The disease occurs depending on large mutations, deletions/duplications, small mutations, point mutations and mid-intronic mutations of the gene encoding the protein called dystrophin. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate the pathogenic variants of DMD in the affected family. Methods: A 23-year-old male who had weakness in the muscles, difficulty climbing the stairs, frequent falls at the age of seven was referred to the Medical Genetics department for an initial diagnosis of DMD/BMD. His siblings also suffered from similar symptoms. Therefore, eight individuals from the same family were included in the study. MLPA analysis was performed to evaluate deletion/duplication and variants of the DMD gene were evaluated by targeted NGS. Sophia DDM algorithms were used for the bioinformatics analysis of data, and the pathogenicity of the mutations was evaluated based on in silico prediction tools. Results: Allelic variants were identified in 8 individuals of the family including two suspected patients and six suspected obligatory carriers. NGS analysis revealed that proband and his nephew were hemizygous for pathogenic c.10018T > C (p.Cys3340Arg, C3340R) mutation and mother, two sisters and niece were carriers. Conclusions: C3340R mutation was first reported in a Taiwanese BMD patient among the 23 different pathologic changes. This variant identified as pathogenic because of being highly conserved cysteine substitution in the dystroglycan-binding domain of dystrophin. This study has the importance of reporting an infrequent pathogenic mutation, C3340R, in two patients and four suspected obligatory carriers of a Turkish family.

Research paper thumbnail of Lack of Visual Habituation in Multiple Sclerosis: An Electrophysiological Study

Neuro-Ophthalmology, Jan 29, 2013

Twenty-one patients with this diagnosis and with a history of optic neuritis (ON), 29 such patients without a history of ON, and 25 normal controls were enrolled to study. One eye of each patient in the group with a history of ON and one eye of each subject in the control group was randomly selected. In the group with a past history of ON, the affected eye of the patients was selected in unilateral cases and the eye in which showed the greater latency delay of the P100 component in bilateral cases. P100 amplitudes were determined by visual inspection in 10 blocks of 512 responses and habituation was analysed as the percentage amplitude change between the 1st and 2nd-10th blocks. Amplitude of the P100 component of the VEP showed a significant clear-cut habituation after the first block in the control group but neither patient group showed a significant decrease in P100 amplitude. We conclude that our electrophysiological study has shown a lack of habituation in patients suffering from RR MS. This result could be important for the evaluation of visual system involvement in patients with MS, with or without a previous history of ON.

Material and Method: This study included adult patients who were hospitalized with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 infection. The demographical features, symptoms, clinical presentations, medical history, medications and clinical progress and outcomes were noted using data collection form by the clinicians. The effect of GI symptoms on clinical outcomes in patients with mild COVID-19 infection was statistically evaluated. Results: 307 patients were included to the study. 159 of patients (51.7%) had an at least one GI symptoms, 18.2% of those presented only GI symptoms while 21.2% only non-GI symptoms. 27% were asymptomatic at admission. The most common GI symptom was loss of appetite that presenting 16.9% patients. The second and third most common GI symptoms were diarrhea in 15% patients, nausea and loss of taste in 14% patients, respectively. There was no significant difference in laboratory parameters between GI and non-GI symptoms groups. When age, gender, smoking status, and comorbidities of patients with GI and non-GI symptoms groups were compared, there was no difference in mean age, gender, smokers, and comorbidities. In addition, the length of hospital stay (p=0.377), complete healing (p=0.372) and mortality (p=0.351) was similar in patients with GI and non-GI symptoms groups respectively. Early diagnosis of COVID-19 infection presenting with GI symptoms can help prevent infection spread. The majority of these symptoms were mild, and their presence was not associated with worse clinical outcomes.

Design and methods: This research was designed as a randomised controlled experimental study. Sixty children were randomised into two groups, the maternal-voice group and the controls. The children in the maternal-voice group listened to the maternal voice during the procedure. Although questionnaire forms were used to determine the descriptive characteristics of infants, the Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability (FLACC) pain assessment scale was used to evaluate pain level. Heart rate and oxygen saturation were also measured. Results: There were significant differences in the pain, heart rate and oxygen saturation levels between the maternal-voice and control groups. Pain levels and heart rates of the children in the experimental group during and after the painful procedures were much lower, and their oxygen saturations were higher than those of the children in the control group. Practic implications: Distraction methods, such as listening to the maternal voice, should be used as a nursing intervention to reduce pain and decrease heart rate and increaseoxygen saturation in children during painful procedures in the paediatric intensive care unit. The maternal voice is recommended as a helpful option in cases when a pain control method is required. Future research needs to explore different interventional practices.

Factors such as sleeping position, bed sharing, pillow use, smoking during pregnancy and the breastfeeding period constitute risk factors for sudden infant death syndrome. This study aims to identify the risky behaviors of mothers with infants that may put their children at risk for sudden infant death syndrome. Design and methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study. Data were collected using a questionnaire that was developed by the researchers. The questionnaire was filled out by 456 mothers who applied to the family health center between October 2014 and January 2015. Results: The greatest risk factor is the infant's sleeping position. A total of 77.9% of the mothers put their babies in bed in a non-supine position; 65.8% used a pillow when they put their babies in bed, 52.9% used a soft mattress, and 28.5% shared their beds with their babies. Prone sleeping was more likely to occur when smoke was present in the home or a pillow was used. Conclusion: Nurses should notify families of the risky behaviors that can cause sudden infant death syndrome and plan appropriate nursing care.

He had received a rabies vaccination 2 months previous because he had been bitten by a dog. Findings: Clinical and laboratory findings supported acute transverse myelitis. A hyperintense lesion and expansion at the level of conus medullaris was detected on spinal magnetic resonance imaging. Although neurologic involvement is one of the main causes of mortality and morbidity in Behc ¸et's disease, the factors that aggravate the involvement of the nervous system are still unclear. Vaccination may have been the factor that had activated autoimmune mechanisms in this case. To our knowledge, involvement of the conus medullaris in Behc ¸et's disease after rabies vaccination has not been reported.

F... more Sudden infant death syndrome is the most common cause of death during the post-neonatal period.

Research paper thumbnail of Lack of Visual Habituation in Multiple Sclerosis: An Electrophysiological Study

Neuro-Ophthalmology, 2013

In this study, we aimed to investigate habituation of pattern-reversal visually evoked potentials... more In this study, we aimed to investigate habituation of pattern-reversal visually evoked potentials (VEPs) in patients with relapsing remitting (RR) multiple sclerosis (MS).
