However, the role of local firms in sourcing from suppliers has been overlooked. In this article, we report the findings of a qualitative study and demonstrate that the local MWFs helped establish India as the leading supplier of pharmaceuticals worldwide and in the Global South. We show how the different types of local MWFs ('propagandists', 'pioneers', 'connectors' and 'adaptors') impact the strategic coupling, industrial upgrading and governance in South-South value chains and contribute to regional economic development.

This article documents the ambiguous dreams, aspirations, and hopes of the managers of micro, small, and medium companies involved in manufacturing, marketing, and distributing low-cost generic medicine. The analysis draws on semi-structured interviews with managers (n ¼ 66) and shows that they contrast sharply with the universalist, tech-intensive, and salvationary imaginaries often associated with the global pharmaceutical industry. On the one hand, India's small-scale entrepreneurs see themselves as instrumental to their family's financial welfare and the economic development of their local social groups. On the other hand, they like to imagine themselves as part of India's emergence on the international stage and better global access to affordable medicine. Such imaginaries form a low-tech approach to Global Health where generic pharmaceuticals are not taken as transformative technologies but are meant to play specific socioeconomic roles at different scales.

However, this article shows that the start-up ecosystem has unevenly developed across cities and economic sectors, and has failed to empower the overall population, so far. Using a comprehensive database on start-ups retrieved from Tracxn, a business data and analytics company, the authors find that venture capital concentrates amongst graduates stemming from a handful of prestigious education institutes in India and abroad. The article analyses the role of entrepreneurship policies and argues for a shift of focus and resources towards the building of a more inclusive start-up ecosystem.

Five « industrial or economic corridors » have been formally identified by the government, connecting the country's largest cities. The analysis of business locations shows that, in a context of strong and sustained growth, the country’s productive capital is concentrating in the main cities and along corridors, shaping large regions capturing investments and industrial activities. The location of companies is determined by a set of complex factors. Their logics are distinct from the State development strategies and are framed in a governance which strengthens the role of regional public authorities and private actors in the spatial structuration of India.

Based on extensive interviews with managers and consumers across Indian cities, we address the commercialisation and the consumption of malls as two separate social fields and we highlight the frictions between them. Since the early 2000's, the rapid development of these commercial infrastructures addressed the perceived demand of the so-called " new middle class ". However, the predominantly utilitarian conception of malls has often clashed with the actual uses of the diverse Indian consumer, whose need for safe and comfortable public places has transformed malls into major places of sociability, where a large number of users seldom consume or consume little. We argue that from " creating " a demand, agents in the field of mall supply have shifted their strategy towards " meeting " the demand, i.e. the need for specific " experiences ".

We used this data to highlight their potential contributions to the study of social groups’ activity space. Using a sample of luxury shoppers, we analyzed the daily activity and mobility patterns of the upper middle class in Delhi, India. We intersected these data with the results of an ethnographic study carried out in two luxury shopping places in Delhi and found that the lower middle class was overrepresented in the Twitter sample. We argue that the varying motivation to post on social media tend to skew the representativeness of social groups sampled on a spatial criterion. We eventually advocate the complementary use of geotagged social media data and qualitative data based on ethnographic research.

The airport, originally a modest colonial-era structure, served a limited number of passengers and destinations. However, with India's economic growth and liberalization, the airport underwent expansions and privatization, transforming into the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Now a bustling global hub, it showcases a blend of traditional and modern architecture, reflecting India's aspirations for progress and connectivity. The postcard encapsulates the airport's journey from a sleepy entrance to an emblem of India's thriving aviation industry.
