Based on the archival material of Archivio Storico De Propaganda Fide, this paper reconstructs th... more Based on the archival material of Archivio Storico De Propaganda Fide, this paper reconstructs the history of the religious books commissioned to be printed in Venice for use in Venetian Dalmatia in the eighteenth century. The case study looks at the political relations between Rome and Venice, and the linguistic debate between Rome and Dalmatia to analyse the course of the print of a Glagolitic breviary the printing house of Demetrio Teodosio obtained permission to print.

Sulla base del materiale archivistico dell’Archivio Storico De Propaganda Fide, il presente lavoro ricostruisce la storia dei libri religiosi commissionati a Venezia per essere utilizzati nella Dalmazia veneziana nel XVIII secolo. Il caso di studio prende in esame le relazioni politiche tra Roma e Venezia e il dibattito linguistico tra roma e la Dalmazia per analizzare il percorso della stampa di un breviario glagolitico che la tipografia di Demetrio Teodosio ebbe il permesso di stampare.

In the 18 th century, Dalmatia used Venetian Italian, Old-Štokavian and Čakavian as spoken langua... more In the 18 th century, Dalmatia used Venetian Italian, Old-Štokavian and Čakavian as spoken languages and Latin, Tuscan Italian, Neo-Štokavian, and Church Slavonic as written languages. The scripts in use were Glagolitic, Cyrillic and Latin. The use of language varied between and within administrative structures, the Church, schooling institutions, the thematic nature of works produced, and social status of the users. This overview looks at the language situation in Venetian Dalmatia and Dubrovnik in the 18 th century, as well as the political, historical, and cultural determinants of language usage.
