Multiresolution allows for image analysis in terms of different scales. Scalespace filtering, quadtrees, pyramid representations, and the wavelet transform have all been used to yield multi-resolution views of an image. One

The instrument's capabilities focus on imaging (including astrometric and high contrast) as well as single object spectroscopy. This contribution looks at how requirements from the observing modes have driven the instrument design and functionality. Using examples from specific science cases, and making use of the data simulation tool, an outline is presented of what we can expect the instrument to achieve.

In order to support various consortium activities we have developed a first version of SimCADO: an instrument simulator for MICADO. SimCADO uses the results of the detailed simulation efforts conducted for each of the separate consortium-internal work packages in order to generate a model of the optical path from source to detector readout. SimCADO is thus a tool to provide scientific context to both the science and instrument development teams who are ultimately responsible for the final design and future capabilities of the MICADO instrument. Here we present an overview of the inner workings of SimCADO and outline our plan for its further development.

This is the first time such structures have been identified in Fornax dwarfs. FCC 288 has only a small bulge and a bright flaring and slightly warped disk that can be traced out to ±23 from the center (2.05 kpc for H 0 = 75 km s −1 Mpc −1). FCC 204's disk can be traced out to ±20 (1.78 kpc). This galaxy possesses a large bulge. These results can be compared to the findings of Jerjen et al. (2000) and Barazza et al. (2002) who discovered nucleated dEs with spiral and bar features in the Virgo Cluster.

The instrument's observing modes focus on various flavours of imaging, including astrometric, high contrast, and time resolved. There is also a single object spectroscopic mode optimised for wavelength coverage at moderately high resolution. This contribution provides an overview of the key functionality of the instrument, outlining the scientific rationale for its observing modes. The interface between MICADO and the adaptive optics system MAORY that feeds it is summarised. The design of the instrument is discussed, focussing on the optics and mechanisms inside the cryostat, together with a brief overview of the other key subsystems .

The latter are particularly relevant for the dating of these galaxies because even minor rejuvenation events can significantly alter the derived average age of the stellar populations. In order

The observational data extend out to typically 1.5 2 effective radii and indicate a kinematic dichotomy in the family of ellipticals.
