Two stereoselective routes have been developed: i) a chemical pathway in four steps from D-xylose, and ii) a chemoenzymatic pathway directly from biomassderived xylans. These salts displayed interesting properties as ionic liquids. Their structures have been correlated to their thermal properties (melting, glass transition and decomposition temperatures).

Research paper thumbnail of Radiation-curing of acrylate composites including carbon fibres: A customized surface modification for improving mechanical performances

Radiation Physics and Chemistry, Dec 1, 2014

ABSTRACT The lower transverse mechanical properties of radiation-cured acrylate-based composites ... more ABSTRACT The lower transverse mechanical properties of radiation-cured acrylate-based composites reinforced with carbon-fibre with respect to the thermosettable analogues was investigated from the viewpoint of chemical interactions at the interface between the matrix and the carbon material. XPS analysis of representative commercial carbon fibres revealed the presence of a significant amount of chemical functions potentially exerting an adverse effect on the initiation and propagation of the free radical polymerization initiated under high energy radiation. The EB-induced polymerization of n-butyl acrylate as a simple model monomer was conducted in the presence of various aromatic additives exhibiting a strong inhibiting effect, whereas thiols efficiently sensitize the initiation mechanism and undergo transfer reactions. A method based on the surface modification of sized fibres by thiomalic acid is proposed for overcoming the localized inhibition phenomenon and for improving the mechanical properties of the resulting acrylate-based composites.

Research paper thumbnail of Interfacial layer in high-performance CFRP composites cured out-of-autoclave: Influence of the carbon fiber surface and its graphite-like properties

A high energy radiation curing method (electron-beam) was used to initiate free radical polymerization of acrylatebased matrices. Comparison with state-of-the-art thermally cured composites reveals the lower transverse mechanical properties of the radiation-cured CFRP composites. To improve the interfacial layer, several points related to the polymerization at the interphase have been investigated. Notably, the influence on the polymerization of acrylate matrices of the chemical functional groups present at the carbon fiber surface and its graphite-like properties are discussed using representative molecules. It is shown that these additives exhibit strong inhibiting effects, whereas thiol groups efficiently sensitize the initiation mechanisms and undergo transfer reactions. Moreover, it is discussed that graphite-like molecules affect the matrix polymerization and the mechanical properties of the composites. An adapted solution is proposed.

Thus, tool wear is a main preoccupation for industrial engineers. For this reason, it is important to better understand the phenomena which occur at the interface between tool and sheet in this kind of process. That is why, a pin on disc tribometer for high temperature has been designed and achieved. Its originality consists in having an open contact on a continuously new disc surface. This machine permits the simulation of the contact at the tool/product interface during the hot drawing process. In this paper, this new tribometer is described. Then, a friction and wear comparative study of various tool materials is carried out at a temperature of 400 • C and with a pressure of 20 MPa. The classification of these materials is done according to the measurement of the friction coefficient and the wear characterization. Pins, which represent tools are: X153CrMoV12 steel samples uncoated and coated with TiAlN deposited by PVD process and nodular cast iron GJS 600 ones. Sheets made of steel and representing drawing products are: uncoated and coated samples by bimetallic alloy coating. The tribometer is able to classify and to evaluate the tribological performances of the different combinations of pins and sheets. Tests show that coatings reduce friction. However, they do not prevent adhesive wear of pins.
