In the Fifties and the Sixties, Italian society undergoes changes as quick and deep as probably never before in its history. The book deals with this pivotal moment through an unusual, yet very powerful category of historical sources: the songs of the Sanremo Festival.
With singer-stars such as Nilla Pizzi, Claudio Villa, Domenico Modugno, Adriano Celentano, Mina and Gigliola Cinquetti, those early, very popular editions of the Sanremo Festival reflect the path Italy was covering from postwar to the "boom" years, from poverty to prosperity, from rural society to a modern industrialized power.
By analyzing the songs both from a textual and a musical point of view, and by placing them into the historical context, the book underlines how those notes and lyrics, those singer-stars and their audiences may reveal us the changes (and efforts to resist them) of a country that was both attracted and scared by modernity.
Among things that change are the way songs represent social reality, the relation with America and its culture, the image of love, woman and family.
As political parties and intellectuals such as Pasolini, Eco, Fallaci and Montanelli judge the Festival, Italian people sanction its success with a loud voice, by either whistling it, criticizing it, or doing both at the same time.

The most dangerous nuclear crisis has been widely and accurately studied, but its transnational nature, and its socio-cultural dimension still remain largely unknown. This study aims to provide a contribution in this direction.
Based on more than 7 years of research conducted in the archives of several countries (US, UK, Italy and more), the book also makes extensive use of the international press of those days, complemented by selected oral history interviews.
It argues that the public showdown between the US and the USSR constituted a global experience, as the fear of a nuclear escalation ignited reflections, demonstrations and repercussions all over the world, with different intensity and color. The global nature of the crisis is highlighted in the Preface chapter, applying theories by Fernand Braudel and Marshall McLuhan. Part One provides a detailed account of the crisis’ events. Part Two then turns to their perceptions, both on a political and socio-cultural level, showing the interconnections between the two spheres. Such approach is applied here to two national contexts (US, Italy) and three transnational categories of observers (political thinkers, religious figures, scientists).

English title: "Screen memory. The Fascist Racial laws through Italian State Television and Historiography."
English abstract: In recent years the issue of racial laws has drawn strong attention in Italy from historians, institutions and media. However, that was not always the case. Thus, this paper reflects on the ongoing path toward awareness of those crucial facts and on how said path of memory intertwined with a pivotal medium such as Public Television. When and how have the racial laws been represented to Italians through historical documentaries, debates and fictions broadcasted by R.A.I. TV? Have the interpretations they provided changed along the decades? By analyzing directly old and recent TV programs (“teche”) in Rai’s archives, combining them with additional sources and confronting them with the historiographical outputs of the time, the article shows on one hand the relevance of TV as a source for studying the memory of a historical event. On the other hand, it shows the shift from an interpretation of those facts that was largely self-absolutory, centered on the help provided by Italians to persecuted Jews (“Italians, good people”) to the current opposite emphasis on the widespread complicities of Italian society - thus highlighting also the presence of an echo between historical research and TV representations on this theme.

This research article deals for the first time with the reaction of Martin Luther King Jr. to the Cuban missile crisis of October 1962. In doing so, it also presents a document of special relevance: the draft of a previously-unknown private letter from dr. King to President Kennedy, in which the civil rights leader praised Kennedy’s management of that crucial nuclear confrontation between US and USSR and saw in it the potential for détente. The paper reflects on the elements currently available for the interpretation of this piece of evidence and, with regard to the relationship between the two leaders, it argues that the way Kennedy handled the Cuban crisis may well have played a role in Dr. King’s reassessment of Kennedy’s evolving qualities of leadership - a view that King will further develop over the course of 1963 (in the most fruitful months of their cooperation) and will express after Dallas.

As will be demonstrated, their reaction was one of strong support for the government's decisions, in spite of the high risks involved and the harsh ongoing domestic struggle for civil rights. Evidence of this support will include examples of personal reactions by prominent black leaders and intellectuals. Also, an episode of segregation which occurred during the crisis will be used to show how in those days of emergency their struggle for equality persisted. The interconnections between domestic civil rights and foreign policy issues will be highlighted.

"Leonardo Campus’ chapter explores the Italian political perspectives on the crisis, using new documents from Italian, US and British archives, as well as interviews. The divisive nature and the desire for peace that characterized such reactions are highlighted. The government, led by the Christian Democrat’s Fanfani, gave unenthusiastic support to the US moves, while Togliatti’s Communist Party supported the USSR. Moreover, as the presence of NATO nuclear missiles made Italy both a target at risk and a possible subject of negotiation, it will be shown how Fanfani secretly tried to use them to play a role as a peace mediator."

“How do you narrate history on television? I think the answer is not easy at all” This is the incipit of a presentation given more than twenty years ago by Enzo Forcella, journalist, writer of history and RAI manager among the most authoritative of the latter 20th century. His question still rings true today, and most relevant, in a world increasingly unfamiliar with the memory of the past and yet needing it all the more. Especially in a cultural environment where the centrality of images and its predominance over the written text is undeniable and probably irreversible. In this context, the present presentation will aim to show - in a nutshell and with no illusion of exhaustiveness - some of the main formats that have been used in the history of the (mainly, but not only, Italian) television to recount the past and deepen its knowledge and divulge it to the general public, through the production of documentaries and TV programs.
After pointing to a few models found through the decades, the presentation will share some considerations on virtues and limits of each of them, and muse on the possible ways of avoiding the latter. Said overview will lead to reflect on the current challenges now related to history on TV - including recurrent questions such as the relation with the audience, the choice of the particular historical topics to cover, the delicate cooperation between historians and TV authors, or the problem of the hierarchical relations between images and written text in the preparation of said programs.

However, this has not always been the case in the past. On the contrary, at times the public awareness of what happened in Italy against Jews starting in 1938 was actually quite low or distorted. It can thus be useful to retrace the main steps of the (still ongoing) journey towards public awareness of that crucial moment of Italian history. This can also be done by questioning how such evolution intertwined with television, the new mass-medium that became pivotal precisely during postwar decades. When did Italian State television start discussing racial laws? How was said phenomenon narrated to Italians by RAI’s documentaries? Did the interpretations of those events change through time? What kind of an impact may one presume that said representations had on the public debate and awareness? How did all of this relate with the historical investigations of the topic and with its literary and cinematographic narratives? While touching upon these issues, the seminar will also provide a preview on the ways that are being implemented to present the research findings to a general public, wider than the scholars’ community. By using the new digital media for the construction and the dissemination of a research in public history.
The seminar was delivered in English on May 13, 2020 as part of the series hosted by the Venice Centre for Digital and Public Humanities - Ca' Foscari University of Venice. The seminar is now visible at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLkICSIkSWA&t=3s

This recurrence has brought with it renewed attention on the topic, on historiographic, institutional and mediatic terms.
However, the public awareness of what happened in Italy against Jews starting in 1938 had not always been so high in the past. It may well be useful, then, to reflect on the uneasy path of progressively coming to terms with that crucial moment of our history – and on how said course has (or has not) intertwined with the media of television, increasingly central since the postwar years.
When did Italian TV start to mention and discuss racial laws? How was the issue presented in the documentaries of RAI, Italian State television? Did the forms of expression and interpretations of those facts change in the course of the decades? What kind of impact may those TV accounts have had on the public debate and awareness of that event? Finally, how did all this intersect the historiographic interpretations on the topic, or with its literary and cinematographic accounts? Our starting point will be constituted by a TV episode on the racial laws we authored for the thematic channel “Rai Storia”. This will be integrated with other material coming from Rai’s repertoires (“teche”) and other additional sources.

The results of the referendum on UK’s membership in EU, openinf the gravest crisis in the history of the European Union, came unexpected to many, also among journalists and media operators. However such an outcome would have perhaps appeared less surprising had one looked back at the history of the British relationship with the European project. Our contribution to this panel traces back the historical roots of Brexit, mainly using a particular categories of sources: Rai’s TV news reports and historical programs on the topic. Which were the key moments of said relationship and how did Italian State television reported them to the Italian public, from the Sixties to the Brexit campaign and results? Our starting point is a TV episode we authored for the thematic channel Rai Storia regarding said relationship. This will be integrated with other material coming from Rai’s repertoires (‘teche’) and other additional sources.

The Sanremo Festival: An Overlooked ‘Gold Mine’ for Italian Studies
In the 1950s and 60s, postwar Italian society underwent changes as quick and deep as probably never before in its history. Our contribution will deal with this pivotal moment through an unusual, yet very powerful category of historical sources: the songs of the Sanremo Festival. This musical contest, started in 1951 with relatively low ambitions, quickly became a national event capable of catalyzing the emotions (and criticisms) of an entire nation. And it still exists to this day. Thus, it represented a potential gold mine for cultural and social historians - yet one that has long been neglected until recent years.
In the early editions of the Sanremo Festival, tunes such as ‘Vola, colomba’, ‘Tutte le mamme’, or the world-hit ‘Nel blu, dipinto di blu’—sung by popular stars such as Nilla Pizzi, Claudio Villa, Domenico Modugno, Adriano Celentano, Mina, and so forth—reflected the path Italy was covering from postwar to the "boom" years, from poverty to prosperity, from rural society to a modern industrialized power.
At the same time, the lyrics of Sanremo songs conveyed images of space – either physical or sentimental, rural or urbanized, touristic or surreal, native or discovered through migration. The Sanremo Festival is also an interesting case for an intermedial analysis, because the original radio event changed into full TV coverage in 1955, radically altering its nature in the following decades until the format it possesses today.
