This book offers an analysis of the collection, accompanied by text editions. The approach adopted is to explore the documents in three main thematic sections: arable land, urban properties, and temple prebends. The administrative texts have been treated as a group. Particular attention is paid to the role played by specific families, individuals or groups in each area of interest, as well as to shedding new light on the ownership patterns and business strategies that characterised the activities of the parties to the documents.

Among them is that of Laodice, identifying either the wife of Antiochus II or the daughter of Antiochus III. The fame of the former in Babylonian documents is mainly connected to the endowment of royal land she made for the citizens of Babylon, Borsippa and Kutha, recorded in the so-called Lehmann text. While the name of the second Laodice is spelled in cuneiform as f lu-di-qé-e, 3) more variability characterizes the writings of the name of the Laodice married to Antiochus II, who is recorded in documents written between 245 and 140 BC as f lam-ú-di-qé-'e, f lu-da-qé-e or f lu-di-qé-e. 4) The recent publication of a tablet in the British Museum recording a duplicate copy of the so-called Lehmann text bears witness to the existence of a further spelling of the same name in addition to those collected by Monerie, i.e., f la-ú-di-qé-e. 5) A comparison of the different spellings for the name and the sources in which they occur appears in the

and the Babylonian worlds became something more than intermittent. Cuneiform
sources bear multiple traces of what we may label a “Greek presence” in Babylonia.
Surveying the ample debate on the topic and through the analysis of a few selected
examples, the present paper aims at investigating what Greek elements in Babylonian
sources may tell us with regard to the forms and characteristics of the contact. Before
tackling the problem, the paper will explore terminology as a fi rst step in order to
set the basis for a fruitful dialogue between diff erent disciplines.

adaptations and transformations allowed the use of cuneiform to write a full range of different
languages, both Semitic and non-Semitic, and also enabled the birth of brand-new (alphabetic)
writing systems. The contact between languages by means of cuneiform culminated in the first
millennium BCE, when cuneiform was used to write Greek and Aramaic, and conversely with the
adoption of the Greek alphabet to transliterate Babylonian texts.

Individuals acting in legal and administrative records are typically identified by a three-tier onomastic chain, including the name of the individual, the patronym and the clan name. They seem to be the members of the urban notability of Uruk. Exceptions to this rule are represented, among others, by individuals identified through a two-tier expressions of filiation, complemented by a professional name; the lack of a family name is generally interpreted as an indication of non appartenance to the urban elite and the onomastics of some of those individuals seems to reveal a foreign origin for them.
The paper will try to cast new light on the interrelations between identification practices, ethnicity and professions in the corpus.
