Previous studies have found similarities among research with families globally that identify the characteristics of strong families. This article aims to characterize the strengths and challenges of families in three Arab countries (Qatar, Jordan, and Tunisia). The research will also help to identify implications for policy in the Arab region. Data were collected using focus group discussions and in-depth interviews. The use of a thematic approach helped in the analysis of the data across the three countries. The themes that emerged as strengths included respect, love, responsibility, support, good communication, conveying traditions, and resilience. Family challenges included financial concerns, negative outside influences, change in traditions and values, absent/disengaged fathers, and poor communication and conflict. Implications for policy and future research are discussed.

Because family science classes are centered on information and concepts relevant for both men and women, it is important to understand gendered experiences to promote healthy family and romantic relationships. Not only would men benefit from these classes, but increasing male enrollment in family sciences courses will help promote gender diversity in higher education. The current study used qualitative analyses to examine the perceptions of male undergraduate students concerning the benefits of taking family science courses. Male undergraduates from three midsize universities in the Midwestern and Western United States provided open-ended responses via an online survey (N = 64). Three themes emerged: the classes provided students with valuable information; they had a better understanding of themselves and others; and the classes related to their future career path. Results provide support to prom...

This research used principles of good practice in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in evaluation of an undergraduate Family Life Education (FLE) methods course that provided students applied experiences completing low-, medium-, and high-dosage FLE projects. Undergraduate students (n = 29) reported perceived educational outcomes from completing the FLE methods course. Researchers derived results from a qualitative priority analysis and included quantitative results for triangulation purposes. Students reported significant increases in their knowledge regarding FLE through course participation. They also reported learning processes related to collaboration in FLE, skills for planning and implementing FLE, and knowledge regarding low-, medium-, and high-dosage FLE. Discussion focuses on results in terms of consistency with learning objectives and instructional theory.

The main dimensions of the Romanian cultural model are represented by Latinity and Christianity and have involved very consistent principles. This article is focused on the specific aspects of the Romanian family and its present transformation under major structural changes in the socio-cultural context. In Romanian contemporary society there are two main types of effects that were generated by communism in the middle of the 20th century and by the rediscovery of democracy in 1989. The Romanian family has supported the consequences of these events, first by the abusive insertion of state control into the domestic sphere and second by the necessity of redeveloping self-reliant capacities for family survival. Under the pressure of continuous change in the social context, the contemporary family has valuable resources inherent in traditional Romanian culture and in the family's internal strengths.

The extent and consequence of family violence as a major problem has received increased attention around the world. The focus of the present study is not only to inform about intimate partner violence (IPV) that occurs in individual countries, but to illustrate how individuals, families, communities, and cultures use their strengths to overcome the challenges that violence presents. An analysis of 16 countries, including 17 cultures is represented and includes all seven of the world's major geocultural areas. Qualitative methodology was used to examine the stories of intimate partner violence in which similarities and differences across cultures were discovered resulting in a theoretical discussion of findings. The International Family Strengths Model was applied to examine the family strengths, community strengths, and cultural strengths used to mitigate family violence worldwide. Individual strengths emerged as a new and important component of the model. Suggestions for change include recognition of differing solutions across cultures, the need for mediation and policy changes, and the importance of empowerment.

Sometimes families create their own problems, and at other times, families are forced to deal with problems that the world has thrust upon them. For this reason, it is imperative that all societies seek to understand families in all their considerable diversity; to protect families; and to help strengthen families through intervention on the level of the family, the immediate community, the nation, and the international community. Research teams were assembled and conducted focus group studies of family members in Qatar, Jordan, and Tunisia. The purpose of this preliminary report is to discuss the qualitative research findings from focus groups with Arab family members in all three countries, revealing their perceptions of Arab family strengths and challenges, and how they see that families under stress can be better supported by society
