The mathematical model of the distillation column is deduced based on the equations of mass and energy balances for each stage, detailed model for both reboiler and condenser, and heat transfer equations. The Dynamic Relative Magnitude Criterion, DRMC is used to assess the interactions in different feed plate locations for a seven plate (Benzene-Toluene) binary distillation column ( the feed plate is originally at stage 4). The results show that whenever we go far from the optimum feed plate position, the level of interaction augments.

The idea behind the proposed method is to overcome the limitations raised from the application of each technique alone. The application of this proposed technique in the fired heater indicate that the heater needs more safeguards to work in a safe manner, as a conclusion more safety instrumented functions should be added, and the safety level of the existing ones should be checked.

Several recommendations raised from our study to improve the safety of the plant particularly since it is considered as an old plant start working since 1980. The study is completed by simulating the deduced dangerous scenarios which is the explosion of sphere S181 (for butane storage) using ALOHA software. In the following some results for thermal effect of an explosion scenario for S181 sphere

The first formalised method for as-sessing the level of interaction present in a system of loops was Bristol's relative gain array. Being based solely on steady state data, construction of the RGA is pleasingly simple and application of the technique has attracted significant researchers. Where strong interaction effects arise as a problem in practice, their elimination can be approached at a progression of levels each carrying a progressively increased cost implication. The decision as to which of these levels of approach is warranted in overcoming any specific case of interaction involves gaining insight into the mechanics of the system itself. In the future, development in the use of detailed dynamic modelling and simulation may lead to the possibilities of evaluating the degree and form of interaction present and of developing compensating strategies. In thi...

The idea is to modify the design of the feed plate in such away the liquid holdup is augmented. this is can be done by adding a small tank . after that the interactions betweenthe two loops are measured using the DRMC method. the results show that augmenting the holdup three times will give unity values of DRMC elements which indicate that there is a complete decoupling of the two loops.

The Dynamic Magnitude relative criterion (DRMC) is used to assess the level of interactions between the loops in the other hand the mathematical models for different configurations are deduced based on the consistency relations between the different control schemes and energy balance LV configuration.

The mathematical models for the material balance configurations (DV and LB) are deduced using mathematical transformations (in the paper the general case of transformation between any two configurations is presented), taking the conventional configuration (LV) as a based configuration, the Dynamic Relative Magnitude Criterion (DRMC) is used to assess the interactions and disturbance propagation. The results show that the material balance configurations (DV,LB) are non interactive compared with LV but large disturbances propagate from the bottom to the top in DV and with the same magnitude in LB and LV.

Recent work in distillation control has largely been concerned with this issue. Emphasis has been put on answering the important question of how to pair manipulated and controlled variables that minimize or eliminate the apparent interaction between the composition control loops. The two pairing strategies that have received the most attention in the literature are conventional control LV and material balance control DV. Other pairings strategies that have been proposed to overcome the inherent limitations of the LV and DV structures are configurations that use ratios of flows as composition manipulators. Big deal of research on distillation column during the last decade has concerned this issue

A frequency domain approach using magnitude/log frequency plots is presented which allows assessment of the direction and intensity of disturbance propagation present in a system. Some examples of interaction presented previously in the literature are analyzed on this basis and found to exhibit strong disturbance propagation features. In addition some anomalous results from use of the relative gain array are placed in context and related to the effects of using real rather than perfect controllers

The models for these configurations are deuced using mathematical transformations taking the energy balance structure (LV) as a base model. The dynamic relative magnitude criterion (DRMC) is used to assess the interactions. The results show that the introduction of ratios in controlling the column tends to minimize the degree of interactions between the loops.
