The musical affinities between the two have evolved into a steadfast friendship, reflected in a newly published correspondence that is becoming significant for slices of recent music history. I do not intend a comparison or an analytical parallel between the compositions of the two: the focus will fall on Niculescu's musical springs, with some signs of his and Ligeti's compatibility. Niculescu's heterophony versus Ligeti's micropolyphony, the impulses both received from mathematics, linguistics, the natural sciences, as well as the search (since the 1980s) for a new diatonicism that would configure an alternative system to serialism, all can be examined accordingly. It is also not uninteresting that both composers are convinced that they belong neither to the avant-garde nor to pos...

The country, geographically situated in a Slavic environment, enjoys that status of a "Latinate Island" that has long relied for support and protection upon its ancient and ageless French relative. In the first half of the twentieth century, the residents of Bucharest were proud to live in what was known as "Little Paris." Many Romanian musicians studied at the Conservatoire national de Musique, the Schola Cantorum, and the École Normale, 1 then returning to Romanian musical life impressed and much influenced by the Parisian cultural milieu. If such artistic connections are relatively easy to establish in the case of composers and performers, who can communicate without the need of languages and translations, they are less easy to establish in the case of musicologists. In the following pages, using the Revue de musicologie as a case study, I wish briefly to trace the impact of French musicology in Romania, and briefly to mention some contributions that Romanian musicologists have made to French publications.

It is interesting to examine, in this context, the musicians’ quest for a ‘national’ sound and identity. Analysis of piano miniatures or vaudeville, the favourite genre of the Romanian audience in the first half of the century, shows eclectic combinations of urban folk music with sources of inspiration borrowed from popular foreign melodies. The second half of the century seems to be marked in modern scholarship by premieres: some composers are included in Romanian history just for the merit of writing the first Romanian symphony, the first string quartet, the first opera, and so forth. Their work led towards the constitution of a ‘national language’ adapted to genres borrowed from contemporary Western European music. In addition to demonstrating these ideas in the work of a number of Romanian composers (Josef Herfner, Ioan Andrei Wachmann, An...
