This article published in Singapore Journal of International and Comparative Studies 1998 (2) pp.... more This article published in Singapore Journal of International and Comparative Studies 1998 (2) pp. 142-174. It examines the issue of ownership rights over archaeological objects found in Indonesian waters. In particular, ownership claims over shipwrecks and the treasures contained therein are considered. The author analyses the position under international law, as well as relevant Indonesian legislation on the matter, primarily Republic of Indonesia Act No 5 of 1992 on Cultural Heritage Objects. The compatibility of the Indonesian legislation with international law is examined, as are the inadequacies of both the Indonesian and international legal regimes.
