The emergence of Internet is one of the hallmarks in the revolution triggered by the networking technology. Today, academic libraries are struggling to keep their place as the major source of inquiry in the face of emerging internet technology. Internet technology in academic libraries has revolutionized not only the way of disseminating information but also how users seek and access information. As a developing country like Bangladesh, internet facilities of higher academic institutions are not satisfactory. It is found that the services of different units of the selected university libraries are not sufficient to meet the needs of the respondent’s information requirement. These are more and more e-resources should provide for the library users, Internet facilities should increase, arranging training program for the library users and library professionals, subject coverage and Internet access points should increase and trained and skilled library personnel should be appointed for the university libraries. In the transition to the knowledge/ information based society, information literacy is essential for the effective and widespread use of information. It is used today to describe a set of skills and competencies, processes and actions, and attitudes that lead one to be a wise information consumer. This study observes information literacy concepts, standard indicators, and readiness of Central Public Library (CPL) and examines whether the CPL is ready to assume an enhanced responsibility for information literacy education. This study finds that the CPL in Bangladesh has shortcomings in information literacy education programmes due to lack of physical facilities, absence of information retrieval tools and low level of professional education of public library staff. However, recognition that present approaches are not meeting the requirements of users and more effective system with experienced educator is required. This study also emphasizes and suggests that without a push of external help through finance, professional expertise, facilities, and patronizations the CPL would not be able to properly address information literacy issues.

If libraries are to meet these challenges and to successfully innovate, they must not only provide value to the user unidirectionally, but must work together with the user for service innovation. However, co-creation and innovation studies are rare in libraries. Islam, Agarwal and Ikeda (2015a) proposed a value co-creation framework for service innovation in academic libraries. In this study, we empirically test the framework. Open-ended web-based questions were sent by email to heads of libraries and other librarians. 21 respondents answered the questions based on their perceptions on value co-creation and service innovation practices in their libraries. Findings show that academic libraries work with users to co-create value in areas such as project management, makerspaces, information literacy, design of library websites, etc. Despite some concerns, most respondents saw value co-creation as critical to the innovation of new services and the continuing success of their library. The study sheds light on the importance of value co-creation for service innovation in academic libraries, and contributes to literature in this emerging research area of service science.

However, it is unclear to what extent has mainstream KM literature embraced LIS research as a domain within KM. In this research, we seek to ascertain the place of the LIS field in KM journals by analysing what the top KM journals – as identified by Google Scholar – have published on LIS in the last two decades since the year 2000. We analysed the publication trends, and the distribution of these articles by LIS‐related terms used, region/country and information setting type. We also identified the top‐cited LIS articles from within these and their coverage in different journals and in different years. 83 LIS‐related articles were found within the 4601 research articles published in top KM journals. Only 1.8% of the KM articles were LIS‐related. By showing the relatively low coverage of LIS within KM research, the study demonstrates that LIS researchers/practitioners need to do more to be recognized as an important area within KM. KM journals can also enable greater synergies with LIS for mutual benefit.

Ma... more Professional associations across various fields have largely been struggling to stay relevant. Many have been watching a steady decline in membership numbers over the years. In many cases, members who join do not renew their membership. Existing members complain about the association not giving enough value for their membership dues. While the association does all the right things that it has been doing for the years since its existence, there is often a gap in what a changing membership base or potential audience for membership demands and what the association is able to deliver. In such a scenario, what must associations do to change the tide, to continue to stay relevant, to stem the decline, and to attract new members, and retain the ones they have? Using literature from knowledge management (KM), especially Agarwal & Marouf (2014)'s KM adoption framework, Nonaka & Takeuchi (1995)'s SECI model, and Agarwal & Islam (2014)'s KM Tools framework, and a study of the websites of professional associations in library and information science, this paper proposes a thriving KM strategy as a way for professional associations to not just survive, but to thrive. The ideas presented would be relevant to the leadership of professional associations.

The purpose of the present study is to discuss the situation of OA in the developing world, with a focus on Bangladesh. The study also addresses why OA is important for developing countries and which initiatives have been taken in Bangladesh. Finally, we discuss some challenging issues of OA and suggestions on how to overcome these issues. It is rather obvious that developing countries have always faced a lack of research information and were unable to afford sufficient subscriptions to journals. The other side of the picture is the poor dissemination of the research outcome in the developing world. In Bangladesh, only three organizations have their institutional repository and have a reasonable number of local OA journals. We will identify some problems that impede the process of building open access IR, or more generally an OA environment in Bangladesh. We are convinced, however, that we will witness in the near future a sustainable growth of open access initiatives, with more open access literature and digital repositories.

In this research, four concrete beams were cast with regular steel reinforcement in flexure. The control beam had typical shear steel and the other three beams were strengthened in shear with CFRP bars. Strain gauges were attached with the shear reinforcement of all four beams at various shear critical locations. Strains during loading to failure of the beams were recorded using a data acquisition system. The performance of the NSM technique was found to be very effective with no occurrence of delamination, debonding or fracture of FRP. Effective strains in the NSM CFRP bars were determined through analyzing the collected strain data. A new formula to calculate the nominal shear strength provided by NSM CFRP bars has also been proposed.

Determining factors that may influence knowledge sharing behavior constitutes an important area of research. There have not been many studies investigating the knowledge sharing behavior of information professionals in the developing world, especially in the context of South Asia. The focus of the larger study is to investigate the factors affecting the knowledge sharing behavior of information professionals in Bangladesh. This paper reports on the study design and the work-in-progress. A research model has been developed to measure the knowledge sharing behavior (KSB), intention to share knowledge (KSI), the motivational factors affecting the desire to share, and attitudes towards specific methods for knowledge sharing. It is hypothesized that the motivational factors and attitude towards methods will affect KSI, which in turn will affect KSB. This paper includes a review of the literature as well as the variables in the research model. Future work will include developing the survey instrument to gather data on the variables, and sending a web-based survey to information professionals in Bangladesh. The study builds on past work on knowledge sharing behavior. The primary contribution is identification of motivational factors (both intrinsic/attitude-based and extrinsic i.e. social or environmental based) that affect the knowledge sharing intention and behavior of information professionals in Bangladesh. It helps identify differences in knowledge sharing behavior between professionals in the developed and developing world, and between individualistic versus collectivistic cultures, and further research in the area of knowledge sharing and knowledge management.

Research paper thumbnail of Pattern of bone marrow regeneration following chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia

Journal of Medicine, Feb 1, 1987

Hematopoietic regeneration following chemotherapy was studied in serial bone marrow biopsy (BMB) ... more Hematopoietic regeneration following chemotherapy was studied in serial bone marrow biopsy (BMB) specimens from 20 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who went into complete remission following therapy. Immediately after intensive chemotherapy, the marrow was extremely hypocellular and edematous and contained widely dilated sinuses. Subsequently, areas of large uniform unilocular fat cells developed from multilocular precursor fat cells. Early aggregates of regenerating hemopoietic cells were seen closely adjacent to bony trabeculae (BT) and appeared to grow out from the endosteum in a sequential progression suggesting an origin from their endosteal progenitors. During the early part of hemopoietic regeneration, individual precursor cells appeared to migrate from these hemopoietic aggregates towards the central intertrabecular marrow space where they formed colonies of various hematopoietic cells in close association with fat and marrow sinusoids. Later, as the normal hemopoiesis was restored due to the gradual enlargement and confluence of these hemopoietic colonies, this characteristic pattern of paratrabecular proliferation and migration of cells became less obvious. These observations suggest that hemopoietic regeneration in AML after therapy is a local phenomenon and is initiated by progenitors of endosteal cells.

We show that, in such a metric, the orbits of both massive and massless particles are governed by a variational principle which involves the index of refraction and which assumes the form of Fermat's principle or of Maupertuis's principle. From this variational principle we derive exact equations of motion of Newtonian form which govern both massless and massive particles. These equations of motion are applied to some problems of physical interest.

Currently, no specific AASHTO design guideline exists for bridges against blast loading. Structural engineering methods to protect infrastructure systems from terrorist attacks are required. This study investigated the most common types of concrete bridges on the interstate highways. A 2-span 2-lane bridge with Type III AASHTO girders was used for modeling. AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design methods were used for the model bridge design. The girders, pier caps and columns loading were analyzed for probable blast loading. The model bridge failed under the probable blast loads applied over and underneath the bridge. The research findings show that typical AASHTO girder bridges are unable to resist probable blast loads. The prospect of practical experiments depends on how it would be convenient and accessible to the learners. The infrastructure and facilities for laboratory experiments is not adequate in conventional and/or ODL system in developing countries. The hands on experience are essential for effective transfer of practical skills to the learners which are often limited in ODL system. However, several innovative approaches have been proposed to overcome the barrier. In open and distance learning educational system, there would be introduced so many methods for conducting practical courses. These are as laboratory based practical classes; home experiment kits; audio-visual media and computer mediated systems that included simulations and multimedia technologies. This paper tries to explain the use of existing methods of practical works those are organizing at BOU and also conclude some recommendations to ensure the quality of the BOU's practical courses.

It is introducing in all educational system like conventional as well as open and distance learning (ODL).
