SUMMARY The procedures implemented in the production of functional foods of animal origin should ... more SUMMARY The procedures implemented in the production of functional foods of animal origin should be based on the scientifically verified new knowledge comprising the entire food chain. Possible physiological and psychological effects of such foods on humans should not be neglected. Although the human genome did not change since the Palaeolithic, however the nutritional habits and way of life of modern people have changed significantly and subsequently led to the development of various chronic degenerative diseases. Fatty acids, in particular n-3 unsaturated acids, are important, biologically active molecules characterised by a series of positive effects in the prevention and improvement of both human and animal health. Some of the modes of increasing the intake of n-3 unsaturated fatty acids include the increase of content of these fatty acids in feed fed to farm animals or in rearing of animals of more advantageous genotype. Irrespective of the method used for increasing the intake...

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex anxiety disorder caused by a traumatic experience. It is over represented in combat veterans from Croatian homeland war. The glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) belong to a group of major detoxifying enzymes responsible for eliminating of oxidative stress products. It is hypothesized that GSTs genetic isoforms together with oxidative stress biomarkers might contribute in pathogenesis of PTSD. Methods. 134 male combat veterans from Croatian homeland war were included in the study, 121 with PTSD diagnosed according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), and 13 control subjects. Concentrations of serum lipid parameters were determined with standard enzymatic methods. Gluthatione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalytic concentrations were determined in hemolysates of erythrocytes by standard spectrophotometric methods. Anthropometric data were collected. GSTM1 and GSTT1 were determi...

In this work the influence of fat free diet on the fatty acid composition and the arrangement on the glycerol backbone of rat liver phospholipids was studied. Animals were fed for two weeks with a fat free diet (FFD) isoenergetic with control diet (CD). Total lipids were extracted from liver homogenate and fatty acid composition was analyzed by using gas chromatography. Phospholipid classes were separated by column and high performance thin layer chromatography and, after treatment with phospholipase A2, composition of fatty acids linked to sn-1 and sn-2 position of glycerolipids was analyzed. In total lipids, a significant decrease in the 18:2, 20:4 and 20:5 species was counterbalanced by an enhancement in the 16:0, 16:1, 18:1 and 20:2 species. In contrast to total lipids, changes in the fatty acid composition and positional distribut...

Following the current short-term achievements in organ transplantation, health care professionals... more Following the current short-term achievements in organ transplantation, health care professionals are increasingly recognizing long-term outcomes as important measures of the success of solid organ transplantation. Transplant recipients incur significant morbidity related to acute and chronic nephrotoxic side effects, as well as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, malignancy, and metabolic bone disease. If recognized, initial malnutrition and consecutive hyperlipidemia can efficiently be prevented Post- operative medical evidence follow-up, accompanied by an appropriate nutritive support, is necessary to prevent the development of hyperlipidemia and to improve the long term surviving and well-being of transplant patients.

The objective of this study was to determine the FA composition in serum of brown bears from Croatia and Poland. The study was conducted on 20 animals, 10 from Croatia (4 females, F ; 6 males, M), and 10 from Poland (3 F, 7 M). Seven serum samples were collected during 2015 and 2016 from brown bears in Croatia, and seven samples during 2014, 2015, and 2016 from brown bears in Poland during capturing and radio-collaring. Six samples were collected from bears in captivity (three samples from both countries). Total lipids were extracted and the composition of FA methyl esters was determined by gas chromatography. Results showed that lipids isolated from serum of brown bears in Croatia were dominated by polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (41.7±9.8% ; the most common linoleic acid, C18:2 ; 24.7±8.4%). Serum of brown bears in Poland was dominated by ...

However, the long-term success of organ transplantation depends significantly on patients' ability to overcome possible postoperative complications and to recover from a severe metabolic misbalance. The aim of our study was to compare early post-operative protein intake through parenteral nutrition with main biochemical parameters of protein catabolism. METHODS: 60 patients were included in the study, 50 with liver transplantation, 8 with kidney transplantation, and two patients with both, liver and kidney transplantation. Throughout the stay in an intensive care unit, patients' total nutritional intake was monitored. Blood samples were collected from day 0 (before liver transplantation), on day 1 and day 3 after transplantation. In serum concentrations of urea and creatinine, as well as catalytic concentrations of AST, ALT, AP and GGT were measured with IFC...

FABP2 genetic polymorphism might affect serum lipid concentrations and therefore it would be interesting to investigate its association with fatty acid composition. The cross-sectional study included 21 men and 67 women older than 70 years. International Diabetes Federation criteria was used for determination of MetS. Serum lipids were determined with standard enzymatic methods. FABP2 genetic polymorphism Ala54Thr was performed using PCR-RFLP method. The fatty acids (FA) analysis was done after extraction of total lipids from serum with mixture of isopropanol/chlorophorm(1.5:1 v/v) and the composition of FA was performed by gas chromatography on SRI 8610C Gas chromatograph. Median concentrations of C14 (myristic acid) was significantly higher in subjects with MetS than in those without MetS (635 vs. 468 mg/mL, p = 0.026), while median concentrations of C20:4(n-6) (all-cis-5, 8, 11, 14-eicosatet...
