many gods that it is easier to meet one than it is to find a man" (Petronius Arbiter). A large part of this heterogeneous and complex corpus was inherited by the European Romanic and non-Romanic peoples. All around, written culture has copiously fed on traditional unwritten mythology.

Platon, Cratylos). By highlighting the processes of memory and association, the catalogue cumulates the examples which underlie inductive reasoning, i.e. "proceeding from the particular to the general" (Aristotel, Topica, 12,105a13). The transition from pure dialectics to rhetorical argumentation was accompanied by the exploitation of the ethical and esthetical functions of the representative examples (parádeigma) in order to support an idea. Used as arguments of authority, as models of divine or human behaviour, of manifestations of nature etc., the examples thus catalogued acquire the attributes of rhetorico-stylistic devices (enumeratio, amplificatio, gradation etc.). The whole of the respective texts contains numerous semantic fields which are extremely difficult to render, in terms of the possibilities of coherent configuration, according to the criterion of a rigorous matching of the signified to the most appropriate lexical signifier. The internal difficulties of any language are largely increased by the attempt to equate terms from another language, even more so when the source language is Homeric Greek, an ideal idiom, attested exclusively in its poetic variant. We illustrated the truth of the matter elsewhere be analysing some names of plants and birds or names of weapons and household objects. In the following pages we are going to look at some names of water courses and deities.
